Changes in ambient temperature and solar radiation may affect sloths' metabolic rate and body temperature, with consequent changes in activities, postures and microhabitat selection. Although the separate effect of temperature and solar radiation on sloth's behaviour have been previously studied, the combined effect of these climatic factors on behavioural aspects of sloths has never been systematically evaluated in field conditions. Here we evaluated the influence of hourly ambient temperature variation on maned sloth (Bradypus torquatus) activities, postures and tree crown positions, under sunny and cloudy conditions; and tested if any of the animal posture and position increase their exposure to human detection. We performed 350 h of visual observation on eight maned sloths, equipped with radio-backpacks, in northern Bahia, Brazil, recording their activities, and their resting postures and positions on tree crowns. We also recorded the time taken to visualize the sloths on 58 days to analyse if sloths' detection is affected by posture and position. Higher ambient temperature, within a range of 21–33°C, increased the sloths' activity levels in cloudy conditions but reduced their activity in sunny conditions. Increasing ambient temperature also reduced the frequency of huddled posture and increased the frequency of extended posture and permanence in the inner tree crown. Lastly, the postures and positions did not influence sloths' detectability. Thus, the direction of the temperature–activity relationship depends on climatic conditions (sunny/cloudy), and individuals rely on resting postures and positions to thermoregulate. The warmer and drier future climate, expected to occur in the northern Atlantic Forest, may impose change in the diurnal activity levels and postural pattern for this threatened species, leading maned sloths to reduce its activity on sunny and warmer days and adopting an extended posture.  相似文献

This study examines the annual energetics of a small folivorous marsupial, Pseudocheirus peregrinus. Particular attention was given to the energy and time allocated to reproduction by the females. Daily energy expenditure was measured directly using the doubly labelled water technique. Energy transferred to the young via the milk was estimated from information on milk composition and production. There was no significant seasonal variation in the energy expenditure or water influx of males or females. The mean daily energy expenditure of a 1-kg non-lactating adult ringtail possum was 615 kJ day–1 or 2.2 times standard metabolic rate. Females showed significant changes in daily energy expenditure according to their reproductive status. Without the burden of lactation the total annual energy expenditure of an adult female was estimated as 212.4 MJ kg–1 year–1. The total annual energy expenditure of a female rearing two young was 247.5 MJ kg–1 year–1, with the late stage of lactation constituting the most energetically expensive period accounting for 30% of the total yearly energy expenditure during 24% of the time. Total metabolisable energy allocation during reproduction (22 MJ kg) was similar to estimates available for other herbivores, although, the peak metabolisable energy allocation during lactation (759 kJ day–1) was lower than values available for other herbivores. The total energy requirement for reproduction (metabolisable energy plus potential energy exported to young via milk) suggests that the ringtail possum also has a relatively low overall energy investment in reproduction. It is suggested that the lactational strategy of the ringtail possum has been selected in order to spread the energy demands of reproduction over time due to constraints on the rate of energy intake imposed by a leaf diet and/or to prolong the mother-young bond. The strategies a female ringtail possum may employ to achieve energy balance when faced with the energy demands of reproduction are discussed.  相似文献

We explore a common feature of insect population dynamics, interspecific synchrony, which refers to synchrony in population dynamics among sympatric populations of different species. Such synchrony can arise via several possible mechanisms, including shared environmental effects and shared trophic interactions, but distinguishing the relative importance among different mechanisms can be challenging. We analyze interannual time series of population densities of the larch budmoth, Zeiraphera griseana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), along with six sympatric larch-feeding folivores from a site in the European Alps 1952–1979. These species include five lepidopterans, Exapate duratella, Ptycholomoides aeriferana, Spilonota laricana, Epirrita autumnata and Teleiodes saltuum, and one hymenopteran sawfly Pristiphora laricis. We document that the highly regular oscillatory behavior (period 9–10 years) of Z. griseana populations is similarly evident in the dynamics of most of the sympatric folivores. We also find that all of the sympatric species are phase synchronized with Z. griseana populations with half of the sympatric species exhibiting nonlagged phase synchrony and three of the species exhibiting 2–5 year lags behind Z. griseana populations. We adapt a previously developed tritrophic model of Z. griseana dynamics to explore possible mechanisms responsible for observed phase synchronization. Results suggest that either shared stochastic influences (e.g., weather) or shared parasitoid impacts are likely causes of nonlagged phase synchronization. The model further indicates that observed patterns of lagged phase synchronization are most likely caused by either shared delayed induced host plant defenses or direct density-dependent effects shared with Z. griseana.  相似文献

