Photosynthetic characteristics of detached barley leaves during greening in the presence of SAN 9785
The effects of the pyridazinone compound SAN 9785 on the photosynthetic competence of leaves, on the photochemical activity of isolated thylakoids and on the formation and spectral properties of chlorophyll-protein complexes were studied during a 72-h greening period of detached etiolated leaves of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Horpácsi kétsoros). It was established that i) the photosynthetic capacity of the leaves decreased considerably (by 80 and 90%, as determined by14CO2 fixation and fast fluorescence induction measurements, respectively); ii) the photochemical activity of isolated thylakoids from water to potassium ferricyanide and from dichlorophenol indophenol/ascorbate to methylviologen exhibited only slight reductions when expressed on a chlorophyll basis compared with the control; iii) the slow fluorescence induction curves of the treated leaves demonstrated the presence of a peculiar fluorescence component interrupting the quenching of fluorescence at around 1 min illumination; iv) a shortage of the chlorophyll-protein complex of photosystem I (CPI) occurred with a higher content of the monomer of the light harvesting complex in the thylakoids of treated leaves; and v) the fluorescence spectrum of the CPI band present in treated leaves indicates the destruction of the structural integrity of this complex during isolation from the membrane.Abbreviations Chl

Summary The ultrastructural organization of the human fetal choroid plexus was assessed with scanning electron microscopy. The membranous modifications of choroidal ependymal cells differ remarkably between 11 and 20 weeks of intrauterine development and suggest a variable functional capacity at different times of ontogenesis. The pseudanthia ofHeliopsis scabra andRudbeckia vulgaris (Asteraceae) were examined during the anthesis for differences in their UV patterns. Distinct changes in the reflectance and absorbance properties could be observed. The results suggest a close correlation between different stages of floral development and pollinator attraction.

Many deterministic models of sexually transmitted diseases, as well as population models in general, contain elements of stochastic or statistical reasoning. An example of such a model is that of Dietz and Hadeler (1988) concerning sexually transmitted diseases in which there is partnership formation and dissolution. Among the interesting formulas in this paper, which enter into the analysis of the model, are those for the expected number of partners a male or female has during a lifetime. To a probabilist such formulas suggest the possibility that some stochastic process may be constructed so as to yield these formulas as well as others that may be of interest. The principal purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that such a stochastic process does indeed exist in the form of a three state semi-Markov process in continuous time with stationary laws of evolution and with a one-step density matrix determined by four parameters which were interpreted as constant latent risk functions in the classical theory of competing risks. This construction of a semi-Markov process not only provides a framework for the systematic derivation of the formulas of Dietz and Hadeler but also suggests pathways,for extensions to the age-dependent case.This research was partially supported by NATO Grant D.890350 相似文献

The metabolic significance of Se in plants is not well documented, though the presence of many selenoenzymes in bacteria and
the essentiality of Se in higher animals is established. Since germination is an active process in plant growth and metabolism,
the effect of Se was investigated in germinatingVigna radiata L, a nonaccumulating Sedeficient legume. Growth and protein were enhanced in seedlings supplemented with selenium (Se) as
sodium selenite in the medium up to 1 μg/mL. The pattern of uptake of75Se in the differentiating tissues and the subcellular distribution were investigated. The percentage of incorporation of75Se was greater in the mitochondria at the lowest level (0.5 μg/mL) of Se supplementation compared to higher levels of Se exposure.
Proteins precipitated from the postmitochondrial supernatant fractions, when separated by means of polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis
(PAGE), indicated a major selenoprotein in the seedlings germinated at 2.0 μg/mL Se. In seedlings grown with supplemented
Se, enhanced respiratory control ratio and succinate dehydrogenase activity were observed in the mitochondria of tissues,

The rubidium content of whole blood was estimated by instrumental neutron activation analysis. In 46 healthy children it amounts
to {ie193-1} g/g dry weight. There was no difference between the values found for infants, toddlers, and school children.
In 29 dietetically treated patients with phenylketonuria and maple-syrup-urine disease the values were significantly lower
than in healthy children. During the first three months of diet therapy the rubidium levels remained in the lower range of
the normal values, decreasing to about 60% of the mean of normal values later on. With increasing length of diet therapy these
values tended to decrease. It remains questionable whether these decreased levels reflect only an induced biochemical phenomenon

