A wide variety of subcutaneous soft‐tissue masses may be seen in clinical practice. Clinical examination based on palpation alone is often insufficient to identify the nature and exact origin of the mass, in which case imaging is necessary. We used handheld multispectral optoacoustic imaging technology (MSOT) in a proof‐of‐principle study to image superficial fatty tumors and compare the images with diagnostic ultrasound. Fatty tumors were clearly visualized by MSOT and exhibited a spectral signature which differed from normal fatty tissue or muscle tissue. Our findings further indicated that MSOT offers highly complementary contrast to sonography. Based on the performance achieved, we foresee a promising role for MSOT in the diagnosis and evaluation of subcutaneous soft‐tissue masses. Picture : Pseudo‐color representation of a cross‐sectional multi‐spectral optoacoustic slice through a subcutaneous lipoma. Multi‐spectral information is encoded in color. The lipoma can clearly be distinguished from the surrounding tissue based on its color. Scalebar 1 cm.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: A 32-year-old, male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) kept in a zoo developed a focally extensive, proliferative, cerebriform, dermal mass at the left inner thigh extending to the inguinal region. After surgical removal, the mass recurred and extended progressively over a period of 5 years. METHODS AND RESULTS: At necropsy, a 20 x 20 cm large, well defined, papular and partly verrucous, rubbery mass composed of multiple large, soft nodules measuring up to 4 cm in diameter was observed in the left thigh and inguinal region. Histological examination revealed a multifocal expansion of the dermis by mature adipocytes that were arranged in small islands to large lobular aggregates. Dermal proliferations of adipocytes were almost completely separated from the subcutaneous adipose tissue. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report of a unique lesion that resembles human Nevus lipomatosus cutaneus superficialis in a chimpanzee and is different from lipoma or liposarcoma.  相似文献

Dercum’s disease (DD), also described as adiposis dolorosa, is a poorly understood and rare adipose tissue disorder involving obesity and painful adipose tissue masses. Patients may have associated bruising and constitutional symptoms such as fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and sleep disturbance. DD was initially described in 1888 by Francis Xavier Dercum, and was classified into four subtypes, including generalized diffuse, generalized nodular, localized nodular, and juxta-articular subtypes. While this disease has been described for more than 130 years, its etiology and treatment remain elusive. We describe a case of a patient with DD who presented to Ochsner Medical Center, New Orleans, LA, for evaluation of treatment options. We review current knowledge on this rare disease and data on modern treatment methods.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Recent studies reported no reduction in the frequency of lipomeningomyelocele (LMMC) in Hawaii and Nova Scotia after the implementation of a folic acid food fortification policy in 1998, while a marked reduction in the prevalence of other NTDs was observed. This study was performed to assess the prevalence of LMMC in Canada in relation to the timing of food fortification. METHODS: The study population included livebirths, stillbirths, and terminations of pregnancies because of fetal anomaly to women residing in seven Canadian provinces, from 1993 to 2002. In each province, the ascertainment of NTD cases relied on multiple sources, and in addition all medical charts were reviewed. The study period was divided into pre‐, partial, and full fortification periods, based on results of red cell folate tests published in the literature. RESULTS: A total of 86 LMMC cases were recorded among approximately 1.9 million live births. The average birth prevalence rate was 0.05/1,000, ranging from a minimum of 0.01/1,000 in 2002 to a maximum of 0.08/1,000 in 1999. There was statistical heterogeneity between years (p = .01), but no pattern compatible with a decrease following fortification. Comparing the full fortification period with the prefortification period, there was a slight but not statistically significant decrease in LMMC birth prevalence. CONCLUSIONS: LMMC seems to be pathogenically distinct from myelomeningocele and more studies are needed to understand the embryologic mechanisms leading to this condition, and the environmental and genetic factors involved in its etiology. The zyxin family of proteins consists of five members, ajuba, LIMD1, LPP, TRIP6 and zyxin, which localize at cell adhesion sites and shuttle to the nucleus. Previously, we established that LPP interacts with the tumor suppressor Scrib, a member of the leucine-rich repeat and PDZ (LAP) family of proteins. Here, we demonstrate that Scrib also interacts with TRIP6, but not with zyxin, ajuba, or LIMD1. We show that TRIP6 directly binds to the third PDZ domain of Scrib via its carboxy-terminus. Both proteins localize in cell-cell contacts but are not responsible to target each other to these structures. In the course of our experiments, we also characterized the nuclear export signal of human TRIP6, and show that LIMD1 is localized in focal adhesions. The binding between two of zyxin's family members and Scrib links Scrib to a communication pathway between cell-cell contacts and the nucleus, and implicates these zyxin family members in Scrib-associated functions.  相似文献

Background: Lipomas are benign solid tumours that develop in soft tissues with origin in mesenchymal progenitors. Macroscopically, they appear as soft-elastic nodules, varying in volume from a few millimiters to several centimetres and can enlarge progressively. Although they are usually asymptomatic, they can cause symptoms due to nerve or vessel compression. Microscopically they appear as fibrous connective tissue stroma with embedded adipocytes, and absence of inflammation. Up to now no characterisation of stem cell population present in this tissue has been performed. Methods: Cytofluorimetric, biological and molecular biology analyses have been performed in order to test superficial cell markers and gene expression profile related to stemness and apoptotic activity of cells present in lipoma tissues compared to those of adipose tissue''s cells. Results: Our results confirmed that CD34+ cells in lipoma were present around small adipocytes, showing several altered biological activity such as proliferation, apoptotis and stemness. Conclusions: The data emerging from the comparison of the lipoma cells and normal adipose tissue, suggests the presence of cell precursors involved in the development of the lipoma. This hypothesis requires further investigation and may indicate new thresholds in the study of benign tumour pathogenesis.  相似文献

Introduction  Brachial plexus lipomas are extremely rare benign tumors that may cause slow progression of neurological deficits leading to thoracic outlet syndrome. Up to now, surgery remains challenging. The aim of this study is to present our surgical treatment regime and long-term neurological outcome in three cases of giant brachial plexus lipomas and to show results of systematic review. Patients and Methods  Retrospective analysis of our database “peripheral nerve lesion” to identify patients suffering from brachial plexus lipomas between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2019. Systematic review was performed for literature published until March 31, 2020, analyzing PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and the Cochrane Collaboration Library independently by two authors. Results  Over the past years, three patients suffering from giant brachial plexus lipomas attended to our neurosurgical department. All patients underwent preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound examinations, and electrophysiological testing. Tumors were removed microsurgically via anterior/posterior, supraclavicular/infraclavicular, and combined approaches. The patients were accessed postoperatively by MRI and clinical follow-up. Systematic review of the literature revealed 22 cases, which were analyzed in regard to demographics, surgical treatment, and neurological outcome. Conclusion  Brachial plexus lipomas are an extremely rare cause for brachial plexus compression. Total microsurgical removal with intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring is the treatment of choice with excellent long-term MRI and clinical outcome.  相似文献
