Fifty-six compounds from the odor of calling, sexually mature, laboratory reared males of the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae) were isolated by headspace trapping on Tenax columns and identified using GC/MS techniques (69 total compounds were detected). Electroantennogram responses (EAGs) to 54 of the 56 identified compounds as well as 5 analogs were tested on both sexes. Significant differences between the sexes in their responsiveness were found in 9 of the 54 identified compounds tested. There was no correlation between the amplitude of the EAG response and the relative abundance of compound identified from headspace analysis. Of the five major identified components, three elicited relatively small EAG responses, while two elicited large EAGs compared to the hexan-1-ol standard. The relative ranking of EAG responses were: methyl and ethyl hexenoates and hexanoates > C4–C6 esters and/or acetates > ethyl and methyl octenoates > monoterpenes > sesquiterpenes > C2–C5 acetates, alcohols and ketones. Behavioral bioassays on each of the five major identified components as well as a blend of six of the compounds showed some degree of attractancy to virgin females which in some cases approached the response to a pheromonal standard (male odors absorbed onto filter paper). These results are discussed in relationship to the insect's antennal sensitivity to putative pheromone components and/or allomonal components and to other reported C. capitata pheromone studies.

Carrion flower stapeliads are examples of olfactory mimicry, forming sapromyiophilous flowers, which mimic food sources or oviposition sites to attract fly pollinators. The aim of this work was to investigate the ultrastructure of osmophores involved in the release of the carrion odor of Orbea variegata and Boucerosia indica flowers. In spite of their similar architecture (epidermal epithelium+subepidermal secretory layers), the osmophores of stapeliads feature some differences in morphology and ultrastructure. The epidermal epithelial cells of O. variegata and B. indica differ in shape, but both are extremely rich in endoplasmic reticulum and flocculent material in the vacuole. Unlike the Orbea, Boucerosia has starchless leucoplasts in the epidermal epithelium. Orbea features a cuticle with microchannels, while Boucerosia has a different mechanism for the pathway of scent substances to the cell exterior. They are released by rupturing of the outer layer of cuticle at the apex of the papillae. The epidermal cells of the adaxial corolla differ even between parts of the corolla, the corolla lobes and the annulus in the flower. This diversity may be connected with an odor gradient. The morphological and anatomical features of stapeliad (subtribe Stapeliinae) osmophores are generally similar to osmophores of members of subtribe Ceropegiinae (Ceropegia), thus, we suggest that this model of osmophores evolved before early diversification of Ceropegieae. The ultrastructural features of stapeliad osmophores are generally similar to those of Araceae, Orchidaceae and Passifloraceae.

Many parasitic wasps (parasitoids) exploit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by herbivore-infested plants in order to locate their hosts, but it remains largely unknown which specific compounds within the volatile blends elicit the attractiveness to parasitoids. One way of studying the importance of specific VOCs is to test the attractiveness of odor blends from which certain compounds have been emitted. We used this approach by testing the attraction of naive and experienced females of the two parasitoids Cotesia marginiventris and Microplitis rufiventris to partially altered volatile blends of maize seedlings (Zea mays var. Delprim) infested with Spodoptera littoralis larvae. Adsorbing filter tubes containing carbotrap-C or silica were installed in a four-arm olfactometer between the odor source vessels and the arms of the olfactometer. The blends breaking through were tested for chemical composition and attractiveness to the wasps. Carbotrap-C adsorbed most of the sesquiterpenes, but the breakthrough blend remained attractive to naive C. marginiventris females. Silica adsorbed only some of the more polar VOCs, but this essentially eliminated all attractiveness to naive C. marginiventris, implying that among the adsorbed compounds there are some that play key roles in the attraction. Unlike C. marginiventris, M. rufiventris was still attracted to the latter blend, showing that parasitoids with a comparable biology may employ different strategies in their use of plant-provided cues to locate hosts. Results from similar experiments with modified odor blends of caterpillar-infested cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) indicate that key VOCs in different plant species vary greatly in quality and/or quantity. Finally, experienced wasps were more strongly attracted to a specific blend after they perceived the blend while ovipositing in a host. Considering the high number of distinct adsorbing materials available today, this in situ modification of complex volatile blends provides a new and promising approach pinpointing on key attractants within these blends. Advantages and disadvantages compared to other approaches are discussed.

Honeybee (Apis mellifera) colonies rob honey from each other during periods of nectar shortage. Persistent robbing can killweak colonies. Primarily responsible for preventing robbingare guard bees. Previous research has shown that the probabilityof both nest mate and non-nest mate workers being acceptedby guards at the nest entrance increases as nectar availability increases. The mechanism responsible for this change in guardacceptance can be explained by two competing hypotheses: OdorConvergence and Adaptive Threshold Shift. In this study wetested the Odor Convergence hypothesis. The acceptance by guardsat the nest entrance of workers transferred between four coloniesthat had been fed either odorless sucrose syrup (two colonies)or diluted heather honey (Calluna vulgaris) (two colonies)was measured for 3 days before feeding and during 2 weeks offeeding. Despite the large sample sizes, the probability ofguards accepting non-nest mates was not affected by the similaritiesor dissimilarities in food odor between guards' and non-nestmates' colonies. This finding contrasts with the accepted wisdom that food odors are important in nest mate recognition in honeybeesand the data, therefore, strongly reject the Odor Convergencehypothesis.

