We report evidence of one of the oldest known animal migratory episodes in the form of queues of the eyeless trilobite Trimerocephalus chopini Kin & B?a?ejowski, from the Late Devonian (Famennian) of central Poland. In addition, there is evidence for two morphs in this population, one with nine segments and the other with ten. We infer that these queues represent mass migratory chains coordinated by chemotaxis, comparable to those observed in modern crustaceans such as spiny lobsters, and further suggest that the two forms, which occur in an approximately 1:1 ratio, may be dimorphs. These ancient arthropods may have migrated periodically to shallow marine areas for mass mating and spawning. The sudden death of the trilobites in the queues may have been caused by excess carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide introduced into the bottom water by distal storm disturbance of anoxic sediments. This study demonstrates the potential for further research on the evolution and ecology of aggregative behaviour in marine arthropods.  相似文献

The CCAAT motif-binding factor NF-Y consists of three different subunits, NF-YA, NF-YB, and NF-YC, all of which are required for formation of the NF-Y complex and DNA-binding. NF-YA contains a DNA binding domain in its C-terminal region. We established transgenic fly lines carrying the UAS-HA-dNF-YA or UAS-dNF-YAIR and showed over-expression or knockdown with various GAL4 drivers to be lethal at various developmental stages, suggesting that dNF-YA participate in various gene regulatory pathways during Drosophila development. Expression of dNF-YA with eyeless-GAL4 mainly resulted in lethality with a headless phenotype in pharate-adults. Reduction of the eyeless gene dose enhanced the dNF-YA-induced phenotype, while reduction of the Distal-less gene dose suppressed the phenotype. On the other hand, crossing the dNF-YA over-expressing flies with Notch mutant resulted in no apparent effect on the phenotype. These results suggest that dNF-YA can disturb eye disc specification, but not eye disc growth.  相似文献

The Rho family small guanosine triphosphatases (GTPases) play important roles in many cellular processes, especially in regulation of cytoskeletal organization. In this study, I examined the functions of Rac1 and Cdc42 for disc morphogenesis in Drosophila. I expressed either a constitutively active form or a dominant negative form of each protein during early morphogenesis of eye discs. Inactivation of Rac1 or Cdc42 resulted in small eye phenotypes. On the other hand, I found that activation of either Rac1 or Cdc42 induces ectopic antennae. In some cases, an almost complete antenna was observed instead of an eye, which was possibly transformation from an eye to an antenna. As a molecular evidence for the ectopic antennae, I found that the Distal-less protein, which is essential for the distalization process, was ectopically induced in the eye discs. I also found that the Decapentaplegic and Wingless proteins, which are upstream morphogenetic signaling proteins of the distalization process, could be ectopically induced by activation of Rac1 or Cdc42. My observations suggest novel functions of Rac1 and Cdc42 for disc morphogenesis.  相似文献

A new genus and a new subgenus of semi-aphaenopsian trechine beetles are described from Furong Jiang valley in the bordering areas of Chongqing Shi (Municipality) and Guizhou Province, southwestern China: Deuveaphaenops Tian & Huang, n. gen. (type species: Deuveaphaenops qimenxicus Tian & Huang, n. sp. from Qimenxia Cave II, Wulong Xian, Chongqing) and Furongius Tian & Huang, n. subgen. (type species: Deuveaphaenops (Furongius) gelaophilus Tian & Huang, n. sp. from cave Xianmi Dong, Daozhen Xian, Guizhou). Deuveaphaenops probably belongs to the complex of Cathaiaphaenops, Qianotrechus, Guizhaphaenops and Sinotroglodytes.  相似文献

Organogenesis is a complex developmental process, which requires tight regulation of selector gene expression to specify individual organ types. The Pax6 homolog Eyeless (Ey) is an example of such a factor and its expression pattern reveals it is dynamically controlled during development. Ey?s paralog Twin of eyeless (Toy) induces its expression during embryogenesis, and the two genes are expressed in nearly identical patterns during the larval stages of development. While Ey must be expressed to initiate retinal specification, it must subsequently be repressed behind the morphogenetic furrow to allow for neuronal differentiation. Thus far, a few factors have been implicated in this repression including the signaling pathways Hedgehog (Hh) and Decapentaplegic (Dpp), and more recently downstream components of the retinal determination gene network (RDGN) Sine oculis (So), Eyes absent (Eya), and Dachshund (Dac). Homeodomain-interacting protein kinase (Hipk), a conserved serine–threonine kinase, regulates numerous factors during tissue patterning and development, including the Hh pathway. Using genetic analyses we identify Hipk as a repressor of both Toy and Ey and show that it may do so, in part, through Hh signaling. We also provide evidence that Ey repression is a critical step in ectopic eye development and that Hipk plays an important role in this process. Because Ey repression within the retinal field is a critical step in eye development, we propose that Hipk is a key link between eye specification and patterning.  相似文献

Co-option of the eye developmental gene regulatory network may have led to the appearance of novel functional traits on the wings of flies and butterflies. The first trait is a recently described wing organ in a species of extinct midge resembling the outer layers of the midge's own compound eye. The second trait is red pigment patches on Heliconius butterfly wings connected to the expression of an eye selector gene, optix. These examples, as well as others, are discussed regarding the type of empirical evidence and burden of proof that have been used to infer gene network co-option underlying the origin of novel traits. A conceptual framework describing increasing confidence in inference of network co-option is proposed. Novel research directions to facilitate inference of network co-option are also highlighted, especially in cases where the pre-existent and novel traits do not resemble each other.  相似文献

A role for the Pax‐6 homologue eyeless in adult Drosophila brain development and function is described. eyeless expression is detected in neurons, but not glial cells, of the mushroom bodies, the medullar cortex, the lateral horn, and the pars intercerebralis. Furthermore, severe defects in adult brain structures essential for vision, olfaction, and for the coordination of locomotion are provoked by two newly isolated mutations of Pax‐6/eyeless that result in truncated proteins. Consistent with the morphological lesions, we observe defective walking behavior for these eyeless mutants. Pax6 and its Drosophila homolog Eyeless (Ey) play essential roles during eye development. Ey/Pax6 contains two distinct DNA binding domains, a Paired domain (PD) and a Homeodomain (HD). While Ey/Pax6 PD is required for the expression of key regulators of retinal development, relatively little is known about the HD-dependent Ey function. In this study, we used the UAS/GAL4 system to determine the functions of different Ey domains on cell growth and on retinal development. We showed that Ey can promote cell growth, which requires the HD but not the PD. In contrast, the ability of Ey to activate Ato expression and induce ectopic eye formation requires the PD but not the HD. Interestingly, deletion of the HD enhanced Ey-dependent ectopic eye induction while overexpression of the HD only Ey forms antagonizes ectopic eye induction. These studies revealed a novel function of Ey HD on cell growth and a novel antagonistic effect of Ey HD on Ey PD-dependent eye induction. We further show the third helix of the Ey HD can directly interact with the RED subdomain in Ey PD and that deletion of the HD increased the binding of Ey PD to its target. These results suggest that the direct interaction between the HD and the PD potentially mediates their antagonistic effects. Since different Ey splicing forms are expressed in overlapping regions during normal development, we speculate that the expression ratios of the different Ey splice forms potentially contribute to the regulation of growth and differentiation of these tissues.  相似文献
