The research activities on soil–freshwaterinteractions and freshwater biotic structure andprocesses in the Høylandet area during the years 1986–89are presented in this issue ofHydrobiologia. The 9 papers cover a range of topicsfrom physiochemical gradients and processes in soilsand freshwaters to selected aspects of freshwaterbiotic community structure and temporal variability.This synopsis aims (a) to present an overview of majorfindings, (b) to interpret the results in the contextof air pollution effects and (c) to outlinesuggestions for future research activities inHøylandet. The area has a sub-oceanic climate varyingfrom 1100 to 2200 mm of precipitation normallyoriginating from unpolluted airmasses from the NorthAtlantic. It is chemically dominated by sea salts, haslow concentrations and low deposition of mineralacids. The catchment geology is variable and complexand consists mainly of various granites and gneisses.The soils are undisturbed ancient soils,primarily iron podzols associated with forests, orintact histosols with strong organic characterassociated with mires, often quite acidic.They are sensitive because occurrence of predominantlyinsoluble unstable Al-complexes may leach out ifexposed to anthropogenically acidified soil drainagewater and turn up as toxic inorganic aqueous Al insurface runoff. Small amounts of locally generatednitrogen compounds are mostly retained in thecatchment. The water qualities of these Høylandetsites are run by inputs of sea salts, hydrologicalprocesses including dilution of the base flow, orlateral surface or overland flow and in-catchmentprocesses. Relative to affected areas, it appears thatthe inputs and catchment processes are in balance,i.e., that the inputs of strong acid anions, hydrogenions and sea salts are equilibrated by internalweathering and other processes and integrated withinapparently intact biogeochemical cycles. The overallresult is that these soils remain a net source ofalkalinity to the runoff. These results are confirmedby regional studies of water quality both at low andhigh flow which show that the humus and ionic contentof the water decreased with elevation, headwatersbeing more dominated by sea salts and dilutionprocesses. Excess sulphate concentrations are low, andfew if any sites appear anthropogenically acidified,the most acid pHs reflecting presence of natural weakorganic acids.The resulting surface water quality allows a diverseaquatic fauna and flora with representatives of manyacid-sensitive groups. The fish fauna consists ofself-reproducing salmonid populations with normaldemography and ecological interactions. Despite highin-lake mortality, both brown trout and Arctic charrexhibited normal age-class compositions, with noindication of the recruitment failure or highpost-spawning mortality commonly observed inacid-stressed situations. The zooplankton and benthos in the lakesare inhabited by populations of several acid sensitivespecies, like Daphnia spp and Gammaruslacustris, and with dominance of mayfly species ofthe genus Baetis in the stream fauna. Thediatom flora includes many species which are rare orabsent in acidified waters. The observed gradients indiversity and biomass seem dominated by localenvironmental conditions which reflect natural ratherthan man-made processes. The pristine nature of thearea also emerges from the paleoecological studies inLake Røyrtjønna which show that the low acidity ofthis lake evironment has persisted from preindustrialtill present times. Suggestion for future researchactivities in Høylandet are outlined.  相似文献

The species composition of aquatic insects in theboreal stream, Skiftesåa, was investigated usingemergence traps, Malaise traps and kick samples. Atleast 13 Ephemeroptera, 16 Plecoptera, 25 Trichopteraand 120 Chironomidae species were recorded. This faunais representative for non-polluted, northern streams.The production of macrobenthos was estimated to beonly about 1 g dry weight per year and m2,possibly due to the fluctuating flow of water.  相似文献

Soils were sampled from two agricultural fields, two relatively pristine forests, and one suburban forest in Ontario, Canada. The ability of these soils to mineralize 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate, 3-chlorobenzoate, 4-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, pentachlorophenol, and atrazine was determined using 14C-labeled substrates. Direct preexposure was necessary before atrazine mineralization could be detected; however, it was not necessary for degradation of any of the other chemicals. 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate and pentachlorophenol mineralization was much higher in the agricultural soils relative to the pristine forest soils, but 3-chlorobenzoate and 2,4-dichlorophenol mineralization rates showed the opposite trend. Mineralization of 4-chlorophenol was about equivalent in all soils. Suburban forests soils were indistinguishable from agricultural soils with respect to their degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate and chlorobenzoate. Additionally, they were better able than any of the soils to withstand the toxic effects of pentachlorophenol. Pentachlorophenol mineralization was highly variable in the pristine forest soils, ranging from about 6 to 50%. Abiotic factors such as pH, soil type, and organic and moisture content did not account for these significant site differences. The selective forces responsible for these differences, and the possible differences in microbial populations are discussed.  相似文献

During the Surface Water Acidification Programme, ahydrochemical plot study was carried out at thepristine Høylandet study site during 1986–89. Theplot soils were acidic iron podzols (sensuKubiena), with a significant content of secondaryaluminium (Al), forming a potential major source oftoxic Al in streams and lakes. Rain and mist inputscontain small amounts of anthropogenic sulphate, withammonium inputs being enhanced during the summermonths. Vegetation canopy interactions, includingsorption and leaching, change input water chemistrybefore it reaches the soil, in which organicinteractions increase, especially during the summer.Amphibole in the soil parent material is probablyresponsible for the large mineral weathering ratedetermined and this source of base cations, alliedwith the small anthropogenic inputs, results in Alconcentrations in the streamwater being small incomparison with impacted sites.  相似文献

