Ice crystal formation temperature was determined in the region of the crown in one group of 7-day-old intact unhardened high-salt plants of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Weibulls Starke II) with TA (Thermal Analysis) and DTA (Differential Thermal Analysis) methods. After exposure of another group of plants, grown for the first 7 days in the same way as the first group, to various sub-zero temperatures (-1 to 5°C), influx in roots of Rb+(86Rb+) and Ca2+(45Ca2+) and contents of K+ and Ca2+ were determined at intervals during 7 days of recovery. Ice crystal formation in the crown tissue was probably extracellular and took place at about -4°C. There was a large loss of K+ from the roots after treatment at sub-zero temperatures. This loss increased as the temperature of the sub-zero treatment decreased. During recovery, roots of plants exposed to -1, -2 and -3°C gradually reabsorbed K+. Reabsorption of K+ in roots of plants exposed to -4°C was greatly impaired. Rb+ influx decreased and Ca2+ influx increased after sub-zero temperature treatments of the plants. Active Rb+ influx mechanisms and active extrusion of Ca2+ were impaired or irreversibly damaged by the exposure. While Rb+ influx mechanisms were apparently repaired during recovery in plants exposed to temperatures down to -3°C, Ca2+ extrusion mechanisms were not. The temperature for ice crystal formation in the region of the crown tissue coincides with the temperature at which the plants lost the ability to reabsorb K+ and to repair Rb+ influx mechanisms during the recovery period. Plants were lethally damaged at temperatures below ?4°C.  相似文献

Effects of tissue position (viz. outer vs inner mesocarp) and heat treatment (48°C, 20 min) on variations in polygalacturonase (EC 3.2.1.15 and EC 3.2.1.67) activity and ripening of fruits of Carica papaya L. cv. Backcross Solo were investigated. Polygalacturonase activity increased during ripening concomitantly with an increase in tissue softness and soluble polyuronide level. Throughout ripening, inner mesocarp tissue was softer and contained higher polygalacturonase activity than outer mesocarp tissue. Titratable acidity as well as ß-galactosidase (EC 3.2.1.23) activity also increased during ripening; however, unlike polygalacturonase, their level or activity was lower in inner than in outer mesocarp. Ascorbic acid could partially account for the increase in titratable acidity during ripening but contributed very little to the differences in titratable acid levels between outer and inner mesocarp. Heat treatment had no effect on either fruit softness or titratable acidity, but it markedly reduced the increase in ascorbic acid and polygalacturonase activity during ripening. Ripening, as reflected by changes in tissue softness and polygalacturonase activity, progressed outwardly from the interior towards the exterior of the fruit. The effect of heat treatment in suppressing polygalacturonase activity was relatively greater in inner than in outer mesocarp, suggesting that sensitivity of the enzyme to heat treatment may vary with stage of ripeness of the tissue.  相似文献

Kinetic continuum models are derived for cells that crawl over a 2D substrate, undergo random reorientation, and turn in response to contact with a neighbor. The integro-partial differential equations account for changes in the distribution of orientations in the population. It is found that behavior depends on parameters such as total mass, random motility, adherence, and sloughing rates, as well as on broad aspects of the contact response. Linear stability analysis, and numerical, and cellular automata simulations reveal that as parameters are varied, a bifurcation leads to loss of stability of a uniform (isotropic) steady state, in favor of an (anisotropic) patterned state in which cells are aligned in parallel arrays.  相似文献

In this note we outline some recent results on the development of a statistical testing methodology for inverse problems involving partial differential equation models. Applications to several problems from biology are presented. The statistical tests, which are in the spirit of analysis of variance (ANOVA), are based on asymptotic distributional results for estimators and residuals in a least squares approach.Research supported in part under grants NSF MCS 8504316, NASA NAG-1-517, and AFOSRF-49620-86-C-0111. The understanding of sex determination in general, but in particular in mammals, has been a subject of scientific speculation for a long time. It has been shown that in many vertebrate and invertebrate species, the sex of an individual is determined by the individual's chromosomal constitution. Initial studies of classical genetic searching for sex-transforming mutations and the scrupulous analyses of modified phenotypes have shed light on the mechanism(s) of sex-determination. They paved the road to successful studies at molecular level. After a brief review on sex determination in chosen model species, the “Drosophila system” is presented to exemplify a possible general principle for sex determinism.  相似文献

A functional differential equation which is nonlinear and involves forward and backward deviating arguments is solved numerically. The equation models conduction in a myelinated nerve axon in which the myelin completely insulates the membrane, so that the potential change jumps from node to node. The equation is of first order with boundary values given at t=±. The problem is approximated via a difference scheme which solves the problem on a finite interval by utilizing an asymptotic representation at the endpoints, cubic interpolation and iterative techniques to approximate the delays, and a continuation method to start the procedure. The procedure is tested on a class of problems which are solvable analytically to access the scheme's accuracy and stability, then applied to the problem that models propagation in a myelinated axon. The solution's dependence on various model parameters of physical interest is studied. This is the first numerical study of myelinated nerve conduction in which the advance and delay terms are treated explicitly.Supported in part by NSF Grant MCS8301724 and by a Biomedical Research Support Grant 2SO7RR0706618 from NIH  相似文献

In the use of age structured population models for agricultural applications such as the modeling of crop-pest interactions it is often essential that the model take into account the distribution in maturation rates present in some or all of the populations. The traditional method for incorporating distributed maturation rates into crop and pest models has been the so-called distributed delay method. In this paper we review the application of the distributed delay formalism to the McKendrick equation of an age structured population. We discuss the mathematical properties of the system of ordinary differential equations arising out of the distributed delay formalism. We then discuss an alternative method involving modification of the Leslie matrix.  相似文献

Based primarily on an intensive marking/resighting program conducted at Marion Island (46°54'S, 37°45'E) in the Southern Ocean, the inter-island movements of southern elephant seals, Mirounga leonina , and fur seals Arctocephalus spp., were investigated to elucidate their little known pelagic phase. Southern elephant seals, in particular immature animals, readily move between the proximate Marion and Prince Edward islands. Some range as far afield as Iles Crozet, approximately 1,000 km distant where they haul out for the summer molt or during an autumn resting phase. The exchange of individuals between Marion Island and Iles Crozet during the return of immatures for the molt after a winter at sea, suggests overlapping of the foraging ranges of the two populations. Despite their wanderings, the majority of M. leonina from Marion Island probably feed in the proximity of the island, and relocate onto the island for breeding, molting and resting. Of the fur seals, only a few A. tropicalis were seen away from their natal island, in some cases covering distances in excess of 2,000 km. displaying a remarkable dispersal capacity.  相似文献
