Primates possess the remarkable ability to differentiate faces of group members and to extract relevant information about the individual directly from the face. Recognition of conspecific faces is achieved by means of holistic processing, i.e. the processing of the face as an unparsed, perceptual whole, rather than as the collection of independent features (part-based processing). The most striking example of holistic processing is the Thatcher illusion. Local changes in facial features are hardly noticeable when the whole face is inverted (rotated 180°), but strikingly grotesque when the face is upright. This effect can be explained by a lack of processing capabilities for locally rotated facial features when the face is turned upside down. Recently, a Thatcher illusion was described in the macaque monkey analogous to that known from human investigations. Using a habituation paradigm combined with eye tracking, we address the critical follow-up questions raised in the aforementioned study to show the Thatcher illusion as a function of the observer''s species (humans and macaques), the stimulus'' species (humans and macaques) and the level of perceptual expertise (novice, expert). 相似文献
1. 1.The sensations evoked by pairs of distinct thermal stimuli applied to the back of the hand were studied in 17 volunteer subjects. Four stimulus combinations were used; neutral-cold (NC), neutral-neutral (NN), neutral-warm (NW), and cold-warm (CW).
2. 2.The subjects were first asked to estimate the magnitude of the thermal sensations evoked by the thermal stimuli. On average, the four pairs were reported as increasing magnitude in the following order: NC, CW, NN, and NW, seeming to suggest that the subjects experienced the cold-warm combination as a composite sensation of cold and warmth intermediate between pure cold and pure warmth.
3. 3.When asked only to detect the presence of a cold stimulus, the subjects performed as well for the CW combination as for the CN combination. This second result indicates that the reported composite magnitude of CW does not result from a true opponency of cold and warmth but from a cognitive combination of distinct sensations of cold and warmth.

Summary Taste discs were dissected from the tongue ofR. ridibunda and their cells dissociated by a collagenase/low Ca/mechanical agitation protocol. The resulting cell suspension contained globular epithelial cells and, in smaller number, taste receptor cells. These were identified by staining properties and by their preserved apical process, the tip of which often remained attached to an epithelial (associated) cell. When the patch pipette contained 110mm KCl and the cells were superfused with NaCl Ringer's during whole-cell recording, the mean zero-current potential of 22 taste receptor cells was –65.2 mV and the slope resistance 150 to 750 M. Pulse-depolarization from a holding voltage of –80 mV activated a transient TTX-blockable inward Na current. Activation became noticeable at –25 mV and was half-maximal at –8 mV. Steady-state inactivation was half-maximal at –67 mV and complete at –50 mV. Peak Na current averaged –0.5 nA/cell. The Ca-ionophore A23187 shifted the activation and inactivation curve to more negative voltages. Similar shifts occurred when the pipette Ca was raised. External Ni (5mm) shifted the activation curve towards positive voltages by 10 mV. Pulse depolarization also activated outward K currents. Activation was slower than that of Na current and inactivation slower still. External TEA (7.5mm) and 4-aminopyridine (1mm) did not block, but 5mm Ba blocked the K currents. K-tail currents were seen on termination of depolarizing voltage pulses. A23187 shifted theIK(V)-curve to more negative voltages. Action potentials were recorded when passing pulses of depolarizing outward current. Of the frog gustatory stimulants, 10mm Ca caused a reversible 5-to 10-mV depolarization in the current-clamp mode. Quinine (0.1mm, bitter) produced a reversible depolarization accompanied by a full block of Na current and, with slower time-course, a partial block of K currents. Cyclic AMP (5mm in the external solution or 0.5 m in the pipette) caused reversible depolarization (to –40 to –20 mV) due to partial blockage of K currents, but only if ATP was added to the pipette solution. Similar responses were elicited by stimulating the adenylate cyclase with forskolin. Blockage of cAMP-phosphodiesterase enhanced the response to cAMP. These results suggest that cAMP may be one of the cytosolic messengers in taste receptor cells. Replacement of ATP by AMP-PNP in the pipette abolished the depolarizing response to cAMP. Inclusion of ATP--S in the pipette caused slow depolarization to –40 to –20 mV, due to partial blockage of K currents. Subsequently, cAMP was without effect. The remaining K currents were blockable by Ba. These results suggest that cAMP initiates phosphorylation of one set of K channels to a nonconducting conformation. 相似文献
