Vorticella includes more than 100 currently recognized species and represents one of the most taxonomically challenging genera of ciliates. Molecular phylogenetic analysis of Vorticella has been performed so far with only sequences coding for small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA); only a few of its species have been investigated using other genetic markers owing to a lack of similar sequences for comparison. Consequently, phylogenetic relationships within the genus remain unclear, and molecular discrimination between morphospecies is often difficult because most regions of the SSU rRNA gene are too highly conserved to be helpful. In this paper, we move molecular systematics for this group of ciliates to the infrageneric level by sequencing additional molecular markers—fast-evolving internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions—in a broad sample of 66 individual samples of 28 morphospecies of Vorticella collected from Asia, North America and Europe. Our phylogenies all featured two strongly supported, highly divergent, paraphyletic clades (I, II) comprising the morphologically defined genus Vorticella. Three major lineages made up clade I, with a relatively well-resolved branching order in each one. The marked divergence of clade II from clade I confirms that the former should be recognized as a separate taxonomic unit as indicated by SSU rRNA phylogenies. We made the first attempt to elucidate relationships between species in clade II using both morphological and multi-gene approaches, and our data supported a close relationship between some morphospecies of Vorticella and Opisthonecta, indicating that relationships between species in the clade are far more complex than would be expected from their morphology. Different patterns of helix III of ITS2 secondary structure were clearly specific to clades and subclades of Vorticella and, therefore, may prove useful for resolving phylogenetic relationships in other groups of ciliates.  相似文献

The infraciliature and myoneme system of Campanella umbellaria were revealed using the protargol impregnation technique. The main characteristics of the infraciliature are the peristomial ciliary rows (haplokinety and polykineties), which make four and a half turns around the peristomial disc before plunging into the infundibulum, and the aboral infraciliature, which is made up of the aboral ciliary wreath (trochal band) and the scopula. The myoneme system is composed of: 1) longitudinal fibers, which include 60-84 (mean 72.3) short longitudinal fibers, 40-56 (mean 45.8) medium-length longitudinal fibers, and numerous long longitudinal fibers; and 2) circular fibers, which include 8-12 (mean 9.3) peristomial ring fibers, linking fibers, support fibers, and peristomial disc fibers. The various fibers in C. umbellaria are interconnected to form a single myoneme system that may act as a cell skeleton as well as providing the mechanism by which the zooid contracts and relaxes.  相似文献

Specimens of the marine tanaid crustacea Halmyrapseudes spaansi, sampled in temporary littoral muddy patches near the mouth of the Kaw river (French Guiana, SE America), showed protozoan epibionts herein described as a new species: Cothurnia guyanensis sp. n. (Ciliophora, Peritrichia). These ciliates were covered by a cylindrical or bell-shaped lorica containing an oval elongated zooid with a rounded contractile vacuole located anteriorly in lateral position. The macronucleus was “S” shaped. The peristomial disk was anterior and included a polikinety and a haplokinety. The external stalk was short and broad, with 8–18 longitudinal conspicuous striations. Between the external stalk and the zooid, there were an endostyle and an mesostyle both short and broad. The striations of the external stalk were prolonged in the mesostyle. Telotroch stages were observed and described, as well as specimens with two zooids per lorica. Epibionts located on the ventral area, pereopods and antennae of the basibiont.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. A species of peritrich that attaches to gills of the skate, Raja erinacea , was identified by its original describer as a member of Caliperia , a genus characterized by having a noncontractile skeletal rod within the arms of its cinctum and by not having the cinctal arms bonded to one another at their tips. Our observations of the living ciliates confirmed by protargol impregnation and electron microscopy revealed that their cinctal arms are linked by a bouton and that the cytoskeletal structure within them has the fine structure of a myoneme. These characteristics place this peritrich unequivocally in the genus Ellobiophrya and it is thus renamed Ellobiophrya brevipes (Laird, 1959) n. comb. Clumps of epithelial cells clasped by the cincta of E. brevipes show damage at their bases but not on their luminal surfaces. The known species of Ellobiophrya are compared for significant structural differences that separate species of this genus.  相似文献

An epizoic loricate peritrich, Lagenophrys lunatus Imamura, was found in North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland on the exoskeleton of the palaemonid shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio, P. intermedius, P. vulgaris, P. paludosus, and Macrobrachium ohione. L. lunatus prefers to attach onto or near the appendages of the host where water movement over the exoskeleton is strongest. The symbionts depend for their food on particles of the host's food and phytoplankton swept to them by these water currents. They attach to other areas of the exoskeleton only when the preferred areas are filled. Trophic individuals are stimulated to undergo a special type of division in advance of the molt of the host that results in the evacuation from the old exoskeleton. Conjugation occurs en masse and has only been observed during molting of the host.  相似文献

Ultrastructural and protargol studies reveal that the trophont of Lagenophrys callinectes, though highly specialized, generally conforms to the basic peritrich structural pattern. Features described for L. callinectes trophonts which are unique for the genus are the fine structure and arrangement of the lorica and lips, the attachment organelle of the peristomial cytoplasm, its attachment to the loricastome walls, and the arrangement of the aboral kinetosomes of the trophont. Lack of a distinct scopularized region, and of a ventral lorica wall also characterize L. callinectes trophonts. The 4-row terminal peniculus, as revealed by protargol staining, differs from the 6-row terminal peniculus of L. nassa suggesting that the patterns of infundibular structure, as revealed by protargol, should be useful in future taxonomic studies of Lagenophrys species.  相似文献

The protozoans attached to the submerged roots of reed (Phragmites australis) in some small waters in Holland were studied during one year. Reed was chosen because it is a very common natural substrate for epiphytically living animals. Marked changes in species abundance and overall population density are reported. Most important quantitatively were the ciliates, especially peritrichs, on which emphasis is laid. Vorticella campanula Ehrenberg, 1831 is found to be the dominant species in spring and summer, other vorticellas being also very numerous. Suctorian populations seem to change strongly within weeks without apparent reason. Small attached flagellates were also common. No stalked Heliozoa or medium-sized flagellates were found. The generalisation of the results and comparisons with the literature are discussed. Zoological Laboratory, University of Amsterdam  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Peritrich ciliates of the genus Trichodina are internal or external symbionts of invertebrate and vertebrate hosts. We describe here Trichodina ctenophorii n. sp., a symbiont of Mnemiopsis mccraydii and Beroë ovata (Phylum Ctenophora). The morphology of fixed and living specimens is revealed by silver impregnation, scanning electron microscopy, and differential interference microscopy. Distinguishing features of Trichodina ctenophorii include a denticular morphology composed of falcate, blunt-tipped blades, and long, straight thorns, with five pins per denticle. Trichodina ctenophorii is found only on the comb plates of these ctenophores. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a trichodinid from the Gulf of Mexico and the first associated with ctenophores.  相似文献
