We investigate the association between female reproductive investment, absolute size, and sexual size dimorphism in spiders to test the predictions of the fecundity-advantage hypothesis. The relationships between absolute size and sexual size dimorphism and aspects of female reproductive output are examined in comparative analyses using phylogenetically independent contrasts. We provide support for the idea that allometry for sexual dimorphism is the result of variation in female size more so than male size. Regression analyses suggest selection for increased fecundity in females. We argue that fecundity selection provides the only general explanation for the evolution of sexual size dimorphism in spiders.  相似文献

The phylogcny and mode of speciation of Mediterranean Phlebotomus of the subgenus Larroussius were inferred by comparative sequence analyses of a fragment of mitochondrial DNA (Cytochrome b) and of a nuclear gene (Elongation factor alpha). The molecular phytogenies were congruent basally, where their clades matched the species complexes defined by a few genitalic characters of each sex. Reticulate evolution was suggested for the most derived species complex [Phlebotomus perniciosus): the molecular phytogenies were incongruent, and mitochondrial-marker distribution was consistent with introgressive hybridizations not between sister species but between species whose ranges now overlap or abut. By considering the molecular phytogenies, the mitochondrial molecular clock and the ecological niches of the species, as well as the historical biogeography and palaeoecology of the Mediterranean subregion, we propose that the derived lineages arose from a sequential series of speciation events associated with habitat shifts promoted by progressive aridification. This 'taxon pulse'-like speciation occurred in the Pliocene, later than previously proposed in a vicariance hypothesis that invoked only tectonic events, but too early for Pleistocene Ice-age refugia to have played any role other than the isolation of geographical races. Speciation occurred before the proposed divergence of members of the Leishmania donovani complex and this helped to rule out any vector-parasite co-speciation or co-cladogenesis.  相似文献

Two temnospondyl amphibian specimens from the Middle Pennsylvanian locality of Linton, Ohio, USA are described as Adatnanterpeton ohioensis gen. et sp. nov. , a member of the family Cochleosauridae and sister-taxon to the clade comprising the genera Cochleosaurus+Chenoprosopus. A. ohioensis is a very rare component in the large Linton vertebrate assemblage and may have been a relatively terrestrial form, perhaps similar to Cochleosaurus florensis from the contemporaneous lycopsid-trunk locality at Florence, Nova Scotia. An overview of the edopoid and eryopoid adaptive radiations is presented and it is argued that they were sequential radiations, each of monophyletic origin filling the same range of niches.  相似文献

Pyramimonas mucifera sp. nov., a punctate species of the genus, is unusual both behaviorally and at the fine structural level. It forms two distinct populations in culture, one benthic and one planktonic. Planktonic forms are more conventional for the genus, but benthic forms are found in loosely packed mucilage, have flagellar rather than ciliary beating of the flagella, and display a higher degree of metaboly. Ultrastructurally this species is unusual in that it has a unique scale complement and the cells contain numerous muciferous vesicles, leaving only small pockets of cytoplasm containing the usual organelles. This species has a 3–1 type flagellar apparatus but has an additional fibrillar band, a 4–3-2–3 microtubular root system and a flexible synistosome. The discovery of a mucilage-producing species of Pyramimonas draws attention to possible links with other prasinophytes (Halosphaera) and green algae of questionable affiliation (Oltmannsiellopsis and Hafniomonas). It also provides a model of the primitive pyramimonad.  相似文献

