Birds often lose feathers during predation attempts, and thisability has evolved as a means of escape. Because predatorsare more likely to grab feathers on the rump and the back thanon the ventral side of an escaping bird, we predicted that theformer feathers would have evolved to be relatively looselyattached as an antipredator strategy in species that frequentlydie from predation. We estimated the force required to removefeathers from the rump, back, and breast by pulling featherswith a spring balance from a range of European bird speciesin an attempt to investigate ecological factors associated withease of feather loss during predation attempts. The force requiredto loosen a feather from the rump was less than that requiredto loosen a feather from back, which in turn was less than thatrequired to loosen a feather from the breast. The relative forceneeded to loosen rump feathers compared with feathers from theback and the breast was smaller for prey species preferred bythe most common predator of small passerine birds, the sparrowhawkAccipiter nisus. Likewise, the relative force was also smallerin species with a high frequency of complete tail loss amongfree-living birds, which we used as an index of the frequencyof failed predation attempts. The relative force required toremove feathers from the rump was smaller in species with ahigh frequency of fear screams, another measure of the relativeimportance of predation as a cause of death. Feather loss requiredparticularly little force among solitarily breeding bird speciesthat suffer the highest degree of predation. Antipredator defensein terms of force required to remove feathers from the rumpwas larger in species with a strong antiparasite defense interms of T-cell–mediated immune response. These findingsare consistent with the hypothesis that different defenses areantagonistic and that they are traded off against each other.  相似文献

We analyzed the pattern of correlations among fitness components, herbivory, and resin characteristics in a natural all-aged stand of ponderosa pine, to infer the strength and mechanism of natural selection on plant chemistry. Male and female cone production were monitored yearly for 15 years, and levels of herbivory for 9 years in 165 trees. Resin flow rate and monoterpene composition were determined for these same trees. Multiple regression of fitness components on resin characteristics showed significant associations consistent with directional selection for increased resin flow rates and increased proportions of α- and β-pinene, myrcene and terpinolene. However, negative correlations among monoterpene fractions of the resin constrained the overall selection. Selective herbivory by aphids approached statistical significance and monoterpenes showed some (non-significant) effect as deterrents against deer browse. Resin characteristics were not correlated with attack by cone insects or porcupines. However, the association between resin characteristics and fitness is significantly different from that predicted by the path coefficients involving herbivores. Therefore the hypothesis that these herbivores mediate selection on the resin is not supported by the observed pattern of correlations among resin characteristics, herbivory, growth and fecundity. In this population, most of the association between resin characteristics and fitness appears to be mediated by some other factor independent of attack by herbivore species present. The evolutionary response of plant populations to selection for increased defense may be constrained by costs of defense. The purpose of this study was to investigate such constraints on the evolution of defense due to a cost of defense manifested as a trade-off between defense and tolerance. Variation in the response to artificial damage (tolerance) among lines of Brassica rapa that had been artificially selected for foliar glucosinolate content (defense) was examined. Leaf area was removed from replicates of three selection lines (high glucosinolates, control, and low glucosinolates) at three damage levels (0%, 20%, and 60% damage). An external cost of defense would result in a statistically significant selection line by damage treatment interaction, with those selected for high defense expressing less tolerance than those selected for low defense. Damage treatment had a significant overall effect on estimated total fitness, with fitness declining with increasing damage level. Further, selection line also had a significant overall effect on estimated total fitness, with low-defense selection lines having higher fitness compared to both control and high-defense selection lines. More importantly, a cost of defense in terms of tolerance was demonstrated by a significant selection line-by-damage treatment interaction. This interaction was in the direction to demonstrate a genetic trade-off between defense and tolerance, with low-defense selection lines decreasing estimated total fitness in response to damage less than both control and high-defense selection lines. Variation in tolerance among selection lines was due to the greater ability of low-defense lines to maintain fruit and seed production despite the presence of damage. In terms of tolerance, this cost of glucosinolate production in B. rapa could constrain the evolution of increased defense and, in so doing, maintain individuals within the population that are poorly defended yet tolerant.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Brood parasites often must overcome host defenses that may include behaviors that serve other functions, such as deterrence of predators and nest attendance during laying and incubation. Host use by brood parasites may also be influenced by competitors in areas where more than one parasitic species occurs. We identified the degree to which behavior of potential hosts and potential competitors affected laying by Brown‐headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater) and Bronzed Cowbirds (M. aeneus) at a site in south Texas where they co‐occur. We watched potential host nests during the presunrise period to record cowbird laying and document nest visitation, laying, cowbird‐host encounters, and nest attentiveness by hosts. Hosts were frequently at their nests when cowbirds laid eggs (83% of 121 watches among nests of five host species) and cowbirds regularly encountered hosts (43–74% and 40–77% of watches per species of host for Brown‐headed and Bronzed cowbirds, respectively). Host nest defense infrequently interfered with cowbird laying and cowbirds rarely interacted with one another during laying. Overall, 12% of the 42 cowbird laying attempts that elicited host nest defense failed, resulting in cowbird eggs either laid atop hosts as they sat in nests or laid outside the nest cup. We clearly documented that relatively small hosts can thwart parasitism by cowbirds. Thus, the potential for successful defense of nests should be considered when assessing the evolution of behaviors to deter the removal of host eggs by cowbirds and mechanisms leading to nest abandonment. Regarding the latter, the presence of a cowbird at a nest would be a poor indicator for parasitism as some laying attempts were thwarted and unparasitized broods were reared at those nests. Despite the potential for nest defense to affect host use by cowbirds, we did not detect an effect of nest defense. Because most host defense was ineffective, we examined hypotheses for the timing of cowbird laying and host nest attendance. Our analysis of time of day of laying by Brown‐headed Cowbirds at our site and data compiled from the literature suggests that laying time is best predicted by the time of civil twilight (first light) rather than sunrise.  相似文献