(i) Myosin from chicken gizzards was purified by a modification of an earlier procedure (M. N. Malik, 1978,Biochemistry17, 27–32). When this myosin, as well as that prepared by the method of A. Sobieszek and R. D. Bremel (1975,Eur. J. Biochem.55, 49–60), was analyzed by gradient slab gel using the discontinuous buffer system of Neville (1971,J. Biol. Chem.246, 6328–6334), a closely spaced doublet in the heavy chain and four light chains were observed as opposed to one heavy chain and two light chains with the method of Weber and Osborn (1969, J. Biol. Chem.244, 4406–4412). These findings raise the possibility of the existence of myosin isoenzymes in smooth muscle. (ii) The purified gizzard myosin was found to be free of kinase and phosphatase. Phosphorylation or thiophosphorylation of myosin was observed only by exogenously adding kinase. A maximum of 1.2 mol of 32P/mol of myosin and 2.3 mol of 35S/mol of myosin were obtained. The actin-activated ATPase activity depended upon the extent of thiophosphorylation of myosin; a four- to fivefold increase in the activity was observed when myosin was fully thiophosphorylated. (i) The steady-state kinetic data obtained with purified gizzard and uterus smooth muscle myosins indicated the presence of a plateau region on the substrate-saturation curves. Hill plots of these data provided evidence for mixed positive and negative cooperative interactions. In contrast, when gizzard myosin was prepared according to the method of A. Sobieszek and R.D. Bremel (1975, Eur. J. Biochem.55, 49–60), the saturation curve in the presence of CaATP was hyperbolic and no cooperativity of the binding site(s) was discerned. However, in the presence of MgATP although the curve appeared hyperbolic the Hill plot of the data was biphasic with negative cooperativity at low MgATP concentration, (ii) When thiophosphorylated gizzard myosin was used for kinetic analysis, the plateau region in the presence of MnATP was eliminated from the saturation curve and this curve became hyperbolic. However, in the presence of MgATP, although the plateau was almost eliminated, the saturation curve was still biphasic with either no or greatly reduced negative cooperativity of binding sites at low MgATP concentrations but positive cooperativity of binding at high MgATP concentrations. In addition, the thiophosphorylation of myosin also increased the Km and V of MgATP and MnATP, thus indicating weaker affinity for these substrates with thiophosphorylated myosin. (iii) Gizzard myosin also hydrolyzed other nucleotides (the order of rates being CTP = ITP > ATP = UTP > GTP), therefore saturation kinetics using different nucleotides as substrates was also carried out. The saturation curves with each nucleotide were different i.e., hyperbolic with CTP, sigmoid with GTP, hyperbolic with biphasic Hill plot with ITP, and possessing plateau with UTP. The object of this study was to determine the kinetics of chromosome decondensation during the G1 period of the HeLa cell cycle. HeLa cells synchronized in the G1 period following the reversal of mitotic block were fused with Colcemid-arrested mitotic HeLa cells at 1.5, 3, 5, and 7 h
after the reversal of N2O block. The resulting prematurely condensed chromosomes (PCC) were classified into six categories depending on the degree
of their condensation. The frequency of occurrence of each category was plotted as a function of time after mitosis. The results
of this study indicate that the process of chromosome decondensation, initiated during the telophase of mitosis continues
throughout the G1 period without any interruption, thus the chromatin reaches an ultimate state of decondensation by the end of G1 period, when DNA synthesis is initiated. 相似文献

中国南方一些少数民族地区民间“端午药市”流传至今,体现了民族医药的独具特色及其深远影响。为了解瑶族端午药市交易现状和发掘民族医药传统知识,采用民族植物学等方法对湖南省蓝山县端午药市进行调查,完成包括基原、地方名、药用部位、用途和用法、出现频度等内容的药用植物编目。结果表明:蓝山县端午药市药用植物种类丰富,共收集鉴定103科 222属262种,药用植物种类广泛分布于各科和各属中,其中种类较多的科有五加科(11种)、茜草科(11种)、菊科(11种)、百合科(10种)、唇形科(9种)、蝶形花科(8种)、芸香科(7种)。药市药浴植物畅销且种类多样,达94种,占总数的35.9%,体现瑶族在治疗疾病上以预防保健为主的理念。经统计药市上均未被国家药典和地方标准收录的药用植物有131种,占总数的50.2%,成为发掘新药源、新用途的潜在资源。对端午药市售药者年龄的调查发现,售药者的年龄主要集中在50~59岁间,占总人数的67%,40岁以下的仅占总人数的3%,可见民族药用传统知识的传承存在传承人老龄化、潜在传承人数量锐减的现象。此外,还对药市交易药用植物的种类组成和民族药用特色进行分析,探讨了端午药市对药用传统知识保护与传承的影响,并对蓝山端午药市的可持续发展提出了建议。 相似文献