Ring‐tailed lemurs reside in many animal collections worldwide. Lemur welfare may be a cause of concern due to some captive individuals exhibiting stereotypic behavior. Despite these concerns, there has been little exploration of methods of environmental enrichment for ring‐tailed lemurs. Olfactory stimulation can enhance captive animal welfare by encouraging species‐typical behaviors, enhancing behavioral diversity, and decreasing stereotypic behaviors. We aimed to investigate the effects of olfactory stimulation via lavender, peppermint, coconut, and prey odor upon the behavior of eight captive ring‐tailed lemurs. We exposed the lemurs to six individual odor conditions (odor control, novel object control, lavender, peppermint, coconut, and Morio worms) and observed them for 4 hr a day for 3 days with an intervening period of 4 days between conditions. We recorded the lemurs’ behavior under each condition using instantaneous scan sampling. We found significant effects of olfactory stimulation on the ring‐tailed lemurs’ behavior in the initial analysis but these did not survive correction for multiple testing. Overall, while our findings are suggestive of a general effect of olfactory stimulation on the captive ring‐tailed lemurs they did not indicate a marked influence of olfactory condition. However, further investigation with a larger sample size and more biologically relevant odors may be beneficial to fully examine potential effects of olfactory stimulation in captive lemurs.

Plumage odors may function as chemical defenses against ectoparasites in birds. We tested this hypothesis for crested auklets (Aethia cristatella), a species of colonial seabird that emits a very strong citrus-like odor from its plumage. This odorant contains known chemical repellents. We evaluated evidence for chemical defense in this species using two approaches. First, we exposed pigeon lice to the volatiles emitted by freshly plucked plumage and by whole specimens. Louse survivorship was compared between these treatments and two controls. Second, we compared louse abundance on crested auklets versus a closely related congener that nests in close association. Louse survivorship did not differ between crested auklet treatments and controls. Comparison of ectoparasite loads showed that crested auklets had significantly higher louse abundance than least auklets (A. pusilla), even after controlling for body size. Our results failed to support two expectations for chemical defense. Presence of the crested auklet plumage odorant in our experiments did not reduce louse life span. Presence of the aldehyde odorant in nature did not reduce louse abundance on crested auklets. Hence we conclude that the aldehyde odorant is not immediately lethal to lice at natural concentrations in plumage.

Although the neural control of behavior has been extensively studied in gastropods, basic gaps remain in our understanding of how sensory stimuli are processed. In particular, there is only patchy evidence regarding the functional roles of sense organs and the extensive peripheral nervous system they contain. Our goal was to use extracellular electrophysiological recordings to confirm the chemosensory role of the tentacles in the great pond snail, Lymnaea stagnalis. Employing a special twin-channel suction electrode to improve signal-to-noise ratio, we applied three food odors (derived from earthworm-based food pellets, algae-based pellets, and fresh lettuce) to a reduced preparation of the tentacle while recording neuronal activity in the tentacle nerve. Responses were assessed by comparing average spike frequencies produced in response to saline flow with and without odors. We report stronger neuronal responses to earthworm-based food odors and weaker responses to algae-based food odors. There were no clear neuronal responses produced when lettuce food odor or control saline was applied to the tentacle. Overall, our results provide strong evidence for the chemosensory role of the tentacles in navigation behavior by L. stagnalis. Although it is unclear whether the differences in neuronal responses to different odors are a technical consequence of our recording system or a genuine feature of the snail sensory system, these results are a useful foundation for further study of peripheral nervous system function in gastropods.

Among Callitrichids, scent secretions have been identified as carrying information regarding species, subspecies, gender, social status, individuality, hormonal status, and timing of ovulation. We propose that information regarding familiarity and reproductive status is also communicated. Seven male–female pairs of cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus oedipus) were presented with several drops of distilled water, a scent secretion from the female of that pair, scent secretions from unfamiliar, reproductively mature but noncycling females, and scent secretions from unfamiliar, reproductively cycling females. Behavioral responses from both males and females were recorded over a 10 min period. Differences in behavioral response for both males and females were significant across all four conditions. This indicates that cotton-top tamarins are capable of discriminating a familiar scent from an unfamiliar scent as well as the reproductive status of an unfamiliar female. The communication of this information may play an important role in regulating mate selection, reducing reproductive competition, and stabilizing transfers in and out of groups in the wild. Am. J. Abstrac  In the course of anaerobic storage of excess sludge, odors due to chemicals such as hydrogen sulfide are produced. These odors cause many problems. Many methods have been developed to eliminate odors, but all current methods are not only costly, but also largely ineffective. In this paper, we investigate the process of transformation of sludge microorganism cultures through intense aeration under nutrient-poor conditions, in terms of the selective adjustment and control of microorganism culture. The aerated sludge is subsequently returned to the adjusting pool, where the microorganisms inhibit odors, thus the excess sludge itself will act as an odor inhibitor. The process can be verified in terms of viability, in that the degradation capacity of the sludge was maintained after the intensely-aerated sludge was returned to the treatment system.
