The Coiba National Park is located off the Pacific coast of Panama andincludes several small islands and a larger one which gives its name to the park. Anumber of rivers in Coiba Island have well developed mangrove systems attheir mouths and two of these were selected for the present study: SantaCruz and El Gambute. The first one comprises an assemblage of Rhizopora mangle, Laguncularia racemosa and Pellicierarhizoporae, and shows no evidence of recent human activity. The secondone is a smaller forest, solely composed of short Rhizoporamangle trees, and is recovering from the impact of human activities.During 1997, the tidal flats associated with each system were studied. Toasses the polychaete distribution within each tidal flat, three transects werearranged from the low to the upper intertidal level. Every transect hadthree sampling sites: the first one was adjacent to the low water level, thesecond one at an intermediate point, and the third one close to the highwater level and the mangrove line. At each site, three randomly chosensamples of sediment were taken for faunal study and a further one wascollected for sedimentology study.The polychaetes were identifiedto species or genus level. For each flat, a matrix summarizing the actualnumber of individuals of each species in every sample was created, andpopulation density, species richness and diversity were computed for eachsite. After matrix data had been transformed, a similarity analysis of thesamples was carried out.  相似文献

The nuchal organs of annelid Laonice bahusiensis (Spionidae) from northern Europe have been studied using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. L. bahusiensis is the first spionid species in which extensively developed, continuous nuchal organs are described. The nuchal organs of this genus are the longest known among polychaete annelids. They consist of paired double bands extending from the prostomium on a mid‐dorsal caruncle for about 24–30 setigers. Their microanatomy corresponds to the general structural plan of nuchal organs: there are ciliated supporting cells and bipolar sensory cells with sensory cilia traversing an olfactory chamber. The organs are overlaid by a secondary paving‐stone‐like cover and innervated by one pair of longitudinally elongated nuchal nerves. These findings clearly favor the hypothesis that the paired, extensively developed ciliated structures found in some Spionidae are homologous with the prostomial nuchal organs characteristic of polychaete annelids. Concentrations of sediment organic nitrogen, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (ammonium, nitrite and nitrate), and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in sediments were measured at two sites in a eutrophic estuarine lagoon. One is a shallow aerobic site where macrobenthos are abundant and the other is a deep anaerobic site devoid of macrobenthos. Four species of macrobenthos (Bivalvia: Corbicula japonica, Annelida: Notomastus sp., Neanthes japonica and Oligochaeta sp.) were found in 8 sandy sediment cores collected at a shallow site in three succcessive summers. DON (170–1500 μg atom N l-1) was the major constituent of dissolved nitrogen with 10 times greater concentration than ammonium (55–180 μg atom N l-1) and 1000 times greater than nitrate (0.14–5.9 μg atom N l-1) and nitrite (0.21–1.4 μg atom N l-1). The ammonium content in anaerobic muddy sediments at the deep site (210–350 μg atom N l-1) was higher than in aerobic sandy sediments, whereas DON was higher in aerobic sediments than anaerobic sediments (90–240 μg atom N l-1). In aerobic sediments, depth profiles of DIN were nearly constant whereas DON was mostly highest at the surface. On the other hand, the increase of DON and ammonium was observed where macrobenthos was found. The occurrence of macrobenthos and high content of DON and ammonium content in the layers of sediment may suggest the influence of macrobenthos in the partitioning of nitrogen species through their motion and excretion. Field manipulations were used to determine the importance of two predatory polychaetes, Nereis virens Sars and Glycera dibranchiata Ehlers, and epibenthic predators in structuring an intertidal soft-bottom community in Maine. Epibenthic predators were excluded from portions of the soft bottom using cages which also enclosed elevated densities of the predatory polychaetes. The experiments ran 10 wk and 20 wk beginning in June 1979. Exclusion of epibenthic predators had no effect on infaunal densities after 10 wk but produced ≈ 1.5-fold increase in total density after 20 wk. Since gulls (Larus spp.) avoided all cages, including those not designed to exclude epibenthic predators, the effect of gull predation on infaunal abundances was not tested using exclusion cages. Crabs, Carcinus maenas (Linnaeus) and Cancer irroratus Say were observed in cages not designed to exclude predators.Densities of Nephtys incisa Malmgren, Polydora ligni Webster, Streblospio benedicti Webster, Scoloplos robustus Verrill, phyllodocids, and bivalves were highest in cages containing elevated Glycera dibranchiata density and lowest in cages containing elevated Nereis virens density. N. virens was the only taxon whose abundance was reduced in the presence of Glycera dibranchiata which may account for high infaunal densities in the G. dibranchiata treatment. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that G. dibranchiata are capable of preying on Nereis virens. Additional field experiments revealed that the presence of N. Virens reduced the abundance of some taxa within the first 10 days of colonization. N. virens may have reduced infaunal densities by predation and/or disturbance at the sediment surface. These results suggest that complex interactions within the infauna are important in structuring marine soft-bottom communities.  相似文献

