The community of Gamboa is located on Itacuruçá Island, Sepetiba Bay (State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and includes 26 families, mostly of artisanal fishermen who use paddled or motor canoes, and encircling nets for fishing. In this study, predictions from optimal foraging theory (patch model), in particular of patch residence time, are compared to the observed behavior of fishermen on fishing trips. Fishermen's strategies differ depending on their intended prey. They spend more time in patches and use fewer patches for shrimp than for fish. Gamboa's fishermen tend to leave a patch later than predicted by the model. The difficulty in evaluating stock availability, the comparatively few patches available for shrimp, and the competitive aspects of fishing contribute to the explanation of this behavior. 相似文献

Theory and analyses of fisheries data sets indicate that harvesting can alter population structure and destabilise non-linear processes, which increases population fluctuations. We conducted a factorial experiment on the population dynamics of Daphnia magna in relation to size-selective harvesting and stochasticity of food supply. Harvesting and stochasticity treatments both increased population fluctuations. Timeseries analysis indicated that fluctuations in control populations were non-linear, and non-linearity increased substantially in response to harvesting. Both harvesting and stochasticity induced population juvenescence, but harvesting did so via the depletion of adults, whereas stochasticity increased the abundance of juveniles. A fitted fisheries model indicated that harvesting shifted populations towards higher reproductive rates and larger-magnitude damped oscillations that amplify demographic noise. These findings provide experimental evidence that harvesting increases the non-linearity of population fluctuations and that both harvesting and stochasticity increase population variability and juvenescence. 相似文献

An annual average of 163 Kuril seals was found dead in two years in salmon trap nets along the coastal waters of the Nemuro Peninsula and adjacent areas. The seal-caused damage to the total salmon catch at the salmon trap nets was concentrated in some of them, particularly No. 27, where seals killed or injured 5.1% of the catch in 1982, and 1.8% in 1983. Based on the proportion of Kuril seals among the dead seals in the trap nets, it was estimated that Kuril seals damaged 4.7% of the total salmon catch at No. 27 in 1982, and 1.7% in 1983. During 1985–1990, two groups of killer whales in Prince William Sound, Alaska, experienced unusually high rates of mortality, while seven others did not. Those affected were AB pod, part of the southern Alaska population of resident (fish-eating) killer whales, and the AT1 transient (marine mammal–eating) group, a very small, reproductively isolated population that last reproduced in 1984. In 1985–1986, several AB pod members were shot by fishermen defending their catch from depredation, which explains some of the deaths. Understanding the other deaths is complicated by the Exxon Valdez oil spill (March 1989) and uncertainties about the causes and times of the deaths. For AB pod, possible factors involved in the post-spill mortalities are delayed effects of bullet wounds, continued shooting, oil exposure, and consequences of being orphaned. For the AT1 group, possible factors are oil exposure, small population size, old age, and high-contaminant burdens. An analysis of possible effects of inhalation of volatile organic compounds, contact with the oil slick, and ingestion of oil with water or prey did not reveal route(s) of exposure that could explain the mortalities. In order to provide biological evidence of the real impact of mosquito seine nets in southwestern Madagascar, an efficient procedure for determining the size at maturity of small-sized tropical fishes was developed. The fishes caught by two small-scale fishermen were studied between October 2017 and April 2018. One catch per day was analyzed three days per month during the full-moon period. In the laboratory, fishes were all sorted by morphospecies, photographed and measured. One individual per morphospecies was selected for being identified using CO1 DNA barcoding. A total of 34,051 individual fishes belonging to 144 DNA bacoded species from 48 families was obtained from 42 samples, 467 individuals from 22 morphospecies that had not been successfully barcoded were excluded from the analyses. The macroscopic observations of 8,143 individuals between 0.7 and 10 cm SL indicated the proportion of individuals with clearly observable gonads was 15% only.Among the 144 species identified via DNA barcoding, 83 consisted of individuals that were all without clearly observable gonads, seven of individuals that were all with clearly observable gonads and 54 included of individuals with and without clearly observable gonads. As the determination of L50 using logistic general linear models failed for most species, the minimum size at maturity was retained to determine the proportion of juveniles and adults for these 54 species. Compared to the data available in FishBase, the minimum size at maturity appears more adequate to discrimine juvenile from adult fish of small-sized tropical species. 相似文献

The commercial fishery for northern cod off Newfoundland has been closed since 1992. Since then, the recreational “food fishery”; has also been closed, as have the fisheries for many additional cod and other groundfish stocks. The Newfoundland fisheries had been commercially unviable for many years before the closures. This article records the federal and provincial governments’ financial outlays (expenditures, transfer payments to individuals, subsidies, net equity purchases, and net loans) on the fishery during the decade following 1981. Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) Fishing is considered a major threat to high seas fish stocks. Each of the the international regional fishery management organizations (RFMOs) are combating some form of IUU fishing and this led the Food and Agriculture Oranization of the United Nations (FAO) to adopt the International Plan of Action to Deter, Prevent and Eliminate IUU Fishing (IPOA-IUU). This article will analyze the issues involved with IUU fishing, examine the recommendations in the IPOA, and consider examples of successful management and enforcement measures in use by states and RFMOs.
