When treated with ethylene in O2, conditioned potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Russet Burbank) tubers – that is, tubers kept at room temperature for 10 days or more – yield slices that are CN? resistant. Ten % CO2 in the gas mixture not only synergizes the effect of ethylene, but replaces the need for conditioning as well. The response to CO2 is more pronounced with increasing time from harvest. By contrast fresh slices from untreated tubers are CN? sensitive, as are slices from tubers incubated in O2 or O2 plus CO2. The suggestion is made that CN? resistance is constitutive, and that treatment with ethylene/CO2 in O2 confers on potato tuber tissue a resistance to the extensive degradation of membrane phospholipids that normally attends slicing and leads to the loss of CN? resistance. In this connection respiration inhibition by imidazole, an inhibitor of fatty acid α-oxidation, is extensive in slices of untreated tubers, and sharply diminished in slices of ethylene-treated tubers in proportion to their CN? resistance. The coextensive rise of respiration rate and CN? resistance in aged potato slices has led to the presumption that the CN?-resistant path mediates the respiration climax. Accordingly the alkaloid, lycorine, has been considered to inhibit the development of CN? resistance in aging potato slices because it curtails the wound-induced respiration. A comparison was carried out on the effect of lycorine on CN?-sensitive and CN?-resistant fresh slices – the latter obtained from ethylene/CO2-treated tubers. Lycorine suppressed the development of the wound-induced respiration without restricting the development of CN? resistance.  相似文献

The aim of the experiments was to investigate the effect of air velocity on the temperature preferred by growing pigs 12–14 weeks old. Pigs displayed a temperature preference by means of operant supplemental heating. They pushed a button connected to heating lamps. Six experiments of three weeks each and with two treatments with a group of 8 pigs each were made. Animals were housed in groups and weighed 14–20 kg at the start of the experiments. Air velocity was 0.08, 0.25 and 0.40 m/s. At each air velocity four replicates were made. Mean temperatures preferred were 17.9°C at 0.08 m/s, 20.5°C at 0.25 m/s and 21.7°C at 0.40 m/s. Within a day temperature preference fluctuated with 5.7 K at 0.08 m/s, 4.3 K at 0.25 m/s and 4.2 K at 0.4 m/s. Temperatures preferred were highest during day time.  相似文献

Airborne particulates were collected over a period of twelve months by the use of Hi-Vol samplers in the basin of Athens, Greece. N-Hexane extracts were tested in a battery ofin vitro tests for their ability to induce mutation in bacteria as well as mutation, sister chromatid exchange and morphological transformation in cultured mammalian cells. Positive results were found for mutagenicity withSalmonella strain TA98 in the Ames assay, for sister chromatid exchange induction in CHO cells and for transformation in BALB/c 3T3 cells in culture. They also showed weak non-doserelated induction of ouabain resistance in BALB/c 3T3 cells. The contribution of oxidizing and nitrating agents found in the Athens atmosphere, together with sunlight UV irradiation in the formation of direct acting mutagens and potential carcinogens from ambient polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, is suggested.Abbreviations FCS fetal calf serum - FPG fluorescent-plus-Giemsa technique - ouaR ouabain resistant - PAH polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon - SCE sister chromatid exchange - TSP total suspended particulate  相似文献

Abstract. The present study investigates the relationships between nitrogen uptake, transpiration, and carbon assimilation. Plants growing on nutrient solution were enclosed for 10–16 d in a growth chamber, where temperature, photon flux density, vapour saturation deficit and CO2 concentration were controlled. One of these factors was modified every 4 to 5 d. Shoot photosynthesis and root and shoot respiration were recorded every half-hour. Nitrogen uptake from the root medium and plant transpiration were measured daily. In most cases, an increase in photon flux density led to increases in transpiration, net daily carbon assimilation, and nitrogen uptake. By modifying transpiration rate without changing photosynthesis (varying vapour saturation deficit), or by modifying transpiration and carbon assimilation in opposite ways (varying CO2 air concentration), it was shown that nitrogen uptake does not follow transpiration, but is linked to the carbon uptake of the plant. When light was increased from low to intermediate levels, the N uptake/C assimilation ratio remained constant. At higher photon flux density, this ratio declined markedly. It is proposed that in the first case, growth is limited by carbohydrate availability, thus any increase in carbon assimilation leads to a proportional increase in nitrogen uptake, in contrast to the second situation where carbohydrates may accumulate in the plant without further nitrogen requirement.  相似文献

Abstract. Gas exchange measurements were made on single leaves of three C3 and one C4 species at air speeds of 0.4 and 4.0 m s−1 to determine if boundary layer conductance substantially affected the substomatal pressure of carbon dioxide. Boundary layer conductances to water vapour were 0.4 to 0.5 mol m−2 s−1 at the lower air speed, and 1.2 to 1.5 mol m−2 s−1 at the higher air speed. Substomatal carbon dioxide pressures were about 5 Pa lower at low boundary layer conductance in the C3 species, and about 3 Pa lower in the C4 species when measurements were made at high and moderate photosynthetic photon flux densities. No evidence of stomatal adjustment to altered boundary layer conductance was found. Photosynthetic rates at high photon flux densities were reduced by about 20% at the low air speed in the C3 species. The commonly reported values of substomatal carbon dioxide pressure for C3 and C4 species were found to occur only when measurements were made at the higher air speed.  相似文献

Gas exchange and contents of photosynthetic intermediates of leaves of Arbutus unedo L. were determined with the aim of recognizing the mechanisms of inhibition that were responsible for the midday depression of photosynthesis following exposure to dry air, and the decline in photosynthetic capacity following application of abscisic acid (ABA). Rapidly killed (<0.1 s) leaf samples were taken when gas analysis showed reduced CO2 assimilation. Determination of the contents of 3-phosphoglyceric acid (PGA), ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP), triose phosphates, fructose 1,6-bisphosphate and hexose phosphates in the samples showed that significant variation occurred only in the level of PGA. As a result, the ratio PGA/RuBP decreased with increasing inhibition of photosynthesis, particularly when application of ABA had been the cause. A comparison of metabolite patterns did not bring out qualitative differences that would have indicated that effects of ABA and of dry air had been caused by separate mechanisms. Depression of photosynthesis occurred in the presence of sufficient RuBP which indicated that the carboxylation reaction of the carbon-reduction-cycle was inhibited after application of ABA or exposure to dry air.Abbreviations and symbols ABA abscisic acid - C a partial pressure of CO2 in the ambient air - C i partial pressure of CO2 in the intercellular spaces - I quantum flux - PGA 3-phosphoglyceric acid - RuBP ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate - I L leaf temperature - w water-vapor pressure difference between leaf and air  相似文献