This study records the polychaetes found on the submerged roots of Rhizophora mangl on San Andres and Providence Islands, ColombianCaribbean. Sampling was done in 1998 during the rainy (July) and dry(November) seasons; each season, 17 roots were collected in threedifferent stations with different kinds of human impact, two in San Andresand one in Providence. At the same time temperature, salinity anddissolved oxygen were measured in situ. Aromatic hydrocarbons weremeasured in the laboratory. The polychaetes were removed from the rootsand identified. The available root area for the organisms was alsomeasured.Five genera and 11 species were newly recorded for the ColombianCaribbean. The most abundant families were Terebellidae in Old ProvidenceMc Bean Lagoon, Syllidae in Honda Bay and Nereididae in Hooker Bayon the San Andres Island. Thelepus `setosus' (Terebellidae) and Amblyosyllis sp. (Syllidae) were highly abundant in less polluted samplingstations such as Old Providence Mc Bean Lagoon and Honda Bay. On theother hand, Neanthes `succinea' (Nereididae) were abundant inHooker Bay which was the most polluted station. Salinity seemed to be the mostimportant parameter for the polychaete populations. The populations ofpolychaetes, as a total group, seemed to be related to the root areaavailable on both islands, independent of the season. However, during therainy season, the populations were independent of root area availability,while during the dry season, the populations were dependent on it.  相似文献

Six new Ophryotrocha species are described from five whale-falls and two wood-falls off the southern Californian coast. Phylogenetic analyses based on the nuclear gene H3 and the mitochondrial genes COI and 16S using MrBayes and maximum likelihood analyses were performed on 40 dorvilleid taxa and one outgroup. Ophryotrocha batillus sp. nov. is morphologically identical to Ophryotrocha scutellus described from a shallow water whale-fall in the North Atlantic, although the two cryptic species differ genetically. Ophryotrocha langstrumpae sp. nov. is closely related in the molecular phylogenetic analyses to these two sibling species. Ophryotrocha flabella sp. nov. is similar to Ophryotrocha globopalpata, and although there are a few morphological differences, the genetic divergence is low between the two species. Ophryotrocha nauarchus sp. nov. is sexually dimorphic, with males having appendages on the first chaetiger. Ophryotrocha magnadentata sp. nov. and Ophryotrocha longicollaris sp. nov. are sister species in our molecular analyses, and together with O. nauarchus sp. nov. and O. flabella sp. nov. they fall within a clade that includes O. globopalpata and Exallopus jumarsi described from hydrothermal vents in the Pacific Ocean and Ophryotrocha longidentata from the shallow North Atlantic. Our results highlight the remarkable unknown diversity of deep-water habitats and the role of chemosynthetic ecosystems in the evolution of deep-sea life.  相似文献

