The syntypes ofBromus madritensis var.delilei Boiss. comprise two different elements: specimens ofB. haussknechtii Boiss. and ofB. fasciculatus C. Presl s.l. By its lectotypification and on the basis of new morphological characters, the validation ofB. fasciculatus subsp.delilei (Boiss.)H. Scholz 1971 was substantiated. This subspecies represents the eastern marginal segregate of the south-Mediterranean species.B. fasciculatus var.alexandrinus Thell. is a minor variant of the typical subspecies.Dedicated to Prof.K. H. Rechinger on the occasion of his 80th birthday.

HUSAIN, S. Z., MARIN, P. D., ŠILIĆ, Č., QAISER, M. & PETCOVIĆ, B., 1990. A micromorphological study of some representative genera in the tribe Saturejeae (Lamiaceae). The Old World genera in the tribe Saturejeae are usually distributed either in Europe and North Africa or in the temperate parts of Asia. The centres of distribution of investigated genera are mainly in the Mediterranean region. In taxonomic revisions very little reference is made to micromorphological characters, in particular, to nutlets and leaf indumentum, in spite of the stability of these characters. Scanning electron microscopy of nutlet surface and patterns of leaf indumentum show a wide range of variation, not only among genera, but also at lower levels of classification. In view of this, nutlet surface and leaf indumentum structure, as seen with the SEM, of representative species of eight genera in the tribe Saturejeae provides useful additional character combinations in delimiting these closely related genera. This study also supports Boissier's delimitation of sections Micromeria and Pseudomelissa.

The usefulness of features of leaf hairs in distinguishing subgenera and sections is well documented in bothRhododendron andSolanum. In this analysis of the taxa ofSolanum sect.Basarthrum (23 species), and of a sample of closely related taxa from sect.Petota (22 species), it is shown that such features serve to delineate subsectional groups such as series and some species as well. SectionBasarthrum has an unexpected diversity of hair types. Although this group has been characterized by 2-celled bayonet hairs, more than one half of the taxa in the section bear multicellular finger hairs, and 3 species also possess branched hairs. Thus, major rearrangements of the species previously assigned to sect.Basarthrum are indicated or supported by pubescence features. The taxa studied from seriesEtuberosa andJuglandifolia (both of sect.Petota) show hair types that a) are relatively primitive for the section, and b) show linkage between sects.Petota andBasarthrum.

Biseriate glandular trichomes and uniseriate flagellar covering hairs occur in all or most of the 20 genera examined and thus do not provide important taxonomical hints. In contrast, T- or Y-shaped hairs have been found inSantolina, Anthemis, Leucanthemopsis, Dendranthema, Tanacetum,Balsamita, Sphaeromeria (?),Artemisia, andAchillea clavenae only. Stellate hairs appear to be rare (inSantolina andArtemisia sect.Dracunculus). For details, additional hair types, and relationships see Tab.1 and Fig. 6.

Species of Ficus subsection Urostigma show much overlapping variation in vegetative morphology, which often precludes correct identification of the species. The aim of this study was to describe the leaf anatomical characters and their variation and to check their suitability for identification. Included were 41 samples belonging to 25 species of subsection Urostigma, four samples belonging to two species of section Leucogyne and one specimen of Ficus glaberrima subsp. siamensis of subsection Conosycea. Transverse sections of lamina, midrib and petiole and cuticular macerations were used, and the observed anatomical characters are described for each species. On the basis of a limited number of studied samples, leaf anatomy shows little variation within each species and each species has a unique combination of character states, facilitating identification. Ficus arnottiana shows some leaf anatomical characters that are quite different from those of other members of subsection Urostigma, including a multiple epidermis and enlarged lithocysts on both sides of the leaf. Both characters are generally considered as typical for Ficus subsection Conosycea. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 175 , 259–281.

A new species of Veronica vadiniense in section Veronica is described from material from the Cantabrian Range, in the north-east of the province of León (north-west Spain). Several morphological characters related to stems, leaves, racemes, flowers and capsules are given, and also those related to the indumentum of different parts of the plant, especially calyx lobes and capsule. Indications about distribution and habitat with reference to bioclimatic, biogeographical and phytosociological aspects are provided. Diagnostic features are also given to enable comparison with the most similar species, Veronica officinalis and V. allionii , particularly in the indumentum and consistency of leaves, and in the indumentum and shape of the capsule.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 141 , 119–124.

Variation in foliar trichomes in Croton (Euphorbiaceae) is reviewed, and the terminology clarified by redefinitions and illustrations of terms. Evolution of trichome types appears to proceed from branched (stellate or fasciculate) hairs to simple and dendritic ones. A systematic enumeration characterizes the trichome morphology in 36 of the 40 sections, with citation of the 120 species examined.

Following examination by scanning electron and light microscope of the fruit features of 12 species of Veronica from south-west Spain, morphological and anatomical studies revealed that these taxa can be differentiated on the basis of these features. Phenetic analysis with 28 characters additionally revealed several groups of species in Veronica to be closely related on the basis of their seed morphology. A key distinguishing the different taxa is provided. Finally, dehiscence mechanisms are briefly discussed.

The taxonomic value and evolutionary significance of 30 leaf epidermal characters from 238 samples representing 127 species of all seven genera in the tribe Gaultherieae (Ericaceae) and two outgroup genera were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. The character states were coded and optimized onto a maximum‐likelihood tree based on previous molecular data with Fitch parsimony and hierarchical Bayesian analysis to trace the evolution of character states throughout all internodes in the phylogenetic tree for Gaultherieae. Leaf epidermal characters were found to be largely consistent within species, but highly variable at interspecific and higher taxonomic levels. The most recent common ancestral states of 15 characters diagnosed various lineages recovered from prior studies, some with no prior morphological support. Relatively high frequencies of state change occur in the eastern Asian clade Gaultheria series Gymnobotrys + Diplycosia, the American clade G. subsection Dasyphyta p.p., the core East Asian clade and the Australia/New Zealand clade. The characters with the highest frequencies of state change are the outer stomatal ledge ornamentation type, the stomatal apparatus level, stomatal density and area, and the type of abaxial trichomes. These character state change patterns may provide insight into the ecological adaptions of Gaultherieae during their evolutionary history. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 178 , 686–710.
