Monitoring of skin blood flow oscillations related with mechanical activity of vessels is a very useful modality during diagnosis of peripheral hemodynamic disorders. In this study, we developed a new model and technique for real-time conversion of skin temperature into skin blood flow oscillations, and vice versa. The technique is based on the analogy between the thermal properties of the human skin and electrical properties of the special low-pass filter. Analytical and approximated impulse response functions for the low- and high-pass filters are presented. The general algorithm for the reversible conversion of temperature into blood flow is described. The proposed technique was verified using simulated or experimental data of cold stress, deep inspiratory gasp, and post-occlusive reactive hyperaemia tests. The implementation of the described technique will enable to turn a temperature sensor into a blood flow sensor.  相似文献

Whether oxygen should be administered acutely during ST‐segment elevation myocardial infarction is debated. Despite this controversy, the possible influence of supplementary oxygen on animal models of ischaemia–reperfusion injury or cardioprotection is rarely considered. We used an in vivo mouse model of ischaemia and reperfusion to investigate the effect of ventilation with room air versus 100% oxygen. The coronary artery of anaesthetized mice was occluded for 40 min. followed by 2‐hrs reperfusion. Infarct size was measured by tetrazolium staining and expressed as a percentage of area at risk, determined using Evan's blue. Unexpectedly, infarct size in mice ventilated with 100% oxygen was significantly smaller than in those ventilated with room air (33 ± 5% versus 46 ± 3%; n = 6; P < 0.01). We tested a standard protocol of 3 × 5 min. cycles of remote ischaemic preconditioning (RIPC) and found this was unable to protect mice ventilated with 100% oxygen. RIPC protocols using 2.5‐ or 10‐min. occlusion were similarly ineffective in mice ventilated with oxygen. Similar disparate results were obtained with direct cardiac ischaemic preconditioning. In contrast, pharmacological protection using bradykinin administered at reperfusion was effective even in mice ventilated with 100% oxygen, reducing infarct size from 33 ± 5% to 21 ± 3% (n = 4–6; P < 0.01). Laser speckle contrast imaging of blood flow and direct pO2 measurements were made in the hindlimb, but these measurements did not correlate with protection. In conclusion, ventilation protocol can have a major influence on infarct size and ischaemic preconditioning protocols in mice.  相似文献

Aerobic endurance capacity is partly dependent on blood supply to and metabolic capacity of the active muscles. Recordings of lower limb skin postocclusive hyperaemia with laser Doppler flowmetry can differentiate between patients with lower limb atherosclerosis and healthy controls. In this study, we investigated the relationship between aerobic endurance, calf volume, common femoral artery diameter and time properties of the postocclusive laser Doppler curve. A group of 16 healthy male subjects with values for aerobic endurance which varied from those of untrained men to elite endurance trained athletes were examined. Duration of laser Doppler recorded skin postocclusive hyperaemia was significantly correlated to both aerobic power and anaerobic threshold (P less than 0.01). Hyperaemia in subjects with large common femoral artery diameter was of shorter duration (P less than 0.05). The peak and mean body mass related blood flow during hyperaemia was correlated to anaerobic threshold (P less than 0.05). These results were in agreement with previous studies indicating an effect of endurance training on the blood supply to the muscles concerned.  相似文献

There are currently no comparison measurements of stress‐induced changes in vascular function during acute mental stress tests to measurements made by BIOPAC MP150 systems technology, a standard polygraph device used to detect deception during polygraph examinations in military or law enforcement applications. Vascular responses to reactive hyperaemia and acute mental stress in 25 healthy subjects were measured by both peripheral arterial tonometry (EndoPAT) and a blood pressure cuff attached to a pressure transducer (BIOPAC) and compared. Reactive hyperaemia was performed at baseline and following three acute mental stress tests. There was no difference in vascular reactivity at baseline and following acute mental stress, as measured by EndoPAT or BIOPAC systems (p > 0·05). Mental stress ratios measured by EndoPAT were significantly different than those measured by BIOPAC (p < 0·01). These data suggest that EndoPAT measurements of vascular responses to acute mental stress may be more specific and sensitive than measurements using the BIOPAC system. The prevalence of denture stomatitis and its predisposing conditions in an older Greek population Background: Pathology related to complete denture‐wearing will remain an important issue because of an increase in the ageing population. Objective: To investigate the prevalence and the risk factors for denture‐related stomatitis in the edentulous maxilla of older patients with a maxillary complete denture. Material and methods: One hundred and six patients treated in the Department of Prosthodontics of the Athens Dental School were interviewed and clinically examined. The results were analysed using chi‐square tests and multiple logistic regression. Results: Denture stomatitis was recorded in 39.6% of the sample (pinpoint hyperaemia: 17%, diffuse erythema: 16%, papillary hyperplasia: 6.6%). Chi‐square tests recorded significant associations between denture stomatitis and the continuous use of dentures (particularly the diffuse erythema type), the increased duration of denture experience and the poor retention of the maxillary denture. Other significant associations were recorded between the increased age of the current denture and pinpoint hyperaemia, and the reduced frequency of denture cleaning and papillary hyperplasia. Multiple logistic analysis revealed that the most important risk factor for denture stomatitis was the continuous use of the denture. Conclusion: The prevalence of denture stomatitis was high in denture users. Although many predisposing conditions were recorded, the most important risk factor was the continuous use of the denture. Therefore, appropriate advice on denture maintenance should be provided.  相似文献
