ABSTRACT. 1. Gregarines, debilitating gut parasites, significantly reduced longevity and increased weight loss in the field cricket Gryllus pennsylvanicus Burmeiser when adults were kept on suboptimal diets, but in G.pennsylvanicus and G.veletis (Alexander and Bigelow) fed ad libitum , weight change, longevity, and fecundity were not significantly different in infected and control individuals.
2. Adults harbouring gregarines at eclosion took significantly longer to develop from the second and third instars than did uninfected adults.
3. Longevity of nymphs kept in the laboratory without food was decreased in infected individuals compared with uninfected ones, but not significantly so.
4. The evolutionary and ecological implications of nonlethal parasites are discussed.  相似文献

The role of interactions between chemical perturbations and biological constraints on detritivores occurring in polluted streams were investigated by analysing food absorption variation with stress. Absorption rate and efficiency of four Asellus aquaticus (L.) populations from differently polluted habitats were quantified with respect to the microbial guilds colonizing detritus. A twin tracer method was used. Detritus was microbially colonized in standard conditions and on each stream bottom to control for potential resource-independent variations among individuals. The relationship between length and weight was also determined on a random sample of individuals of each population. Differences of 14.6% in potential absorption efficiency and 11.3% in potential absorption rate were observed between populations from the least and the most polluted habitat. Actual (realized) variations were much stronger: from a minimum of a 60.1% reduction in absorption efficiency to a maximum of 93.8% for the rate. The realized food absorption and the individual weight per length showed the same pattern of variation among populations. This suggested that the availability of energy to isopods in nature was related to stream pollution and resource quality. Bottomup interactions appear to be the most relevant pathway through which chemical water pollution affects the Asellus populations studied. The potential resource-independent variations among individuals are also likely to be explained by temporal cascading of resource-mediated effects.  相似文献

Besides manipulating nitrate uptake and allocation, nitrate transporters (NRTs) are also known to play crucial roles in pathogen defense and stress response. By blasting with the model NRT genes of poplar and Arabidopsis, a total of 408 gene members were identified from 5 maize inbred lines in which the number of NRTs ranged from 72 to 88. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the NRT genes of maize were classified into NRT1/PTR (NPF), NRT2 and NRT3 subfamilies, respectively. Marked divergence of the duplication patterns of NRT genes were identified, which may be a new basis for classification and identification of maize varieties. In terms of biotic stress, NRT2.5A showed an enhanced expression during the pathogen infection of Colletotrichum graminicola, while NRT1c4C was down-regulated, suggesting that maize NRT transporters may have both positive and negative roles in the disease resistance response. This work will promote the further studies of NRT gene families in maize, as well as be beneficial for further understanding of their potential roles in plant-pathogen interactions.  相似文献

We have examined the effect of addition of hydroxocobalamin to growth medium on the activity of the adenosylcobalamin-requiring enzyme methylmalonyl CoA mutase in normal human fibroblasts and in mutant human fibroblasts derived from patients with inherited methylmalonicacidemia. The mutant cell lines were assigned to four distinct genetic complementation groups (cbl A, cbl B, cbl C, and cbl D), each deficient in some step in the synthesis of adenosylcobalamin from hydroxocobalamin. After control cells were grown in cobalamin-supplemented medium, mutase holoenzyme activity increased markedly in a time- and concentration-dependent fashion. Growth in cobalamin-supplemented medium had no effect on mutase activity in some mutant lines belonging to the cbl B group, while activity increased severalfold in other cbl B mutants and in all cbl A, cbl C, and cbl D mutants examined, although mutase activity was still <10% of control. Comparison of mutase holoenzyme activity and total propionate pathway activity suggests that enhancement of mutase activity in mutant cells after cobalamin supplementation to values 5–10% of control may be sufficient to overcome the inherited metabolic block and to restore total pathway activity to normal.This work was supported in part by a research grant from the National Institutes of Health (AM 12579). In floodplain ponds with low piscivore abundance, both endemic Midgley's gudgeons, Hypseleotris sp. 5, and exotic mosquitofish, Gambusia holbrooki, showed significant ontogenetic variation in the use of food and space. Small gudgeons were generally associated with surface and benthic habitats, then restricted their distribution to benthic habitats at a size of approximately 24mm (standard length). The ontogenetic variation in mosquitofish habitat use was less discrete, and could be described as a tendency for larger individuals to be associated with the bottom of the littoral macrophyte beds than with the surface of the macrophyte beds or surface of the limnetic zone. Small gudgeons exhibited high spatial overlap with mosquitofish within the surface habitats of the ponds. All size-class/species comparisons showed significant partitioning of food resources, however, the diets of small gudgeons and mosquitofish were very similar. Therefore, juvenile gudgeons may have to pass through a similar spatial and trophic niche to introduced mosquitofish before recruiting to the adult stage. Possible mechanisms driving the ontogenetic variation in gudgeon and mosquitofish habitat use are discussed. This paper demonstrates that ontogenetic niche shifts at fine spatial scales can affect our interpretation of interactions between native and introduced fishes.  相似文献

