Unequal investment by different sexes in their progeny is common and includes differential investment in the zygote and differential care of the young. The social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum has a sexual stage in which isogamous cells of any two of the three mating types fuse to form a zygote which then attracts hundreds of other cells to the macrocyst. The latter cells are cannibalized and so make no genetic contribution to reproduction. Previous literature suggests that this sacrifice may be induced in cells of one mating type by cells of another, resulting in a higher than expected production of macrocysts when the inducing type is rare and giving a reproductive advantage to this social cheat. We tested this hypothesis in eight trios of field‐collected clones of each of the three D. discoideum mating types by measuring macrocyst production at different pairwise frequencies. We found evidence that supported differential contribution in only two of the 24 clone pairs, so this pattern is rare and clone‐specific. In general, we did not reject the hypothesis that the mating types contribute cells relative to their proportion in the population. We also found a significant quadratic relationship between partner frequency and macrocyst production, suggesting that when one clone is rare, macrocyst production is limited by partner availability. We were also unable to replicate previous findings that macrocyst production could be induced in the absence of a compatible mating partner. Overall, mating type‐specific differential investment during sex is unlikely in microbial eukaryotes like D. discoideum.  相似文献

Sexual auxosporulation was observed in a mixed culture of two strains of Navicula directa var. directa. Two gametes did not re‐arrange in their gametangium and each adhered to the inner surfaces of the gametangial theca. Each of the two gametes of one gametangium fused with a gamete of the other gametangium iso‐gamously. As a result, two zygotes and hence two auxo‐spores were produced per paired gametangia. As the gametangial thecae kept close to the gametes during fusion, the zygote became associated with two different thecae. The presence of type IB2a of Geitler's (1973) system was confirmed by the present observations.  相似文献

The gametes of unicellular eukaryotes are morphologically identical, but are nonetheless divided into distinct mating types. The number of mating types varies enormously and can reach several thousand, yet most species have only two. Why do morphologically identical gametes need to be differentiated into self-incompatible mating types, and why is two the most common number of mating types? In this work, we explore a neglected hypothesis that there is a need for asymmetric signalling interactions between mating partners. Our review shows that isogamous gametes always interact asymmetrically throughout sex and argue that this asymmetry is favoured because it enhances the efficiency of the mating process. We further develop a simple mathematical model that allows us to study the evolution of the number of mating types based on the strength of signalling interactions between gametes. Novel mating types have an advantage as they are compatible with all others and rarely meet their own type. But if existing mating types coevolve to have strong mutual interactions, this restricts the spread of novel types. Similarly, coevolution is likely to drive out less attractive mating types. Aspects of the reproduction of Bolbocoleon piliferum N. Pringsheim, a common, small, filamentous, endophytic marine green alga, were examined by LM and TEM. These observations were combined with phylogenetic analysis of nuclear‐encoded small subunit rRNA gene sequences to assess the phylogenetic position of B. piliferum. Quadriflagellate zoospores and planozygotes derived from fusion of isogametes yielded plants with identical morphology. Zoosporangia and gametangia divided by sequential cleavages. Plugs at the apices of zoosporangia and gametangia formed during development; tubes were found at zoosporangial and gametangial apices after swarmer release. Flagellar apparatuses of zoospores and gametes were similar to those of algae in the Ulvales (Ulvophyceae), except that terminal caps were entire rather than bilobed and rhizoplasts and “stacked” microtubular root configurations were absent. Structures associated with planozygotes were identical to those observed in other algae currently assigned to Ulotrichales and Ulvales. Molecular phylogenetic analyses placed B. piliferum within the Ulvophyceae, at the base of a clade that contains representatives of the families Ulvaceae, Ulvellaceae, and Kornmanniaceae. The results support an earlier hypothesis that B. piliferum constitutes a distinct lineage. Analyses including Kornmanniaceae recover monophyletic Ulotrichales and Ulvales, whereas analyses omitting the Kornmanniaceae indicate that Ulotrichales is paraphyletic. The structures associated with gamete fusion are conserved within Ulotrichales and Ulvales and perhaps more widely within Chlorophyta.  相似文献

It is commonly held that differences in gametes of the two sexes (anisogamy) evolved from ancestors whose gametes were similar in size and behavior (isogamy). Underlying many hypotheses explaining anisogamy are assumed relationships between cell size and speed in the ancestral isogamous population. Using the isogamous alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, we explored size–speed distributions in vegetative and gamete cells of 10 cell lines, and clonal data from within two cell lines. We applied an independent speed selection approach to gamete populations of C. reinhardtii, monitoring correlated responses in size following selection for high speed. We demonstrate positive size–speed relationships in clones, cell lines, and artificially selected speed selection lines. We found different size–speed relationships in the two cell types of C. reinhardtii even though they overlap in size, suggesting that cell composition and/or programs of gene expression are capable of altering this relationship, and that the relationship is evolvable. The positive genetic size‐speed correlation means that the division of parent vegetative cells into numerous gametes trades off against not only size, but also speed, a trade‐off that has not received previous attention. Our results support reevaluating the role of speed selection in the evolution of anisogamy.  相似文献