Summary Tongue-projecting plethodontid salamanders have massive direct ipsilateral retinal afferents to the tectum opticum as well as a large and well developed nucleus isthmi. Retrograde staining revealed two subnuclei: A ventral one projecting to the contralateral tectal hemisphere and a dorsal one projecting back to the ipsilateral side. The isthmic nuclei show a retinotopic organization, which is in register with that of the tectum. Electrophysiological recordings from nucleus-isthmi neurons revealed response properties that are very similar to those found in tectal neurons. Thus, there is no substantial processing of tectal neural activity in the nucleus isthmi. Measurements of peak latencies after electrical and light stimulation suggest the continuous coexistence of 4 representations of the visual field in the tectum mediated by (1) the contralateral and (2) the ipsilateral direct retinal afferents, (3) the uncrossed and (4) the crossed isthmo-tectal projection. (1) and (2) originate at the same moment in the retina and arrive simultaneously in the tectum. It is assumed that in plethodontid salamanders with massive ipsilateral retino-tectal projections depth perception based on disparity cues is achieved by comparison of these images.Representations mediated by (3) and (4) arriving in the tectum at the same time as (1) and (2) originate 10–30 ms earlier in the retina. It is hypothesized that these time differences between (1)/(2) and (3)/(4) are used to calculate three-dimensional trajectories of fast-moving prey objects.Abbreviations

Research on visual blight has been predominantly qualitative and has pointed out salient attributes of blight: that it is durable, visually demeaning, and somehow aesthetically depressing. Data from a national sample (n=3005) are used in this study to measure the effect of demographic variation on the perception of visual blight. The perception of blight shows marked and regular variation with socioeconomic status, marital status, and religiosity.Harris data for this study was purchased with funds from the Shell Foundation. The gustatory sensitivity of the herbivorous fish Tilapia zillii was investigated using electrophysiological techniques. Integrated responses from facial taste nerves were recorded during stimulation by l l amino acids. All compounds proved to be effective stimuli. The relative stimulatory efficacy (RSE) determined at 1 × 10 −3 m indicated that stimuli can be organized into three groups on the basis of similarity of efficacy. Effects of pH which altered the RSE of some amino acids are documented. Amino acid RSE differed to some extent from those of previously studied carnivorous fish. There was concordance between the composition of preferred food, effective feeding stimuli and the peripheral receptor responses. These observations support the hypothesis that peripheral chemosensitivity might serve as a mechanism of feeding specialization in some fish. 相似文献
The kinetics of gravitropism and of amyloplast sedimentation were studied in dark-grown protonemata of the moss Ceratodon purpureus (Hedw.) Brid. The protonemata grew straight up at a rate of 20–25 m·h– in nutrient-supplemented agar. After they were oriented to the horizontal, upward curvature was first detected after 1–1.5 h and reached 84° by 24 h. The tip cells exhibited an amyloplast zonation, with a tip cluster of nonsedimenting amyloplasts, an amyloplast-free zone, and a zone with pronounced amyloplast sedimentation. This latter zone appears specialized more for lateral than for axial sedimentation since amyloplasts sediment to the lower wall in horizontal protonemata but do not fall to the basal wall in vertical protonemata. Amyloplast sedimentation started within 15 min of gravistimulation; this is within the 12–17-min presentation time. The data support the hypothesis that some amyloplasts function as statoliths in these cells. This work was supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration grant NAGW-780. Plasma membrane flavins and pterins are considered to mediate important physiological functions such as blue light photoperception and redox activity. Therefore, the presence of flavins and pterins in the plasma membrane of higher plants was studied together with NAD(P)H-dependent redox activities. Plasma membranes were isolated from the apical hooks of etiolated bean seedlings (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Limburgse Vroege) by aqueous two-phase partitioning. Fluorescence spectroscopy revealed the presence of two chromophores. The first showed excitation maxima at 370 and 460 nm and an emission peak at 520 nm and was identified as a flavin. The second chromophore was probably a pterin molecule with excitation peaks at 290 and 350 nm and emission at 440 nm. Both pigments are considered intrinsic to the plasma membrane since they could not be removed by treatment with hypotonic media containing high salt and low detergent concentrations. The flavin concentration was estimated at about 500 pmol mg?1 protein. However difficulties were encountered in quantifying the pterin concentrations. Protease treatments indicated that the flavins were non-covalently bound to the proteins. Separation of the plasma membrane proteins after solubilisation by octylglucoside, on an ion exchange system (HPLC, Mono Q), resulted in a distinct protein fraction showing flavin and pterin fluorescence and NADH oxidoreductase activity. The flavin of this fraction was identified as flavin mononucleotide (FMN) by HPLC analysis. Other minor peaks of NADH:acceptor reductase activity were resolved on the column. The presence of distinct NAD(P)H oxidases at the plasma membrane was supported by nucleotide specificity and latency studies using intact vesicles. Our work demonstrates the presence of plasma membrane flavins as intrinsic chromophores, that may function in NAD(P)H-oxidoreductase activity and suggests the presence of plasma membrane bound pterins. 相似文献
