ABSTRACT Previous studies have found that keeping the room dark at night was associated with a decrease in manic symptoms for patients with bipolar disorder (BD). However, the association between light at night of real-life conditions and manic symptoms is unclear. We investigated the association between bedroom light exposure at night and manic symptoms in BD patients. One-hundred and eighty-four outpatients with BD participated in this cross-sectional study. The average light intensity at night during sleep was evaluated using a portable photometer for seven consecutive nights. Manic symptoms were assessed using the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), and scores ≥5 were treated as a “hypomanic state.” The median (interquartile range) YMRS score was 2.0 (0–5.0), and 52 (28.2%) participants were in a hypomanic state. The prevalence of a hypomanic state was significantly higher in the participants with an average light intensity at night exposure of ≥3 lux than in those with <3 lux (36.7% versus 21.9%; P = .02). In multivariable logistic regression analysis adjusted for BD type, depressive symptoms, sleep duration, and daytime physical activity, the odds ratio (OR) for a hypomanic state was significantly higher for the participants with an average light intensity at night exposure of ≥3 lux than for those with <3 lux (OR: 2.15, 95% confidence interval: 1.09–4.22, P = .02). This association remained significant at the cutoff value of YMRS score ≥6 (OR: 2.51, 95% confidence interval: 1.15–5.46; P = .02). The findings of this study indicate bedroom light exposure at night is significantly associated with manic symptoms in BD patients. Although the results of this cross-sectional investigation do not necessarily imply causality, they may serve to inform beneficial nonpharmacological intervention and personalized treatment of BD patients. 相似文献

Isolate M of Potato virus A (PVA‐M; genus Potyvirus) is avirulent in Nicandra physaloides L. (family Solanaceae). The inoculated leaves are infected but no systemic infection is observed. Forty plants of ‘Black Pod’ (BP) and ‘Black Pod Alba’ (BPA), two variants of N. physaloides described in this study, were inoculated with PVA‐M. Two plants of BP and one plant of BPA were systemically infected. Mosaic, blistering and dark green islands developed on the systemically infected leaves, and flowers showed colour‐break symptoms. PVAprogeny were sequence‐characterised for the 6K2 protein and viral genome‐linked protein (VPg) encoding regions known to control the long distance movement of PVA in N. physaloides. All virus progeny (designated as PVA‐Mm) in the systemically infected leaves of the plants inoculated with PVA‐M contained only a single amino acid substitution (Vail 16Met) in the central part of VPg due to a nucleotide substitution G6033A, as compared to PVA‐M. Other PVA isolates that infected N. physaloides systemically also contained Metll6 in VPg. In a previous study using chimeric viruses, Metl16 in VPg was shown to be a major determinant for vascular movement of PVA in N. physaloides, and this study reveals that the mutation for Metl16 can occur in vivo during replication of the avirulent PVA‐M in infected plants. Immunolocalisation studies on BP and BPA plants showed that the pods (berries) and seed coat contained PVA‐Mm in the developing seeds, but no virus was detected in embryons. Up to 27% of the mature seeds contained PVA‐Mm but no transmission to seedlings was observed in a total of 450 seeds tested, and no test plants were infected following mechanical inoculation with extracts prepared from the seeds. 相似文献

CO2 fixation was studied in a lichen, Xanthoria parietina, kept in continuous light, and with cyclic changes in light intensity, dark period or temperature. The diurnal and seasonal courses of CO2 exchange were followed. The rate of net photosynthesis was observed to fall from morning to evening, and this decline was more pronounced in winter than in summer. The maximal net photosynthetic rate, 223 ng CO2g-1dws-1, occured in winter and the minimum, 94 ng CO2g-1dws-1, late in spring. The light compensation point in summer was four times as high as in winter. In continuous light (180 or 90 mol photons m-2s-1, 15°C) net photosynthesis decreased noticeably during one week, falling below the level maintained in a 12 h light: 12 h dark cycle. Photosynthetic activity did not decrease, however, in lichens held in continuous light (90 mol photons m-2s-1) with cyclic changes of temperature (12 h 20 °C: 12 h 5 °C). Active photosynthesis was also maintained in light of cyclically changing intensity (12 h: 12 h, 15 °C) when night-time light was at least 75% lower than illumination by day. A dark period of 4 hours in a 24-h light:dark cycle was sufficient to keep CO2 fixation at the control level. It seems that plants need an unproductive period during the day to survive and this can be induced by fluctuations in light and/or temperature. 相似文献