Vacuolaria tropicalis sp. nov. is here described as a new species of Chloromonadophyceae, observed in material collected during the summer of 1968–1969 from an artificial pool behind the greenhouses in the São Paulo Botanical Garden in the city of São Paulo. It is distinguished from the three previously described species of the genus chiefly by cell shape and by colour and localisation of the chromatophores.  相似文献

Nuclear basic proteins (histones) were studied in male and female gametes of the isogamous brown algae, Colpomenia bullosa (Saunders) Yamada and Analipus japonicus (Harvey) Wynne and sperm of the oogamous Cystoseira hakodatensis (Yendo) Fensholt by using SDS‐ and AUT‐PAGE. Four major core histones and several linker histone H1s were detected by electrophoresis. Each of the core histones was identified by amino acid sequence analysis and peptide mapping. Electrophoresis patterns of histones were the same in male and female gametes and quite similar between the two species. The composition of histone H1s in conspicuously condensed sperm nuclei of C. hakodatensis was different from that in isogamous gametes. Electrophoresis after micrococcal nuclease digestion of chromatin in male and female gamete nuclei of C. bullosa and A. japonicus and sperm of C. hakodatensis resulted in regular ladder patterns of DNA fragments (ca. 200 base pair). The chromatin of the brown algal gametes thus has the typical nucleosome structure. These results showed that chromatin condensation in sperm nuclei of C. hakodatensis was associated with a modification of linker histone H1 but not by change of core histones, replacement by other basic proteins, changes of repeating patterns, or disappearance of nucleosomes.  相似文献

There is a clear tendency in nature for males to compete more strongly for fertilizations than females, yet the ultimate reasons for this are still unclear. Many researchers—dating back to Darwin and Bateman—have argued that the difference is ultimately driven by the fact that males (by definition) produce smaller and more numerous gametes than females. However, this view has recently been challenged, and a formal validation of the link between anisogamy and sex roles has been lacking. Here, we develop mathematical models that validate the intuition of Darwin and Bateman, showing that there is a very simple and general reason why unequal gamete numbers result in unequal investment in sexually competitive traits. This asymmetry does not require multiple mating by either sex, and covers traits such as mate searching, where the male bias has been difficult to explain. Furthermore, our models show males and females are predicted to diverge more strongly when the fertilization probability of each female gamete is high. Sex roles thus ultimately trace back to anisogamy and the resulting consequences for the fertilization process.  相似文献

Ulva compressa L. is a heterothallic macroalga considered to be in the early evolutionary stage between isogamy and anisogamy. Two genetic lines of this species, each consisting of gametophytes with opposite mating types, were collected on the coasts of Ehime and Iwate prefectures: MGEC‐1 (mt+) and MGEC‐2 (mt?) from Ehime, and MGEC‐5 (mt+) and MGEC‐6 (mt?) from Iwate. Their relative gamete sizes (i.e., cell volumes) do not correspond to their mating types: MGEC‐6 (19.8 μm3) > MGEC‐1 (18.6 μm3) > MGEC‐5 (17.0 μm3) > MGEC‐2 (10.1 μm3). The pattern of organelle inheritance is an important sexual characteristic in many eukaryotes. We therefore investigated the relationship between gamete size and the inheritance of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA). Polymorphisms between the cpDNA of the two lines were used as markers. We found a 24 bp insertion between psbF and psbL, and the substitution of a StyI site (from C CAAGG to T CAAGG) in the intergenic region between petD and accD. Two interline crosses (MGEC‐1 × MGEC‐6 and MGEC‐2 × MGEC‐5) produced 42 and 38 zygotes, respectively. PCR and PCR–RFLP analyses showed that the cpDNA of the mt+ gametes was consistently inherited in both crosses. The cpDNA is inherited from one parent only, and it depends not on gamete size but on being mt+. The cpDNA was observed during crossing and in the zygotes 6 h after mating. In 6% of the zygotes, the cpDNA derived from the mt? gametes disappeared 3–4 h after mating. Preferential digestion of the cpDNA in the zygote’s mt? gamete may form the basis for uniparental inheritance of cpDNA.  相似文献
