A total of 447 primary root-caries lesions from 169 dental patients was studied to determine the relationships between mutans streptococci and the perceived treatment need of primary root-caries lesions. Samples of this altered dentine for microbiological culture were obtained. Lesions were classified into 5 treatment categories; soft and restore, leathery and restore, leathery and debride of caries, leathery and treat chemotherapeutically, and hard, to receive no treatment. The total numbers of mutans streptococci decreased significantly with decreased treatment need. The percentage of mutans streptococci from lesions requiring no treatment was significantly less than from lesions requiring treatment. The frequency of isolation of mutans streptococci was significantly greater from lesions requiring more treatment. Significantly more lesions containing > 102 mutans streptococci were distributed in the groups with a greater perceived treatment need or with larger dimensions occlusogingivally and/or mesio-distally or bucco-lingually or with a closer proximity to the gingival margin. 相似文献

Objectives . To evaluate the attitudes to retaining natural teeth in an adult Swedish population, and to correlate the attitude to retaining natural teeth with some presumed influencing background factors. Design : Cross-sectional study using a newly developed questionnaire. Subjects : From the national census register of four municipalities in the southern part of the province of Halland, Sweden, with a total population of 126,878 adult (≥20 years) inhabitants, 4,200 persons were selected at random. The sample was randomised by age and sex, and 300 men and 300 women from the age groups 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 years were included. Intervention and main outcome measures : The questionnaire aimed to evaluate the number of remaining natural teeth, the dental care habits, the self-estimated quality of natural teeth, and the attitude t o retaining natural teeth In the studied population, and also to evaluate the possible correlation between those factors, in particular, the attitude to retaining natural teeth versus the other factors. Results : It was found that the attitude to the importance of retaining natural teeth was strongly correlated with the number of remaining natural teeth, the dental care habits, and the self-estimated quality of natural teeth. Also sex had an influence on this attitude but not age. Conclusions : The attitude to the importance of retaining natural teeth in an adult Swedish population is correlated with the number of remaining natural teeth, the dental care habits, the self-estimated quality of natural teeth, and sex, but not with age. 相似文献

doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2010.00473.x Influence of artificial accelerated ageing on the colour stability of paints used for ocular prosthesis iris painting Objectives: To evaluate the colour stability of paints used for ocular prosthesis iris painting submitted for accelerated artificial ageing (AAA). Materials and methods: Forty specimens of acrylic resin for sclera (16 × 2 mm) were made and separated into eight groups (n = 10) according to the type of paint (gouache, GP; oil, OP; acrylic AP; and composite resin for characterisation, CR) and the colours used (blue/brown). After drying (72 h), a new layer of colourless acrylic resin was applied and the initial colour readout was performed (Spectrophotometer PCB 6807). New colour readouts were performed after AAA, and ΔE was calculated. Results: Statistical analysis (two‐way anova –Bonferroni, p < 0.05) demonstrated that the brown colour showed lower ΔE means in comparison with the blue colour, with statistically significant difference for AP only. Blue colour showed no statistically significant difference with regard to the type of paint used. Brown AP showed lower ΔE than the other groups, with significant difference for OP and GP. GP showed greater alteration in ΔE for the brown colour, being statistically similar only to OP. Conclusions: Only the AP group for brown pigment shows clinically acceptable values for colour stability after AAA. 相似文献

If quality of care for elderly patients is to be achieved, thorough and realistic geroprosthodontic treatment planning is essential. This requires mature consideration, incorporating comprehensive patient assessment and selection of the most appropriate treatment option for each patient. The latter should be based on criteria which meet the demands of a healthy dentition and which enable a patient to achieve satisfactory oral function. The Nijmegen and Manchester Dental Schools have evolved simple patient-related treatment guidelines. These start with a problem-oriented approach which leads to a provisional treatment. The provisional treatment is intended to result in a healthy dentition that is monitored over an appropriate period. Evaluation of the provisional treatment leads to three options: extension of the monitoring time, preservation of the natural occlusion or loss of the natural occlusion. Definitive prosthodontic treatment plans are based on the second or third option. In the maintenance of good oral health after prosthodontic treatments, plaque and diet control are essential elements. Recall or maintenance programmes must be carried out if successful treatment is to be achieved and maintained. 相似文献

Gerodontology 2011; doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2009.00360.x Factors associated with the oral health‐related quality of life in elderly persons in dental clinic: validation of a Mandarin Chinese version of GOHAI Objectives: To translate the original English version of Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) into Mandarin Chinese and assess its reliability and validity for use among the elderly in inland China and to explore the factors associated with oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL). Methods: The original English version of GOHAI was translated, back‐translated and cross‐culturally adapted. The psychometric properties of GOHAI‐M were assessed in a sample of 263 people aged 60 years and over and OHRQoL was examined in 221 subjects using GOHAI‐M. Multiple regression analysis was conducted. Results: Internal consistency of the GOHAI‐M was excellent (Cronbach’s α : 0.81). Split‐half reliability coefficient was 0.80, and item‐scale correlation coefficient ranged from 0.25 to 0.71. Self‐rated oral health was significantly associated with OHRQoL (rs = 0.505, p < 0.01). The relation coefficient between GOHAI‐M and self‐perceived need for dental treatment and number of missing teeth were 0.231 and ?0.653, respectively (p < 0.05). Multiple regression analysis found that better OHRQoL was significantly associated with better self‐ratings of oral health (β = 0.497, p = 0.01), number of missing teeth (β = 0.187, p < 0.01) and life satisfaction (β = 0.132, p < 0.05). Conclusion: The Mandarin Chinese version of GOHAI demonstrates acceptable reliability and validity. OHRQoL is associated with self‐rated oral health, number of missing teeth and satisfaction with life. 相似文献

doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2011.00621.x Unnoticed swallowing of a unilateral removable partial denture Objective: This paper presents a case report about an unnoticed swallowing of a partial denture impacted in the esophagus in a 74‐year old man without serious complications. Background data: Dental prostheses (removable/fixed dental prostheses or fragments of dentures) appear to constitute a significant proportion of swallowed of impacted foreign bodies in the orolaryngopharynx. Conclusion: This case emphazises that is advisable to contraindicate this type of unilateral removable partial denture to replace teeth as temporary or definitive dental prosthesis. 相似文献

doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2012.00652.x Oral healthcare issues in rural residential aged care services in Victoria, Australia Objectives: To identify major issues in providing and accessing oral health care in Victorian rural residential aged care services from the perspectives of dentists, aged care staff and residents. Methods: Structured interviews were conducted with five dentists, nine aged care staff and six residents. Three focus groups were conducted with aged care staff. These data were thematically analysed independently by two researchers. Results: The challenges reported by dentists included complexity of care, infrastructure needs and need for skill development. Aged care staff reported lack of skills and confidence in providing oral hygiene care, especially in residents with natural teeth, and an increasing burden on their daily workload. Residents reported concern and shame regarding their declining oral health status and increased challenges accessing appropriate oral health care. Conclusion: These findings indicate the need to build and sustain aged care ‘oral health teams’ who are able to provide daily oral hygiene care for residents and mentor other staff. Rural dentists need access to gerodontic training, portable equipment and appropriate workspaces in aged care services. Aged care and oral health services need to establish clear referral and communication pathways. 相似文献
