Summary Melanomacrophages (MMs) are a component of an internal, pigmented cell system in liver and splenic tissues of some fishes, anurans, and reptiles. The cells have been found in centers or aggregates in sinusoids and are associated with cells capable of producing a peptide cytokine and immunoglobulins. A unique cell extension process has been observed in turtle MMs placed into cell culture, and this process has been studied by light and atomic force microscopy. These structures, referred to as cablepodia, are uniquely straight, narrow, and unbranching and appear to originate from growth cones opposite lamellipodia. Cablepodia were found to connect with other turtle MMs and fibroblasts forming cell networks. Dividing fibroblasts to which a cablepodium attached ceased cell division. The observations collectively suggest that a principal reason for aggregations of MMs in internal organs of lower vertebrates in their ability to form interconnected networks of cell processes for trapping and processing of particulate matter, cells and infectious organisms and, possibly, for the communication of cell signals and transfer of intracellular materials.  相似文献

The histological architecture of major immune organs in the Malabar grouper Epinephelus malabaricus was investigated. The novel characteristics such as melanomacrophage centres (MMCs) appeared in the thymus and lymphopoietic tissue formed as foci in the head kidney. Leukocyte distribution in organs was identified by enzyme histochemistry. β‐glucuronidase (BG) reactive cells in the cortex region of the thymus were botryoidally aggregated. Both acid phosphatase (AcP) and BG reactive cells concentrated within the specialized lymphopoietic foci in the head kidney, suggesting that the foci might be functional. Primitive histological characters of immunity were observed in the spleen. Although leukocyte aggregation was demonstrated in the spleen, additional enzyme histochemistry indicated that the aggregate might not be the equivalent of white pulp found in other vertebrates. The histological evidence did not support intestinal involvement in the immune system: there was no demonstrable gut associated lymphoid tissue. The limited distribution in the cortex and medulla boundary and the condensed format of the lymphocytes suggests a functional role for the MMC in the thymus of E. malabaricus . The MMC appearance in the thymus of a teleost was unusual.  相似文献

We describe the histological characteristics of the testis and spermatogenesis of the cave molly Poecilia mexicana, a viviparous teleost inhabiting a sulfur spring cave, Cueva del Azufre, in Tabasco, Southern Mexico. P. mexicana has elongate spermatogonial restricted testes with spermatogonia arranged in the testicular periphery. Germ cell development occurs within spermatocysts. As spermatogenesis proceeds, the spermatocysts move longitudinally from the periphery of the testis to the efferent duct system, where mature spermatozoa are released. The efferent duct system consists of short efferent duct branches connected to a main efferent duct, opened into the genital pore. Spermatogenesis consisted of the following stages: spermatogonia (A and B), spermatocytes (primary and secondary), spermatids, and spermatozoa. The spermatozoa are situated within spermatocysts, with their heads oriented toward the periphery and flagella toward the center. Once in the efferent duct system, mature spermatozoa are packaged as unencapsulated sperm bundles, that is, spermatozeugmata. We suggest that the histological characteristics of the testis and spermatogenesis of P. mexicana from the Cueva del Azufre, and the viviparous condition where the spermatozoa enter in the female without been in the water, have allowed them to invade sulfurous and/or subterranean environments in Southern Mexico, without requiring complex morphofunctional changes in the testis or the spermatogenetic process.  相似文献