Summary I report here longer thorns induced by large mammal herbivory on the tree Acacia depranolobium. I compared trees that had been browsed by domestic goats to trees protected from goat browsing. Thorns on browsed branches within the reach of goats (<125 cm above the ground) were significantly longer than thorns from higher branches on the same browsed trees, and significantly longer than branches at similar heights on unbrowsed trees. It appears that increased thorn length was an induced response to large mammal herbivory in Acacia depranolobium, both among and within individual trees.  相似文献

Summary Endophagous folivores, which are concealed inside leaf tissue for much of their life cycle, or which live externally but feed internally, should be more successful on heavily defended plants than ectophagous species. This is because endophages are more facile at feeding selectively and can manipulate tissue development to avoid physical and chemical defenses and to enhance nutrition. As a result, endophage-ectophage ratios should increase on more heavily defended hosts. This pattern will likely be strengthened by negative asymmetrical interactions with ectophages and pathogens, which may displace endophages from lightly defended hosts. The hypothesis predicts that endophages should be particularly abundant in resource-poor habitats which seem to support a preponderance of heavily defended hosts. Although data do not yet exist for a rigorous test, several observed cases where endophage distributions seem biased toward heavily defended hosts are at least consistent with the hypothesis. Plant defense levels may have little influence on the total number of herbivores associated with a host, but I suggest that guild structure can be profoundly altered.  相似文献

Summary Although spinose teeth of holly leaves have been widely cited as an example of a physical defense against herbivores, this assumption is based largely on circumstantial evidence and on general misinterpretation of a single, earlier experiment. We studied the response of third and fifth instar larvae of the fall webworm, Hyphantria cunea Drury, a generalist, edge-feeding caterpillar, to intact American holly leaves and to leaves that had been modified by blunting the spines, by removing sections of leaf margin between the spines, or by removing the entire leaf margin. The results suggest that the thick glabrous cuticle and tough leaf margin of Ilex opaca are more important than the spinose teeth in deterring edge-feeding caterpillars. Microscopic examination of mature leaves revealed that the epidermis is thickened at the leaf margin, and that the leaf is cirucumscribed by a pair of fibrous veins. In simple choice tests neither domesticated rabbits nor captive whitetailed deer discriminated between spinescent holly foliage and foliage from which spines were removed. Nevertheless, we found little evidence of herbivory by mammals in the field, either on small experimental trees or in the forest understory. While it is possible that spinose teeth contribute to defense by reducing acceptibility of holly relative to other palatable plant species, we suggest that the high concentrations of saponins and poor nutritional quality of holly foliage may be more important than spines in deterring vertebrate herbivores. The degree of leaf spinescence and herbivory was compared at different heights with the tree canopy to test the prediction that lower leaves should be more spinescent as a deterrent to browsers. Leaves on lower branches of mature forest trees were slightly more spinescent than were upper leaves, and juvenile trees were slightly more spinescent than were mature trees. However, there was no relationship between degree of spinescence and feeding damage. The greater spinescence of holly leaves low in the canopy is probably an ontogenetic phenomenon rather than a facultative defense against browsers. The investigation reported in this paper (No. 87-7-8-77) is in connection with a project of the Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station and is published with the approval of the Dirctor  相似文献

Individuals of the orb-weaving spider Nephila clavipesbuild complex webs with a region used for prey capture, the orb, and tangle webs opposite either face, the barrier webs. Barrier webs have been hypothesized to serve a variety of functions, including predator defense, and the primary function of the barrier web should be reflected in the relative size of the barrier to the orb under varying conditions of foraging success and predation risk. To investigate the effects of predation pressure and foraging success on barrier web structure, I conducted a comparative study in three disjunct populations that differed in predation risk and foraging success. Although both the orb web and the barrier webs are silk, there was no indication of a foraging-defense trade-off. Barrier web structure did not change during seasonal shifts in orb web size related to changes in preycapture rate, and barrier web silk density and orb radius were positively correlated. The hypothesis that the construction of barrier webs is in part a response to predation pressure was supported. Barrier webs do deflect attacks by some predators, and barrier webs built by small spiders, suffering frequent predation attempts, had a higher silk density than barrier webs built by larger individuals. Additionally, barrier web complexity decreased at a later age in areas with higher predation risk.  相似文献

Pepper ( Capsicum annuum L. cv. Keystone Resistance Giant 3) seeds were monitored during priming to determine if seed treatments which accelerate the rate of germination could be correlated with specific physiological changes within the seeds. Pepper seeds primed with −0.90 and −1.35 MPa NaCl solutions at 23°C for 18 days did not completely equilibrate with the osmotic potential of the priming solution. Seed respiratory rates indicated that priming extends the lag phase of germination following imbibition. Soluble protein levels increased 115% in primed seeds, and the uptake and incorporation of [14C(U)] labelled amino acids into the acid insoluble fraction increased throughout the priming treatments. Alcohol dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.1, anaerobic metabolism), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.49) and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.44, pentose phosphate pathway) activities remained stable throughout the priming treatment, but were higher after 6 days. than the water-imbibed controls. Aldolase (EC 4.2.1.1. glycolysis) and isocitrate lyase (EC 4.1.3.1, glyoxylate cycle) activities increased with imbibition and were 61 and 56% (respectively) higher in primed seeds as compared to the water-imbibed controls after 12 days. Treatment with the −0.90 MPa NaCl solution was more effective than the −1.35 MPa solution in improving the rate of germination, yet there were no significant differences between the protein concentrations or enzyme activities of the two priming treatments. However, the incorporation of labelled amino acids into pepper seeds was significantly higher in the −0.90 MPa priming treatment.  相似文献
