Intracellular crystals of aragonite have been identified by selected area electron diffraction (SAED) in a species of the freshwater filamentous alga Spirogyra from the Thames River, Ontario, Canada. The crystals are 2 to 24 μm in diameter, and characterized by a unique cross-shaped morphology, in which needle-like, or prismatic outgrowths develop from a common axis. Crystals may be dispersed throughout filaments, but tend to cluster as aggregates towards the centre .  相似文献

Calcification in aquatic plants   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract. The CaCO3 deposits of aquatic plants may be intra-, inter- and extracellular. Calcification is mainly the result of photosynthetic CO2 or HCO3 assimilation. This raises the local pH and CO2−3 concentration resulting from shifts in the dissolved inorganic carbon equilibrium, due to either net CO2 depletion as in Halimeda or localized OH efflux (or H+ influx) as in Chara. The plant cell wall may be important in CaCO3 nucleation by acting as an epitaxial substratum or template, or by creating a microenvironment enriched in Ca2+ compared to Mg2+. Hypotheses on the reason for the lack of calcification in many aquatic plants are presented.  相似文献

With 1429 animal species, the Triassic Cassian Formation in the Dolomites, Southern Alps (Italy), yields the highest species richness reported from any spatially constrained pre-Quaternary formation known to science. The high preserved diversity is partly attributable to a high primary diversity governed by the tropical setting, increasing alpha diversity, and the breadth of habitats spurring beta diversity. More important is the excellent preservation of fossils and the ease with which they can be extracted from the poorly lithified sediments. We propose the term ‘liberation Lagerstätten’ to capture this preservational window. In contrast to conservation Lagerstätten, liberation Lagerstätten like the Cassian Formation originate from normal marine conditions but low-grade diagenesis. Molluscs contribute substantially to species richness, comprising 67% of all invertebrate species in the Cassian Formation. The gastropod dominance (39% of all species) is nearly as great as in Recent tropical settings, contradicting the concept of a substantial Cenozoic rise.  相似文献

Based on the aragonite composition of extant and exceptionally preserved fossil cephalopods going back to the early Palaeozoic, it is commonly assumed that all externally shelled cephalopods had an aragonitic shell wall. We demonstrate herein that at least two taxa of Siluro‐Devonian orthoconic nautiloids (Dawsonoceras, Spyroceras) had an original bimineralic shell, which developed convergently with gastropods and bivalves.  相似文献

New empirical and quantitative data in the study of calcium carbonate biomineralization and an expanded coralline psbA framework for phylomineralogy are provided for crustose coralline red algae. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM‐EDS) pinpointed the exact location of calcium carbonate crystals within overgrown reproductive conceptacles in rhodolith‐forming Lithothamnion species from the Gulf of Mexico and Pacific Panama. SEM‐EDS and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the elemental composition of these calcium carbonate crystals to be aragonite. After spore release, reproductive conceptacles apparently became overgrown by new vegetative growth, a strategy that may aid in sealing the empty conceptacle chamber, hence influencing the chemistry of the microenvironment and in turn promoting aragonite crystal growth. The possible relevance of various types of calcium carbonate polymorphs present in the complex internal structure and skeleton of crustose corallines is discussed. This is the first study to link SEM, SEM‐EDS, XRD, Microtomography and X‐ray microscopy data of aragonite infill in coralline algae with phylomineralogy. The study contributes to the growing body of literature characterizing and speculating about how the relative abundances of carbonate biominerals in corallines may vary in response to changes in atmospheric pCO2, ocean acidification, and global warming.  相似文献

The formation of skeletal structures composed of different calcium carbonate polymorphs (e.g. aragonite and calcite) appears to be both biologically and environmentally regulated. Among environmental factors influencing aragonite and calcite precipitation, changes in seawater conditions—primarily in the molar ratio of magnesium and calcium during so-called ‘Calcite’ (mMg:mCa below 2) or ‘Aragonite’ seas (mMg:mCa above 2)—have had profound impacts on the distribution and performance of marine calcifiers throughout Earth's history. Nonetheless, the fossil record shows that some species appear to have counteracted such changes and kept their skeleton polymorph unaltered. Here, the aragonitic octocoral Heliopora coerulea and the aragonitic scleractinian Montipora digitata were exposed to Calcite Sea-like mMg:mCa with various levels of magnesium and calcium concentration, and changes in both the mineralogy (i.e. CaCO3 polymorph) and gene expression were monitored. Both species maintained aragonite deposition at lower mMg:mCa ratios, while concurrent calcite presence was only detected in M. digitata. Despite a strong variability between independent experimental replicates for both species, the expression for a set of putative calcification-related genes, including known components of the M. digitata skeleton organic matrix (SkOM), was found to consistently change at lower mMg:mCa. These results support the previously proposed involvements of the SkOM in counteracting decreases in seawater mMg:mCa. Although no consistent expression changes in calcium and magnesium transporters were observed, down-regulation calcium channels in H. coerulea in one experimental replicate and at an mMg:mCa of 2.5, pointing to a possible active calcium uptake regulation by the corals under altered mMg:mCa.  相似文献