Seventeen sportive lemurs (Lepilemur ruficaudatus) were captured in a dry, deciduous forest in western Madagascar, and the resting metabolic rates were measured. According to the data, resting metabolic rates of Lepilemur ruficaudatus are among the lowest of mammalian folivores recorded so far. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

How small-bodied (500–1,200 g) folivorous prosimian primates cope with large amounts of foliage in their diet seasonally has yet to be determined for many species such as Hapalemur griseus, which specializes on bamboo. To address this issue, we present results on seasonal variation in activity and diet from a wild group of H. griseus in southeastern Madagascar. Throughout the study (which was conducted from July–November 1994 and July 1995–February 1996), H. griseus primarily fed on new growth from three species of bamboo: two species of liana bamboo and Cephalostachyum perrieri. Bamboo species were used in different ways seasonally; liana bamboo was consumed more during the dry, cool season, and C. perrieri was eaten more often during the wet, warm season. H. griseus also spent more of their time feeding and traveling than nocturnal folivores of similar body size during the dry season. During the warm wet season, H. griseus decreased the amount of time spent feeding and traveling and rested more often. We hypothesize that seasonal changes in activity may be primarily related to the distribution and availability of food sources and/or reproductive cycles. Am. J. Despite careful attention to animal nutrition and wellbeing, gastrointestinal distress remains relatively common in captive non‐human primates (NHPs), particularly dietary specialists such as folivores. These patterns may be a result of marked dietary differences between captive and wild settings and associated impacts on the gut microbiome. However, given that most existing studies target NHP dietary specialists, it is unclear if captive environments have distinct impacts on the gut microbiome of NHPs with different dietary niches. To begin to examine this question, we used 16S ribosomal RNA gene amplicon sequences to compare the gut microbiomes of five NHP genera categorized either as folivores (Alouatta, Colobus) or non‐folivores (Cercopithecus, Gorilla, Pan) sampled both in captivity and in the wild. Though captivity affected the gut microbiomes of all NHPs in this study, the effects were largest in folivorous NHPs. Shifts in gut microbial diversity and in the relative abundances of fiber‐degrading microbial taxa suggest that these findings are driven by marked dietary shifts for folivorous NHPs in captive settings. We propose that zoos and other captive care institutions consider including more natural browse in folivorous NHP diets and regularly bank fecal samples to further explore the relationship between NHP diet, the gut microbiome, and health outcomes.  相似文献

Activity patterns of Dendrohyrax arboreus were investigated by direct observation of a habituated population in the Parc National des Volcans, Rwanda. Of seventeen animals caught, four were males and thirteen were females. Of the population, 17% were juveniles. Population estimates from transects indicated a biomass of 23.3 kg/ha. Radio-tracking of ten individuals showed bimodal activity patterns, with peaks after dusk and later in the night for males and during the day in females. Hyrax were active 16% of the time. Feeding was the dominant activity and mature leaves of Hagenia abyssinica were the most important food. Travelling within and between trees occupied 4% of the time and occurred predominantly during daylight hours. Calling behaviour was markedly seasonal, being most pronounced in the dry season when hyrax called regularly in the early evening, and often a second time late at night. During the rains, calls were infrequent and unpredictable, tending to occur in the second half of the night. There was no correlation between weather or lunar conditions and calling behaviour. The ecological strategy of tree hyrax in terms of metabolic rate, thermoregulation and energy conservation is discussed in the light of their activity and feeding behaviour.  相似文献
