Raisins were a better source of carbohydrate than sucrose for reproduction by autogenous Culex pipiens. A blood meal increased the number of eggs per raft from 49 autogenously to 114. Eggs of aposymbiotic females produced autogenously did not hatch, but 34% of the eggs were viable if the mosquitoes fed on chickens. With repeated blood meals the number of eggs per raft and the rate of embryonation and hatching declined in each successive gonotrophic cycle. In about 14 of the unhatched eggs of normal females there were no fully developed embryos, while many more of the unhatched eggs of aposymbiotic females contained no evidence of embryonic development. After the fifth blood meal, neither normal nor aposymbiotic insects oviposited. The ovaries of the nulliparous females contained approximately 10% of the potential number of mature terminal oocytes. Proximally in the ovarioles there were dilatations and coiled tracheoles indicating egg resorption. There were fewer parous follicles in aposymbiotic than in normal females. Larval rearing water, i.e., infusion in which larvae had been reared, was more attractive than fresh infusion for oviposition by normal, autogenous mosquitoes. The degree of embryonation of the eggs was lower and the hatching success rate was poorer in fresh infusion than in larval rearing water.  相似文献

Feeding behavior, in an ad libitum situation on potato plants in the laboratory, was continuously observed for approximately 7 h/day on 2 successive days for 18 adult femaleLeptinotarsa decemlineata. Additional behaviors were also recorded including resting, walking, biting, local movements, grooming, defecating, and regurgitating. These data were used to calculate a time budget for the various behaviors. The feeding data were analyzed to describe the structure of feeding for young adult females on their normal host plant. The criterion for a meal (minimum intermeal interval) was determined to be 286 s. This criterion was used to distinguish between intra- and intermeal interruptions in feeding for all subsequent analyses. Meals taken from leaves that were young, medium aged, or old did not differ, but on average beetles took 60% of their meals from young leaves. Meal size and meal duration were equally good predictors of when a meal would end. Feeding from stems was a prominent feature for most beetles. The stem meals had much longer durations than leaf meals, but stem feeding did not affect subsequent leaf feeding. The structure of feeding by these beetles is compared with that found in other insects, especiallyLocusta migratoria.  相似文献

为了解抗菌肽在饵料微藻中表达后的抗菌特性,构建海洋微拟球藻(Nannochloropsis oceanica)、湖泊微拟球藻(N.limnetica)和三角褐指藻(Phaeodactylum tricornutum)的抗菌肽(源自虹鳟,Cath-1a)表达质粒,分别转化相应的微藻,检测转化子中抗菌肽的表达量和体外抑菌效果,将藻株作为鱼饲料添加剂喂食斑马鱼,初步分析了抗菌肽及藻体自身的岩藻黄素和多不饱和脂肪酸对鱼免疫系统的影响。结果表明,外源抗菌肽在3种微藻中均可以成功表达,体外抑菌试验表明,仅三角褐指藻对水产领域常见致病菌爱德华氏菌(Edwardsiella tarda)有一定的抑菌效果,然而抗菌肽的表达并未使3种藻株的体外抑菌性增加。添加藻粉对斑马鱼的生长无明显影响,通过检测鱼体肝脏中与抗氧化和免疫相关基因的表达水平及丙二醛的含量,表明添加藻粉可增强斑马鱼的抗氧化和抗炎症能力,表达抗菌肽(PtC组)能进一步提高斑马鱼的免疫力。另外,添加Pt6(富含岩藻黄素)藻粉组比添加PtC的抗炎效果更显著,表明三角褐指藻中的岩藻黄素和二十碳五烯酸对增强鱼的抗病能力具有潜在作用。  相似文献

Bacillus thuringiensis subsp.israelensis andB. sphaericus strains 2362 and 1593 were grown in media based on defatted mustard-seed meal (MSM). The meal contains 40% (w/w) protein, with glutamic acid and arginine as the major amino acids. The toxic potencies of the final bacterial powders towardsCulex pipens quinquefasciatus Say, compared with those of the respective international reference standards, were 46% forB. thuringiensis subsp.israelensis, 62% forB. sphaericus 2362 and 88% forB. sphaericus 1593 when 2% (w/v) MSM was used for growth. With 4% (w/v) MSM,B. thuringiensis subsp.israelensis grew better but had undetectable larvicidal activity, whereas theB. sphaericus strains not only grew better but gave a higher degree of sporulation and toxicity. The bulbous tubular portion of the median ejaculatory duct functions as the accessory gland in the male stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans. The gland started to enlarge after emergence when the fly was fed on sugar-water or blood. Implants of accessory glands from sugar-water or blood-fed males were effective in stimulating oviposition in virgin females. The injection into females of accessory-gland extracts from males fed blood prevented insemination; this extract was effective in concentration as low as 0.25 gland per female. Accessory-gland extracts from sugar-water fed males were only partially effective in preventing female insemination. However, the accessory-gland extracts of male stable flies had little effect on insemination when injected into three other species of female dipterans.Spermatogenesis was completed by the time of emergence, or shortly thereafter, a process independent of blood feeding. Three types of spermatids were identified, forming a continuum of spermiogenesis stages. Fat, fusiform spermatozoa elongated to become thin, elongate and mature spermatozoa.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that the inhibition of chitin synthesis by benzoylphenyl ureas could be explained by their effect on the uptake of GlcNAc into chitin. Our test system consisted of organ cultures of wing imaginal discs from Plodia interpunctella. These wing discs synthesize chitin in response to 20-hydroxyecdysone or RH 5849, a non-steroidal ecdysteroid mimic. Two benzoylphenyl ureas, diflubenzuron and teflubenzuron, inhibited ecdysteroid-dependent chitin synthesis in the wing discs. However, although chitin synthesis was inhibited, there was no corresponding diminution of amino sugar uptake by the imaginal discs. In another experiment 20-hydroxyecdysone stimulated uptake of two sugars, 2-deoxy-D-glucose and 3-O-methyl-D-glucose, which are not synthesized into chitin. Transport of these non-metabolized sugars was unaffected by the inhibitors. In an additional test of the effects on precursor transport, the action of ecdysone (alpha-ecdysone) was examined. Ecdysone stimulated amino sugar uptake, but not chitin synthesis. Neither diflubenzuron nor teflubenzuron inhibited ecdysone-dependent precursor transport. Finally, we examined ecdysteroid-induced uptake of amino sugars by an imaginal disc derived cell line IAL-PID2. In this case, also, GlcNAc transport was not inhibited significantly by either diflubenzuron or teflubenzuron. From these observations we conclude that inhibition of uptake of amino sugars does not account for the ability of teflubenzuron and diflubenzuron to inhibit chitin synthesis in P. interpunctella wing discs.  相似文献