The cranial anatomy of the Early Permian sphenacodontid synapsid Secodontosaurus is redescribed. There is no evidence for recognition of more than one species of Secodontosaurus, and S. willistoni is declared a junior subjective synonym of S. obtusidens. Numerous derived characters (autapomorphies), mainly related to the unusually slender and slightly elongated skull, distinguish Secodontosaurus. The cranial specializations are interpreted as an adaptation toward a feeding strategy which involved preying upon small tetrapods that attempted to avoid capture by hiding in crevices and burrows. A cladistic analysis supports the following hypotheses of relationships: (a) the Sphenacodontidae is the nearest sister taxon of Therapsida; (b) Secodontosaurus, Sphenacodon, Ctenospondylus and Dimetrodon share a more recent common ancestor with one another than any of them do with Haptodus, and (c) Secodontosaurus shares a more recent common ancestor with Dimetrodon than with either Sphenacodon or Ctenospondylus. The latter hypothesis suggests that the sphenacodont subfamily 'Sphenacodontinae' is paraphyletic and, therefore, invalid.  相似文献

Pterosperma cristatum Schiller, a member of the Pra-sinophyceae, was examined with light and electron microscopy with special attention on the absolute configuration of flagellar apparatus components and associated structures. This alga is characterized by asymmetrically arranged basal bodies, connecting fibers and microtubular roots. The microtubular root system is homologous with the cruciate root system, the so-called X-2-X-2 root system typical of non-charophycean green algae. Two ducts are associated with microtubular roots. A similar flagellar apparatus and duct system was found in two other prasinophyte genera, Pyramimonas and Halosphaera. The close phylogenetic affinity of these three genera is discussed.  相似文献

Mapping morphological characters on a molecular-based phytogeny enabled examination of character evolution and an historical perspective into evolutionary processes, both of which are important aspects of systematic research and comparative biology. In this study, 63 morphological characters from hepialid moths in New Zealand were mapped on a phylogenetic tree reconstructed from mitochondrial DNA COI & II sequence data. Morphological characters hypothesized to be synapomorphies for the New Zealand 'Oxycanus' lineages and 'Oxycanus' lineage s.s. were confirmed to be homologous when mapped on the COI & II phytogeny. The direction of character state transformation was determined for five characters, with members of the Aenetus and Aoraia lineages exhibiting hypothesized ancestral states. Male genitalic characters were less homoplasious than other character partitions and covaried significandy with phytogeny.  相似文献

A molecular analysis, based on DNA/DNA hybridization experiments, examined seven species of the sciurid tribe Marmotini, in order to evaluate their evolutionary relationships. The branching pattern obtained from a neighbor-joining analysis and least-squares methods indicates that spermophiles and marmots are closely related. This result is in agreement with previous studies based on biochemical data which have suggested a Miospermophilus origin of Marmota (like Spermophilus), instead of the Protospermophilus origin usually proposed by paleontology. Using a molecular time scale calibrated by the fossil record of Sciurus (used here as an outgroup), we estimate the marmot/ground squirrel divergence at 6 My, at the same time as the major lineages of ground squirrels diverged from each other. Consequently, the species of Marmota appear as one of the numerous specialized forms derived from the explosive radiation of the Spermophilus lineage in the late Miocene.  相似文献

Based mainly on morphological characters, the phylogenetic relationships among genera and some species groups of the neotropical family Callichthyidae were examined. A study of the osteology of a generalized callichthyid, Callichthys callichthys (Linnaeus), with detailed comparisons among representatives of the remaining genera in the family, is presented and used as a basis for the phylogenetic analysis. A single most parsimonious tree supported the monophyly of the family Callichthyidae based on 28 derived features and the division of the family in the subfamilies Corydoradinae and Callichthyinae. In the subfamily Corydoradinae, the genus Aspidoras is the sister-group of the clade formed by Corydoras plus Brochis. Five derived features support the monophyly of this clade and four support the monophyly of Brochis. No characters, however, were found to support the genus Corydoras. In the subfamily Callichthyinae, Dianema and Hopbstemum are sister-taxa. Megalechis represents the sister-group of Dianema plus Hoplosternum and Lepthoplosternum represents the sister-group to Megalechis plus Dianema plus Hopbstemum. Finally, Callichthys is considered the least derived member of the subfamily, and is hypothesized as the sister-group of the remaining species. A key to all callichthyid genera is provided.  相似文献
