Sturgeon disappeared from the Rhône River in the mid 70’s without certitude about which species it was and about the existence of a sympatry between European sturgeon, Acipenser sturio, and Adriatic sturgeon, A. naccarii, in this watershed. In order to reach a reliable specific determination of this extinct sturgeon population, archaeozoological remains of the Jardin d’Hiver in Arles city, on the Rhône river banks, were genetically analysed, following strict criteria of authentication for the ancient DNA work. The rich collection of Arles sturgeon bone remains stems from human activities between the 6th and the 2nd Century BC. Sequences of 86 bp of the cytochrome b gene were obtained on four bones, from different anatomical parts of the fish and from different archaeological layers. All gave A. sturio diagnostic sequences. This preliminary analysis is an essential first step in the project of sturgeon reintroduction in the Rhône River. Thus, further analyses on a larger sample are necessary to comfort this result and to solve the question of sympatry with A. naccarii. 相似文献

Detection of multiple paternity in the Kemp's ridley sea turtle with limited sampling 总被引:3,自引:1,他引:3
An important question in sea turtle biology is the number of males that contribute to the fertilization of a clutch of eggs. Previous studies on other sea turtle species have indicated little to no multiple paternity. We conclude here that female Kemp's ridleys, Lepidochelys kempi , are polyandrous. DNA from 26 mother and offspring groups was analysed at three microsatellite loci to identify paternal alleles. Three paternal alleles were observed among 14 of the clutches; four paternal alleles were observed among the offspring of an additional female. A maximum likelihood analysis not only rejects the model of single paternity, but also rejects the model of equal paternal contribution to the clutch. By explicitly addressing the high mutation rate of microsatellite markers, our analysis rejected mutation as the sole cause of multiple paternal alleles. 相似文献

We investigated multiple paternity and sperm precedence in the Amarillo fish, Girardinichthys multiradiatus (Goodeidae). We allowed females to mate with two different-sized males consecutively and assessed the paternity of the ensuing broods using allozyme electrophoresis. We presented one-half of the females the larger, and the other half the smaller, male first. Allozyme variation among individuals was low, yielding conservative estimates of multiple paternity. Half the broods were of mixed paternity, but one male always sired more than 70% of the embryos in each brood. The proportion of the brood sired was not related to mating sequence, but when we classified males by relative size, the larger male of each pair usually fathered greater proportions of offspring than the smaller male. This association disappeared when we used the actual size of the males in the analysis. Instead, for any pair of males, the difference in number of offspring sired was correlated to differences in the rate of courtship displays, rather than size differences, suggesting that courtship intensity is a better predictor of paternity than male size. Within a pair, the larger male usually displayed more than the smaller one, but there was no correlation between male size and display rate across all males. Parsimony suggests a correlation between courtship rate and sperm production, but we cannot rule out the possibility that females allocate paternity according to the relative merits of the males. 相似文献

We describe seven polymorphic microsatellite loci for the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos). The microsatellites presented here are highly polymorphic, with on average 12 alleles in a sample of 15 presumably unrelated individuals. Therefore, they enable detailed parentage analysis in wild mallard populations, and can be used to answer many intriguing questions in behavioural ecology and evolutionary biology. 相似文献

Variation in correlated behaviors or behavioral syndromes couldhave interesting effects on mating systems, especially if thevariation in syndrome exists in both sexes. Both males and femalesof the lizard Eulamprus heatwolei display two behavioral typesof a behavioral syndrome, defined by correlations between territorial,exploratory, and predator avoidance behaviors. We tested howthis variation in behavioral syndrome influences reproductivesuccess, pairing patterns, and offspring weight. We used spatialbehavior and residency in the field to identify territorialand floater individuals. Females were relocated to the laboratoryto give birth, and all offspring, dams, and potential sireswere genotyped to determine offspring paternity. During fieldsurveys, 164 lizards were caught of which 27.5% were territorialand the rest were floaters. Paternity was assigned to 66% ofthe 104 offspring produced by 33 dams. Territorial sires fathereda greater proportion of the offspring of territorial dams thanfloater sires. Larger territorial males were more likely tosire the entire clutch or share paternity with fewer additionalsires than smaller territorial males. Floater sire size, however,did not influence the number of fathers per litter. Floaterfemales produced heavier offspring than their territorial counterparts,and offspring fathered by floaters were heavier than maternalhalf-sibs fathered by territorial males. This study reports the sequence specific chemical shifts assignments for 76 residues of the 94 residues containing monomeric unit of the photosynthetic light-harvesting 2 transmembrane protein complex from Rhodopseudomonas acidophila strain 10050, using Magic Angle Spinning (MAS) NMR in combination with extensive and selective biosynthetic isotope labeling methods. The sequence specific chemical shifts assignment is an essential step for structure determination by MAS NMR. Assignments have been performed on the basis of 2-dimensional proton-driven spin diffusion 13C–13C correlation experiments with mixing times of 20 and 500 ms and band selective 13C–15N correlation spectroscopy on a series of site-specific biosynthetically labeled samples. The decreased line width and the reduced number of correlation signals of the selectively labeled samples with respect to the uniformly labeled samples enable to resolve the narrowly distributed correlation signals of the backbone carbons and nitrogens involved in the long -helical transmembrane segments. Inter-space correlations between nearby residues and between residues and the labeled BChl a cofactors, provided by the 13C–13C correlation experiments using a 500 ms spin diffusion period, are used to arrive at sequence specific chemical shift assignments for many residues in the protein complex. In this way it is demonstrated that MAS NMR methods combined with site-specific biosynthetic isotope labeling can be used for sequence specific assignment of the NMR response of transmembrane proteins. 相似文献

The differential allocation hypothesis predicts that females should invest more in reproduction when paired with attractive males. We measured egg volume in Cape sugarbirds (Promerops cafer), a sexually dimorphic passerine, in relation to paternity of the offspring and in response to an experimental tail length treatment. We manipulated tail length, after pair formation, but before egg laying: males had their tails either shortened or left unmanipulated. Our manipulation was designed to affect female allocation in a particular breeding attempt rather than long‐term mate choice: males with shortened tails would appear to be signalling at a lower level than they should given their quality. We found that egg volume was smaller in the nests of males with experimentally shortened tails but larger when the offspring were the result of extra‐pair matings. Both these findings are consistent with the differential allocation hypothesis. We suggest that tail length may be used by females as a cue for mate quality, eliciting reduced female investment when breeding with social mates; and with males with shortened tails. 相似文献
