The co‐occurrence of different antagonists on a plant can greatly affect infochemicals with ecological consequences for higher trophic levels. Here we investigated how the presence of a plant pathogen, the powdery mildew Erysiphe cruciferarum, on Brassica rapa affects (1) plant volatiles emitted in response to damage by a specialist herbivore, Pieris brassicae; (2) the attraction of the parasitic wasp Cotesia glomerata and (3) the performance of P. brassicae and C. glomerata. Plant volatiles were significantly induced by herbivory in both healthy and mildew‐infected plants, but were quantitatively 41% lower for mildew‐infected plants compared to healthy plants. Parasitoids strongly preferred Pieris‐infested plants to dually‐infested (Pieris + mildew) plants, and preferred dually infested plants over only mildew‐infected plants. The performance of P. brassicae was unaffected by powdery mildew, but C. glomerata cocoon mass was reduced when parasitized caterpillars developed on mildew‐infected plants. Thus, avoidance of mildew‐infested plants may be adaptive for C. glomerata parasitoids, whereas P. brassicae caterpillars may suffer less parasitism on mildew‐infected plants in nature. From a pest management standpoint, the concurrent presence of multiple plant antagonists can affect the efficiency of specific natural enemies, which may in turn have a negative impact on the regulation of pest populations. 相似文献

1. Changing plant composition in a community can have profound consequences for herbivore and parasitoid population dynamics. To understand such effects, studies are needed that unravel the underlying behavioural decisions determining the responses of parasitoids to complex habitats. 2. The searching behaviour of the parasitoid Diadegma semiclausum was followed in environments with different plant species composition. In the middle of these environments, two Brassica oleracea plants infested by the host Plutella xylostella were placed. The control set-up contained B. oleracea plants only. In the more complex set-ups, B. oleracea plants were interspersed by either Sinapis alba or Hordeum vulgare. 3. Parasitoids did not find the first host-infested plant with the same speed in the different environments. Sinapis alba plants were preferentially searched by parasitoids, resulting in fewer initial host encounters, possibly creating a dynamic enemy-free space for the host on adjacent B. oleracea plants. In set-ups with H. vulgare, also, fewer initial host encounters were found, but in this case plant structure was more likely than infochemicals to interfere with the searching behaviour of parasitoids. 4. On discovering a host-infested plant, parasitoids located the second host-infested plant with equal speed, demonstrating the effect of experience on time allocation. Further encounters with host-infested plants that had already been visited decreased residence times and increased the tendency to leave the environment. 5. Due to the intensive search of S. alba plants, hosts were encountered at lower rates here than in the other set-ups. However, because parasitoids left the set-up with S. alba last, the same number of hosts were encountered as in the other treatments. 6. Plant composition of a community influences the distribution of parasitoid attacks via its effects on arrival and leaving tendencies. Foraging experiences can reduce or increase the importance of enemy-free space for hosts on less attractive plants. 相似文献

1. Bacterial populations associated with fish have previously been documented to be crucial for the production of chemical signals governing the interactions between predator fish and zooplankton prey. 2. In this study, we investigated the roles of fish and mucus‐dwelling bacteria in kairomone production by conducting two sets of experiments related to elimination of bacteria with antibiotics and using fish mucus in bioassays of Daphnia pulex’s diel vertical migration. 3. Daphnia’s migratory response to the antibiotic‐treated fish was about half the strength of the response to the fish cue treatment. Furthermore, when the same antibiotic‐treated fish were removed from the antibiotic‐containing water and transferred into control water for 24 and 48 h, the extent of D. pulex’s migration depended on the length of the incubation period, apparently corresponding to the regeneration of bacterial colonies associated with mucus. The migration pattern observed in the 24 h treatment was similar to that of antibiotic‐treated fish. On the other hand, a pronounced migration occurred in the 48 h following antibiotic treatment; here, we found a higher density of fish surface dwelling bacteria than at the start of the experiment. 4. In the experiment involving fish mucus, the mucus‐enriched control water induced a weak response similar to antibiotic‐treated fish. 5. On the basis of the results from the two experiments, we suggest that both fish and fish mucus‐dwelling bacteria interact in the release of kairomone in ecologically relevant quantities. 相似文献

The olfactory responses of male and female Macrolophus caliginosus Wagner (Heteroptera: Miridae) adults towards volatiles from green bean plants previously exposed to feeding by conspecifics and to direct odours from conspecifics were tested in a Y-tube olfactometer. Female M. caliginosus did not respond to volatiles from plants exposed to mirid feeding or to odours emitted directly by adult mirids. In contrast, male mirid bugs were attracted both to volatiles from plants previously exposed to feeding by conspecific females and to odours emitted by conspecifics only with a marginally significant preference for the former. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis showed that mirid feeding induced the release of 11 additional compounds as compared to the volatiles emitted from clean plants. Three of these substances (5-ethyl-2(5H)-furanone, Z-3-hexenyl tiglate, and E,E-α-farnesene) were released only after feeding by females. Furthermore, 21 compounds were identified in volatiles emitted directly by mirids, 12 of which were unique to the mirids (i.e., not present in clean plants or plants previously exposed to mirid feeding). The results suggest that female-specific herbivore-induced plant volatiles play a role as mate-finding cues by the male mirids. The ecological implications of the findings are discussed, and the term ‘sexual synomone’ is introduced. 相似文献

