The data widely purporting to show the existence and heterosexual transmission in Africa of a new syndrome caused by a retrovirus which induces immune deficiency are critically evaluated. It is concluded that both acquired immune deficiency (AID) and the symptoms and diseases which constitute the clinical syndrome (S) are of long standing in Africa, affect both sexes equally and are caused directly and indirectly by factors other than human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Seropositivity to HIV in Africans usually represents no more than cross-reactivity caused by an abundance of antibodies induced by the numerous infectious and parasitic diseases which are endemic in Africa. The apparently high prevalence of AIDS and HIV seropositives is therefore not surprising and is not proof of heterosexual transmission of either HIV or AIDS.E. Female-male interaction of heterosexual pairs of stumptail macaques, housed together continuously, was studied 24 hr per day using closed-circuit video recording. Two pairs were studied for approximately 2 months each. Although no generalizations can be made from such a small sample, no aspect of behavioral interaction varied significantly with the stage of the menstrual cycle of the female partner. Copulation occurred regularly but only during the daylight hours. Both pairs showed several peak ejaculation days (5–21 ejaculations/day), which were distributed throughout the entire menstrual cycle. In general, the highest number of ejaculations was observed to occur when the animals were put together either for the first time or following a separation of a few days. In one pair the female became pregnant, and from the fifth week of pregnancy onward there was a gradual increase in male aggression, coinciding with a decrease in male sexual and grooming behavior. In a second study eight different pairs were observed during the first day together and male copulatory behavior was studied. Two patterns of copulatory behavior could be discerned: pairs displaying a high number of ejaculations (19–38) and pairs displaying a low number of ejaculations (4–8). With regard to the interejaculatory interval (IEI), the male stumptail appeared to be unique. In contrast to what has been reported for other mammals, i.e., a steady increase in IEI with subsequent ejaculations, the stumptail showed increasing IEIs only during the first three to four, as well as between the last, ejaculations; in between, the IEI remained relatively constant. The maximum number of consecutive ejaculations observed was 38, displayed during a 10-hr time period (mean (± SEM)IEI, 12.9 ± 3.5 min).  相似文献

The phenomenon of chimaerism occurs in the majority of cattle twin pregnancies. The objectives of this study were to develop a powerful diagnostic test for chimaerism in bovine male and female co‐twins using X and Y chromosome‐linked markers and to determine the extent of chimaerism in twins, triplets and quadruplets. We developed a multiplex PCR set of three polymorphic markers on chromosome X (DIK2865, DIK2283, AGLA257), where the presence of >1 and >2 alleles per marker is sufficient to prove chimaerism in males and females, respectively. In addition, a specific segment on chromosome Y (BOV97M) is included in the set to indicate chimaerism in females. Visualization of chimaeric alleles was best for DNA extracted from blood, fair for DNA from vaginal smears and failed for DNA extracted from hair. The power of chimaerism identification using this set of markers for DNA extracted from blood was calculated as 99% in males and virtually 100% in females. All females and males in heterosexual twins, triplets and quadruplets displayed evidence of a chimaeric allele in at least one and maximum of three of three X chromosome markers analysed. In addition, all females showed the presence of the BOV97M segment and were validated as chimaeric by the standard clinical diagnosis of impaired vaginal length. Quantitative PCR analysis of BOV97M copies in all twins vs. their sires showed a mean ratio of 45–68% in females and 39–49% in males, indicating a substantial symmetrical exchange of cells among all co‐twins. The proposed analysis of X and Y chromosome‐linked markers is advantageous to previous methods based on Y chromosome sequences only, because it detects chimaerism in both male and female co‐twins.  相似文献

Three SIVMne-infected female pigtailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) were mated with two SIV-negative males. The females exhibited signs of SAIDS and SIVMne was readily isolated from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Both males became infected with SIVMne, developed SAIDS, and died. This is the first documented case of the transmission of SIVMne between adult macaques housed together. Although transmission through scratching or biting cannot be ruled out, heterosexual transmission appears the most likely mode of SIVMne transmission in this study.  相似文献

Heterosexual and homosexual chemoattraction studies were done with 8- to 12-week-old Schistosoma mansoni adults in linear chambers containing Earle's saline, in the absence and presence of both perforated and unperforated dialysis sac chimney barriers. In the absence of barriers attraction was seen in all heterosexual and homosexual combinations. After 90 min of observation at 37 C, organisms maintained at 4 or 37 C for at least 1 hr prior to the assay showed heterosexual attraction similar to those used immediately after perfusion. There was significantly more heterosexual attraction between worms from same than different pairs. In the presence of perforated barriers the greatest attraction was heterosexual, with males moving toward females; heterosexual attraction with females moving toward males was approximately equal to homosexual female attraction, and male homosexual attraction was not seen. In the presence of unperforated barriers the greatest attraction of females toward males occurred during the first 0.5 hr; within 3 to 4 hr females were no longer significantly attracted to males. However, after 0.5 hr males were more significantly attracted to females in unperforated than perforated chimneys. These studies demonstrate that adult schistosomes attract each other in vitro, and that there is a chemical basis for this attraction.  相似文献