Abstract Fungal species composition, moisture content, percentage weight loss, and instantaneous decay rate (expressed by rate of CO2 evolution) was assessed for a total of 186 8 cm3 cubes from 10 beech logs which had been decomposing on the forest floor for 14 months. There was considerable within and between branch variation in decay rate and water content. Water content at the time of sampling was not directly correlated with percentage weight loss or instantaneous decay rate, nor was it correlated with position in the log. However, wood occupied by Ascomycotina (other than Nectria ) tended to be drier than that occupied by Basidiomycotina. In particular wood occupied by Xylaria hypoxylon was drier than that occupied by all other species, although wood in which X. hypoxylon was replacing other fungi was wetter than when X. hypoxylon was alone. Variation in percentage weight loss could not be explained in terms of water content and fungal species composition at the time of sampling, but variation in instantaneous decay rate could. Thus, decay rate by Ascomycotina was significantly less ( P < 0.05) than by Basidiomycotina, and rate of CO2 evolution from wood occupied by X. hypoxylon alone was significantly slower than from wood in which X. hypoxylon was replacing H. fragiforme or Nectria . The latter was partially correlated with water content but whether this is a cause and effect relationship is uncertain.  相似文献

Extremely high degrees of lead tolerance, measured by comparing rates of root extension in culture solutions, are reported from populations of Festuca ovina growing at two lead-mining sites (Westschacht and Keldenich-II) near Mechernich in the Eifel Mountains, Germany. Other populations from nearby heavy metal-contaminated areas show a considerably smaller degree of lead tolerance. Samples of Festuca ovina collected in the field at Westschacht and Keldenich-II contain higher levels of lead in their aerial organs than do those from other lead-contaminated sites. The main soil factor determining the high degree of lead tolerance is the high Pb/Ca ratio. Populations from soils with a low Pb/Ca ratio display a very low degree of tolerance. It is therefore concluded that in Westschacht and Keldenich-II plants, a genuine intracellular tolerance mechanism is present, allowing the accumulation of lead in aerial organs.Leaf samples of zinc-tolerant Festuca contain higher levels of zinc than do samples of non-tolerant plants. Lead and zinc amounts in leaves are correlated with the soil ratios of Pb/Ca and Zn/Ca, respectively, rather than with the absolute soil-metal levels.In a slightly lead-tolerant, but highly zinc-tolerant clone of Festuca ovina from a site contaminated with large amounts of lead and zinc (Plombières), lead was found to be the major factor affecting the inhibition of root extension with combined treatments of lead and zinc in culture solutions. In the highly lead-tolerant, zinc-sensitive population from Westschacht, zinc governs the response of root growth to combinations of the two metals. The results are discussed in terms of discriminating distinct types of heavy-metal tolerance.  相似文献

Heterostyly is a genetically controlled floral polymorphism usually associated with an incompatibility system. This set of features is known to occur in several angiosperm families, but some aspects of its biology has not been well studied. The present study investigates cellular aspects of the pollen–pistil interaction after compatible and incompatible pollinations of Psychotria nuda, to increase our knowledge of heteromorphic self-incompatibility (HetSI). The use of bright field, fluorescence and transmission electron microscopy methods allowed us to demonstrate that pollen tubes behave differently after incompatible and compatible pollinations. Pollen tubes were particularly distinct after incompatible pollinations of L- and S-morph flowers. Relative to compatible pollen tubes, incompatible L-morph tubes had a drastic reduction in cellular contents, but no cell rupture. Incompatible S-morph tubes exhibited dense cytoplasm in apical regions, as well as in other regions, accompanied by a rupture of the apex. These results support the hypothesis that L- and S-morph flowers have different incompatibility mechanisms during HetSI.  相似文献