近年来在非极端环境中已经发现有古菌(Archaea)的存在, 但在中国原始土壤中还未见报道。本研究的目的是调查古菌是否存在于两个分别取自中国新疆和广西的土壤及两个美国亚利桑那州南部地区的土壤中。我们分别构建了这四个原始土壤的古菌16S rDNA文库并对28个克隆的16S rDNA进行了鉴定。所有这些16S rDNA的序列都归类于古菌的泉古菌门(Crenarchaeota)。进化树分析表明, 这些泉古菌的16S rDNA属于非高温陆地环境中的泉古菌种群, 明显区别于海洋和淡水地带的泉古菌种群。这个泉古菌种群又有两个分支, 这两个分支在16S rDNA序列上和G C含量上有明显的区别。本研究在两个中国和两个美国原始土壤中鉴定了非高温泉古菌的存在, 由此证明泉古菌的存在范围不只局限于高温等极端环境。另外, 美国原始土壤中的泉古菌只属于一个进化分支, 这说明非高温泉古菌种群的类型和土壤的地理位置及土壤特性有关。  相似文献

An investigation was conducted to assess the microbial diversity and biogeochemistry of a pristine shallow glaciofluvial groundwater system on the Canadian Shield. Vadose zone sands were very fine-grained, consisting mostly of iron oxide-coated quartz. Below the water table in the saturated zone, iron oxide-coating on quartz grains were absent, owing presumably to reductive dissolution by Fe(III)-reducing bacteria and chemical weathering, respectively. Groundwater pH was circumneutral at 6.4 + 0.1, and Eh was slightly reducing at 349 ± 15 mV compared to local surface waters at 417 ± 21 mV; the total dissolved solids concentration in groundwater was 45.2 ± 6.9 mg/L. A total of 269 clones were sequenced and compiled into a 16S rRNA gene library, and representative operational taxonomic units (OTU) were retrieved from basic local alignment search tool (BLAST) analyses at the species-level across 7 phyla, including Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Chlorobi, Firmicutes, Planctomycetes, and Proteobacteria. Aerobic, anaerobic, and facultative anaerobic heterotrophs were predominant among the OTU. Lithoautotrophic ammonium- and nitrite-oxidizers were especially prominent, as were diazotrophs, nitrate- and nitrite-reducers. Representative OTU also included Fe(II)-oxidizers and Fe(III)-reducers, whereas those associated with sulfur cycling were rare. These observations suggest that there is considerable potential for biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen and iron within shallow glaciofluvial groundwater systems on the Canadian Shield.  相似文献

Knowledge on microbial community composition and ecology in highly mineralized (TDS up to 71?g l?1), cold waters (T?<?12?°C) from the zones of restricted water exchange is scarce. Therefore, the aim of our study was to reveal how the particular physicochemical water conditions of these zones affect the community composition. The community members, which could be involved in the sulfur cycling were of particular interest since they may strongly influence wells operation. The pristine, mineral waters of North Poland were extracted from boreholes reaching Cenozoic, Jurassic, and Triassic aquifers at the depth of 46–1248?m below ground surface. Both culture-dependent (culturing on R2A medium) and culture-independent techniques (microscopic methods and high-throughput 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing) were applied. The bacterial communities were characterized by low complexity and strongly varied across the sampling locations. Bacteria potentially involved in the sulfur cycle (sulfate reduction) were common in all mineral waters and were dominant (especially Desulfovibrio) in the deepest waters. The most important geochemical drivers of the observed microbial community composition were TDS including Cl?, Na+, Mg2+, and NO3?. Bacterial isolates belonged mostly to the genus Bacillus. Sequences assigned to Archaea (Methanobacterium) were detected only in the deepest borehole water.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) is a tetrameric enzyme which is composed of two subunits known as LDHA and LDHB, which are encoded by the LDHA and LDHB genes respectively. LDH catalyses the last step in anaerobic glycolysis through the reversible conversion of pyruvate to lactate via coupled oxidation of NADH cofactor. The LDHA plays an important regulatory role in anaerobic glycolysis, by catalysing the final step of the process. Therefore, it is likely that increases in the expression level of LDHA in cancer cells could facilitate the efficiency of anaerobic glycolysis. Measuring the level of serum LDHA is a key step in the diagnosis of many cancer types. In this study, the adsorption, stability, and dynamics of LDHA on the surface of pristine graphene (PG) and carboxylated graphene (COOH-Graphene) were investigated using its molecular dynamics simulation. Variations in root mean square deviation, root mean square fluctuation, solvent accessible surface area and adsorption energy of the LDHA during the simulation were calculated to analyse the effect of PG and COOH-Graphene on the overall conformation of LDHA. Results showed that the adsorption of LDHA on COOH-Graphene is mostly mediated by electrostatic interactions, whereas on the PG, both Van der Waals and π-π interactions are prominent.  相似文献

We studied the restoration success of a cut‐away peatland 10 years after restoration by comparing the vegetation and CO2 dynamics with those of a pristine peatland of similar nutrition level and climate. Vegetation and CO2 dynamics were monitored during one growing season. We used DCA (detrended correspondence analysis) and diversity indices to study the vegetation composition within and between the sites, and non‐linear regression models to estimate the seasonal CO2 fluxes and balances of the sites. Based on both DCA and diversity indices, the study plots in the restored site differed more in the vegetation composition than the study plots in the pristine site. The variation in the CO2 fluxes and balance was greater in the restored than in the pristine site, resulting from the heterogeneous vegetation in the restored site. The seasonal net CO2 balance was positive (sink) at both sites, the restored site binding on average 500 ± 410 g CO2/m2 and the pristine site 390 ± 265 g CO2/m2 (statistically not different, p = 0.575). The results indicate that the restoration of the vegetation composition is still incomplete but the vegetation coverage is sufficient for the restored site to function as a sink of atmospheric CO2.  相似文献