Abstract: Pojetaia and Fordilla are the oldest bivalve molluscs, occurring in roughly co‐eval rocks from the Tommotian, and are the only undisputed, well‐known bivalves from the Cambrian. New specimens reveal that Pojetaia had a laminar inner shell microstructure reminiscent of the foliated aragonite of modern monoplacophorans, and the same is true for Fordilla. A similar shell microstructure is seen in Anabarella and Watsonella, providing support for the hypothesis that they are the ancestors of bivalves. Foliated aragonite shares many similarities with nacre, and it may have been the precursor to nacre in bivalves. No cases of undisputed nacre occur in the Cambrian, in spite of much shell microstructure data from molluscs of this time period. Thus, although considered by many to be homologous among molluscs, we conclude that nacre convergently evolved in monoplacophorans, gastropods, bivalves, and cephalopods. This independent origin of nacre appears to have taken place during, or just prior to, the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event and represents a significant step in the arms race between predators and molluscan prey.  相似文献

Carbonate and phosphate precipitation by bacteria isolated from a saline soil was studied in vitro in a liquid culture medium over 45 days. Physicochemical parameters of this medium were continuously monitored using both selective electrodes (continuous monitoring, CM) and individual measurements by other techniques on days 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 35 and 45 (discontinuous monitoring, DM). In DM, the precipitated minerals were studied (XRD and SEM-EDX) and the saturation index of the mineral phases was analyzed (PHREEQC program). Using the CM and DM data it was possible to distinguish several temporary stages in which both the medium and the mineralogy changed: 1) 0 to 10 days: pH reaches 8.4; significant loss of Mg2+ (incorporated into the bacterial biomass) and Ca2+ (through mineral precipitation); formation of crystals, although not in sufficient quantity to be studied until day 10. 2) 10 to 25 days: pH decreases but remains above 8; appreciable loss of Mg2+ and Ca2+ due to formation of spherical carbonate bioliths with traces of phosphates occluded within these carbonates. 3) After 25 days: biomineralization slow down; pH returns to initial values and struvite is formed (idiomorphic prismatic crystals). These trends are in agreement with the findings of other workers, although with some peculiarities regarding stages and types of mineral precipitated. In some cases the struvite contained small quantities of K and Ca, possibly because these are intermediate mineral species between typic-struvite, K-struvite and Ca-struvite. The bacteria-mediated precipitation of carbonates of Ca and/or Mg and phosphates (struvite) by the bacteria from a saline soil is demonstrated. However, struvite was not found in the soils of origin of the bacteria, possibly because it is a metastable mineral in most soils.  相似文献

In order to better understand Late Quaternary pelagic aragonite preservation in the western Arabian Sea we have investigated a high-resolution sediment core 905 off Somalia. Pteropod preservation is enhanced in times of reduced monsoon-driven productivity, indicated by low amounts of Corg and low barium to aluminium (Ba/Al) ratios. All periods corresponding to Heinrich events in the North Atlantic are represented by maxima in shell preservation of the common pteropod Limacina inflata (LDX values < 2, except for H5-equivalent with a poorer shell preservation, LDX > 2.66). Good shell preservation is also found during stadials at 52.1–53.2, 36, 33.2, and 31.9 ka. Relative abundance of pteropods and their fragments in the coarse fraction reaches maxima during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5.2, during time-equivalents of Heinrich events 4–6 and in stadials at  53,  42.5, and 41.4 ka.On longer time scales, the pteropod abundance corresponds to the ‘Indo-Pacific carbonate preservation type’ with poor preservation during interglacials and better preservation during glacials. Late MIS 5 to early MIS 4 sections (84.1–64.8 ka) and the Late Holocene interval (6.5–0 ka) of core 905 contain only traces of pteropods. The early Holocene (9.2–6.5 ka) part is characterized by low pteropod amounts. Between 64.8 and 43.4 ka strong fluctuations occur and an intermediate average relative pteropod abundance is revealed. Between 43.4 and 9.2 ka the highest amounts in relative pteropod abundance in core 905 are observed. Besides the regional monsoonal influence on deepwater chemistry, changes in deepwater circulation occurring on glacial/interglacial and stadial/interstadial time scales might have affected pteropod preservation. However, it remains elusive whether 1) deep water formation in the Arabian Sea, 2) inflow of Glacial North Atlantic Intermediate Water or 3) change in water mass properties of the Circumpolar Deep Water (which is the water mass currently bathing this site) contributed to the observed pteropod preservation pattern.  相似文献

To date, meta‐analyses of effects of acidification have focused on the overall strength of evidence for statistically significant responses; however, to anticipate likely consequences of ocean acidification, quantitative estimates of the magnitude of likely responses are also needed. Herein, we use random effects meta‐analysis to produce a systematically integrated measure of the distribution of magnitudes of the response of coral calcification to decreasing ΩArag. We also tested whether methodological and biological factors that have been hypothesized to drive variation in response magnitude explain a significant proportion of the among‐study variation. We found that the overall mean response of coral calcification is ~15% per unit decrease in ΩArag over the range 2 < ΩArag < 4. Among‐study variation is large (standard deviation of 8% per unit decrease in ΩArag). Neither differences in carbonate chemistry manipulation method, study duration, irradiance level, nor study species growth rate explained a significant proportion of the among‐study variation. However, studies employing buoyant weighting found significantly smaller decreases in calcification per unit ΩArag (~10%), compared with studies using the alkalinity anomaly technique (~25%). These differences may be due to the greater tendency for the former to integrate over light and dark calcification. If the existing body of experimental work is indeed representative of likely responses of corals in nature, our results imply that, under business as usual conditions, declines in coral calcification by end‐of‐century will be ~22%, on average, or ~15% if only studies integrating light and dark calcification are considered. These values are near the low end of published projections, but support the emerging view that variability due to local environmental conditions and species composition is likely to be substantial.  相似文献