Chemicals produced by aquatic organisms, and especially micro-organisms, have received increasing attention in the last decade for their role in shaping interactions and communities. Several cases emphasize the fact that chemical signals or defence may modulate interspecific interactions. Notably, it has been shown that diatoms, unicellular algae and key primary producers in aquatic ecosystems produce a wide range of bioactive metabolites. Among these compounds, polyunsaturated short-chain aldehydes in vitro strongly impair the reproduction of various potential grazers. In the field, the relationship between aldehyde production and reproductive failure in copepods remains unclear. Recent studies have suggested that these putative defence compounds may also be involved in intercellular communication and in interactions with competitors. Potential effects of the aldehyde precursors on various organisms have also been described. This review presents an overview of various results obtained in the last decade that could help us to understand the role of polyunsaturated aldehydes and their precursors in the ecology of diatoms. It is focused on the dichotomy between freshwater and marine environments. Indeed, most of the results on anti-proliferative aldehydes concern marine planktonic diatoms, whereas they are also known to be produced by benthic and freshwater species. 相似文献

We examined the ability of the amphipod Gammarus pulexto detect chemical cues released from potential food sources. Therefore, response of G. pulex to chemical cues from food was tested in paired-choice laboratory experiments. Comparisons were made between artificial and natural leaves, with and without the importance of aufwuchs, and with different components of the aufwuchs community. Our study demonstrated that G. pulex actively chose its food and that G. pulex is most strongly attracted to the aufwuchs on discs rather than to the leaf itself. Fungi and bacteria are more important in the food selection process than algae probably because fungal and bacterial cues are more specific cues for decaying leaves than algal cues, since algae also grow on mineral substrates and then do not contribute to leaf decomposition. 相似文献

Abstract Egg parasitoids have a short time frame in which their host eggs are suitable for parasitism, and in several systems these parasitoids respond to plant volatiles induced by oviposition on the plant (either in isolation or in combination with feeding damage) as a means of finding suitable hosts. It is known that the parasitoid of pentatomid eggs Telenomus podisi responds to damage done to soybeans by female Euschistus heros, its preferred host. In this study our aim was to determine the type of E. heros damage to soybean (herbivory, oviposition or a combination of both) necessary for attraction of T. podisi. In a Y-tube olfactometer the parasitoid has shown to respond to the undamaged plant over clean air and herbivory-damaged plants over undamaged plants. However, the parasitoids did not respond to the treatments where oviposition occurred, either in isolation or in combination with herbivory. Analysis of volatile blends revealed that herbivory plus oviposition damage to soybean induced a volatile blend different to those induced when herbivory or oviposition occurred separately. These results, along with other results from this system, suggest that T. podisi uses plant volatile cues associated with female E. heros damage in order to be present when E. heros lays its eggs, and thus ensure its resource is optimal for parasitism. 相似文献

Aleochara bilineata Gyll. (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) adults feed on eggs and larvae of cabbage maggot, Delia radicum (L.) (Diptera: Anthomyiidae), and might be used to control this pest. We undertook tests in a Y-tube olfactometer to determine if infochemicals are involved in the food foraging behaviour of A. bilineata adults and to precisely determine the potential sources of stimuli. A. bilineata adults oriented toward the stimuli from both the food-plant of the prey (rutabaga: Brassica napus var. napobrassica (L.) Reichb.) and the prey-plant complex (rutabaga infested by cabbage maggot larvae), but adults significantly preferred the effluvia of infested to uninfested rutabaga in a choice test. The sources of infochemicals in the infested rutabaga were the cabbage maggot larvae themselves and their frass. However, in a choice test adults preferred the effluvia of the larvae to that of the damaged rutabaga from which those larvae were obtained. It is not expected that a generalist predator uses precise herbivore-derived signals in food foraging activity, but the preference of A. bilineata adults for the larval volatiles over frass volatiles may reflect the dependence of this species on dipteran pupae for reproduction. 相似文献

Allelopathic effect of the aquatic macrophyte, Stratiotes aloides, on natural phytoplankton 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
1. A survey of different Dutch Stratiotes stands showed that the density of phytoplankton (except cyanobacteria) was always higher outside S. aloides than between the rosettes of S. aloides. Analyses of water samples revealed that nutrient limitation was unlikely to have caused the lower phytoplankton biomass in the vicinity of S. aloides. 2. An in situ incubation experiment in the Danube Delta, Romania, indicated allelopathic activity against phytoplankton in S. aloides stands. The growth rate of natural phytoplankton populations exposed to water from S. aloides stands was significantly lower than that of populations that had not been in contact with S. aloides exudates. 3. A laboratory microcosm experiment showed a significantly lower phytoplankton biomass in treatments with S. aloides exudates. Nutrient concentrations and the light intensity were high enough that the lower phytoplankton biomass could not be explained by nutrient or light limitation. 相似文献
