Desangeloylshairidin,X-ray structure determination of a sesquiterpene lactone from Guillonea scabra

The structure and absolute configuration of desangeloylshairidin, a guaianolide isolated from Guillonea scabra, have been established by X-ray diffraction analysis. No conformational change was observed in its seven-membered ring between the crystal and deuterochloroform solution states.     

Effects of Guaianolide derivative I on fibre initiation and elongation in Gossypium arboreum L. in relation to adverse effects of cool temperature

Cotton ovules collected during late September with prevalent night cool temperature (15°C), cultured at 30°C/15°C i.e. cycling temperatures in Beasley and Ting medium had very few epidermal cells showing bulging. Supplementing cultures with guaianolide derivative I (E-13 methyldehydrocostus lactone) promoted fibre initiation. At—1 day preanthesis (DPA), IAA oxidase activity declined in guaianolide-treated cultures but increased during the elongation phase and was enhanced during the secondary wall thickening phase. However, o-diphenol oxidase activity was adversely affected during the fibre initiation phase. The activities of all the other enzymes studied viz. acid invertase, phenylalanine ammonia lyase, -glucosidase and IAA oxidase increased, except -galactosidase, during the later phase in comparison with the controls. The present study indicates that guaianolide derivative I triggers early initiation and promotes fibre elongation by regulatin o-diphenols and IAA-oxidation levels, which in turn check wall loosening. Considerable enhancement in the soluble acid invertase activity by this compound suggests its role in apoplastic sucrose hydrolysis, thereby preventing its accumulation.Abbreviations DPA days pre anthesis - DAC days after culturing - DAA days after anthesis     

A guaian-5,12-olide from Hypochoeris cretensis

Hypochoeris cretensis afforded, in addition to triterpenes and isoalantolactone, a new guaian-5, 12-olide and the corresponding precursor.     

Angeloylcumambrin-B,an antimicrobial sesquiterpene lactone from Chrysanthemum ornatum var. Spontaneum

Angeloylcumambrin-B, a new antimicrobial guaianolide sesquiterpene lactone, was isolated from Chrysanthemum ornatum and the structure was determined by a combination of chemical and physical methods.     

Three germacranolides and other constituents from Eremanthus species

The re-investigation of Eremanthus glomerulatus afforded three new germacranolides and a guaianolide, while from E. mollis two known furanoheliangolides and a new phenylpropanol derivative were isolated. The germacranolides most probably are precursors of the widespread glaucolides. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods. The chemotaxonomic situation is discussed briefly.     

8,6-Hydroxy dehydrozaluzanin C from Andryala pinnatifida

The roots of Andryala pinnatifida afforded 8β-hydroxy dehydrozaluzanin C.     

Achillinin A,a Cytotoxic Guaianolide from the Flower of Yarrow,Achillea millefolium

Achillinin A (2β,3β-epoxy-1α,4β,10α-trihydroxyguai-11(13)-en-12,6α-olide, 1), a new guaianolide isolated from the flower of Achillea millefolium, exhibited potential antiproliferative activity to A549, RERF-LC-kj and QG-90 cells with 50% inhibitory concentration (IC₅₀) values of 5.8, 10 and 0.31 μM, respectively.     

Some sesqui- and diterpenes from the tribe eupatorieae

The aerial parts of Trichogonia salviaefolia afforded a new ent-kaurenic acid derivative and a germacranolide which, most likely, is the precursor of the trichosalviolides. The aerial parts of Liatris spicata gave 1α-hydroxybacchotricuneatin A and a guaianolide, which may be the precursor of spicatin. From Brickellia vernicosa some further dehydronerolidol derivatives were isolated.     

Integrifolin,a guaianolide from Andryala integrifolia

Integrifolin, the major constituent of Andryala integrifolia, has been isolated and characterized as 3β,8β-dihydroxy-4(15),10(14),11(13)-trien-(1αH), (5αH) guaian-6,12-olide (8-epi-desacylcynaropicrin).