The molting process and body growth in Rhodnius prolixus (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) (Ståhl, 1859) are significantly influenced by the availability and quality of food. Based on the body weight of each stage, the present study provides estimates of a potential critical weight threshold required for molt initiation in R. prolixus. In addition, a new measure given by the area under the weight curve is proposed, which encapsulates both body weight and time. It is shown that this measure is consistent with the data, and allows the estimation of a pre‐refractory period (i.e. the time interval between the moment at which the critical weight threshold is reached and the moment when no further meals are accepted). The present analysis estimates the critical weight threshold as 1.6, 5.3, 12.9, 42.0 and 97.0 mg for stages 1–5, respectively, whereas the values of the area under the curve threshold as 5, 16, 31.2, 159.7 and 329.9 mg days for stages 1–5, respectively. The results of the present study confirm the existence of a weight‐dependent mechanism for the initiation of molting in R. prolixus.  相似文献

Soybean meal is rich in soybean isoflavones, which exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral and anticancer functions in humans and animals. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of soybean isoflavones on the growth performance, intestinal morphology and antioxidative properties in pigs. A total of 72 weaned piglets (7.45 ± 0.13 kg; 36 males and 36 females) were allocated into three treatments and fed corn-soybean meal (C-SBM), corn-soy protein concentrate (C-SPC) or C-SPC supplemented with equal levels of the isoflavones found in the C-SBM diet (C-SPC + ISF) for a 72-day trial. Each treatment had six replicates and four piglets per replicate, half male and half female. On day 42, one male pig from each replicate was selected and euthanized to collect intestinal samples. The results showed that compared to pigs fed the C-SPC diet, pigs fed the C-SBM and C-SPC + ISF diets had higher BW on day 72 (P < 0.05); pigs fed the C-SBM diet had significantly higher average daily gain (ADG) during days 14 to 28 (P < 0.05), with C-SPC + ISF being intermediate; pigs fed the C-SBM diet tended to have higher ADG during days 42 to 72 (P = 0.063), while pigs fed the C-SPC + ISF diet had significantly higher ADG during days 42 to 72 (P < 0.05). Moreover, compared to pigs fed the C-SPC diet, pigs fed the C-SBM diet tended to have greater villus height (P = 0.092), while pigs fed the C-SPC + ISF diet had significantly greater villus height (P < 0.05); pigs fed the C-SBM and C-SPC + ISF diets had significantly increased villus height-to-crypt depth ratio (P < 0.05). Compared with the C-SPC diet, dietary C-SPC + ISF tended to increase plasma superoxide dismutase activity on days 28 (P = 0.085) and 42 (P = 0.075) and reduce plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) content on day 42 (P = 0.089), as well as significantly decreased jejunal mucosa MDA content on day 42 (P < 0.05). However, no significant difference in the expression of tight junction genes among the three groups was found (P > 0.05). In conclusion, our results suggest that a long-term exposure to soybean isoflavones enhances the growth performance, protects the intestinal morphology and improves the antioxidative properties in pigs.  相似文献

This work studied the effects of ultrasound-assisted liquid-state fermentation on the content of peptides and bioactivity of fermented soybean meal (FSBM) with Bacillus subtilis. Based on the optimization of basic ultrasonic parameters, effects of the main parameters including power density, incubation temperature and ultrasonic time on in vitro ACE inhibitory activity, peptides content and biomass of B. subtilis were investigated via Box-Behnken experimental design. Three mathematical models were determined to show the effects of each variable and their combinatorial interactions on dependent variables. A set of preferred condition was determined to be at power density of 0.08 W/mL for 1 h with an initial incubation temperature of 36.7 °C, according to the desirability function analyses. Under these conditions, the experimental values of in vitro ACE inhibitory activity, peptides content and biomass increased by 26.4%, 36.2% and 55.0% compared to those of the control, respectively, accompanied by the improvement of the peptides yield, purity and conversion rate in varying degrees. Additionally, FSBM resulted in a significant decrease of systolic blood pressure by 20.7 ± 1.8 mmHg in spontaneously hypertensive rats at 3 h. These results suggest that ultrasonication is an efficient solution for enhancing fermentation to produce bioactive components from agroindustrial by-products.  相似文献