The trace fossil Zoophycos is abundant in transgressive, shallow marine carbonates in the Middle Permian (Wordian) Khuff Formation of the Huqf-Haushi Uplift of Interior Oman. It often occurs as part of a complex (compound) trace fossil that comprises two integrated elements: (i) irregular galleries with straight to gently curved tunnels and interconnected shafts, and (ii) simple planar to complex spreiten structures with a marginal tube ( Zoophycos ). The galleries are characterized by irregularly winding, dichotomous branching, large variation in shape and size and circular to elliptical vertical cross-sections. Zoophycos consists of spreiten with a marginal tube, either originating as a simple lobe from the convex segment of a curved tunnel, or forming more complex, subcircular, spreiten systems parallel to bedding. The spreiten were formed by simple strip mining, where the animal defecated without producing faecal pellets. U-shaped marginal tubes indicate that the burrows were well aerated. The complex trace fossil points to combined dwelling and deposit-feeding behaviour, with irregular galleries in the firm substrate and Zoophycos spreiten in the softground below it. It can be assumed that the animal used the open tunnel system mainly for dwelling (domichnion) and possibly suspension feeding, but occasionally changed to deposit feeding while creating the spreiten (fodinichnion). The integration of the irregular galleries (tunnels and interconnected shafts) with the marginal tubes of Zoophycos suggests the same producer for this compound trace fossil. Many modern polychaetes produce very similar galleries within firm and soft substrates, and polychaetes are therefore interpreted as the most likely producers. Similarities between Permian and Triassic Zoophycos suggest comparable trace making behaviour before and after the end-Permian mass extinction.  相似文献

1. The relationships between life history, fitness and sexuality, together with their ecological and evolutionary significance, has been analysed comparing the main life-history traits and demography in three closely related species belonging to the genus Ophryotrocha. The species are: the gonochoristic O. labronica, the simultaneous hermaphrodite O. diadema and the protandrous hermaphrodite O. puerilis. 2. Survivorship and reproductive data were collected weekly and were used to construct life tables and population projection matrices for each species and compare life-history characteristics. Elasticity, life-table response and decomposition analyses were performed to examine the relative contribution of fecundity and survivorship to differences in lamda between species. 3. The gonochoristic and hermaphroditic species differ in all the main life-history parameters and also in demographic characteristics. In particular the value of lamda, used commonly to express fitness, is markedly higher in the gonochoristic species while in terms of fitness simultaneous and sequential hermaphroditism are very similar. In the genus Ophryotrocha gonochorism currently represents the most widespread condition, being characteristic of the majority of the known species in the genus. 4. Given the demographic advantage ensured by gonochorism, it remains be understood why some species have retained simultaneous hermaphroditism and one has evolved a sequential type hermaphroditism; the most probable hypothesis is correlated with the density of the species in natural habitats.  相似文献

The structure of the polychaete muscular system is reviewed. The muscular system comprises the muscles of the body wall, the musculature of the parapodial complex and the muscle system of the dissepiments and mesenteries. Various types of organisation of the longitudinal and circular components of the muscular body wall are distinguished. In Opheliidae, Polygordiidae, Protodrilidae, Spionidae, Oweniidae, Aphroditidae, Acoetidae (=Polyodontidae), Polynoidae, Sigalonidae, Phyllodocidae, Nephtyidae, Pisionidae, and Nerillidae circular muscles are lacking. It is hypothesised that the absence of circular muscles represents the plesiomorphic state in Annelida. This view contradicts the widely accepted idea of an earthworm-like musculature of the body wall comprising an outer layer of circular and an inner layer of longitudinal fibres. A classification of the various types of parapodial muscle construction has been developed. Massive and less manoeuvrable parapodia composed of many components like those of Aphrodita are regarded to represent the plesiomorphic state in recent polychaetes. An analysis of the diversity of the muscular structure supports the hypothesis that the primary mode of life in polychaetes was epibenthic and the parapodial chaetae had a protective function.  相似文献