Cultures of the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardii can be synchronized by light/dark cycling not only under photoautotrophic but also under mixotrophic growth conditions. We observed that cultures synchronized in the presence of acetate continue to divide synchronously for one cell-cycle period when transferred to heterotrophic growth conditions. This finding enabled us to investigate the differential effects of light on cell growth and cell division. When cells were exposed to continuous light at the beginning of the growth period they entered the division phase earlier than dark-grown cells as a consequence of an increased growth rate. Illumination at the end of the growth period, however, caused a considerable delay in cell division and an extended growth period. The light-induced delay in cell division was also observed in the presence of 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (DCMU), an inhibitor of photosystem II. This finding demonstrates that cell division is directly influenced by a light/dard-responsive cell-cycle switch rather than by light/dark-dependent changes in energy metabolism. The importance of this light/dark control to the regulation of the Chlamydomonas cell cycle was investigated in comparison with other control mechanisms (size control, time control). We found that the light/dard-responsive cell-cycle switch regulates the transition from G1-to S-phase. This control mechanism is effective in cells which have attained the commitment to at least one round of DNA replication and division but have not attained the maximal cell mass which initiates cell division in the light.Abbreviations dCTP

The labeling patterns in malic acid from dark 13CO2 fixation in seven species of succulent plants with Crassulacean acid metabolism were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry. Only singly labeled malic-acid molecules were detected and on the average, after 12–14 h dark 13CO2 fixation the ratio of [4-13C] to [1-13C] label was 2:1. However the 4-C carboxyl contained from 72 to 50% of the label depending on species and temperature. The 13C enrichment of malate and fumarate was similar. These data confirm those of W. Cockburn and A. McAuley (1975, Plant Physiol. 55, 87–89) and indicate fumarase randomization is responsible for movement of label to 1-C malic acid following carboxylation of phosphoenolpyruvate. The extent of randomization may depend on time and on the balance of malic-acid fluxes between mitochondria and vacuoles. The ratio of labeling in 4-C to 1-C of malic acid which accumulated following 13CO2 fixation in the dark did not change during deacidification in the light and no doubly-labeled molecules of malic acid were detected. These results indicate that further fumarase randomization does not occur in the light, and futile cycling of decarboxylation products of [13C] malic acid (13CO2 or [1-13C]pyruvate) through phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase does not occur, presumably because malic acid inhibits this enzyme in the light in vivo. Short-term exposure to 13CO2 in the light after deacidification leads to the synthesis of singly and multiply labeled malic acid in these species, as observed by E.W. Ritz et al. (1986, Planta 167, 284–291). In the shortest times, only singly-labeled [4-13C]malate was detected but this may be a consequence of the higher intensity and better detection statistics of this ion cluster during mass spectrometry. We conclude that both phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (EC 4.1.1.32) and ribulose-1,5-biphosphate carboxylase (EC 4.1.1.39) are active at this time.Abbreviations CAM

Gibberellins (GAs) A17, A19, A20, A29, A44, 2OH-GA44 (tentative) and GA29-catabolite were identified in 21-day-old seeds of Pisum sativum cv. Alaska (tall). These GAs are qualitatively similar to those in the dwarf cultivar Progress No. 9 with the exception of GA19 which does not accumulate in Progress seeds. There was no evidence for the presence of 3-hydroxylated GAs in 21 day-old Alaska seeds. Dark-grown shoots of the cultivar Alaska contein GA1, GA8, GA20, GA29, GA8-catabolite and GA29-catabolite. Dark-grown shoots of the cultivar Progress No.9 contain GA8, GA20, GA29 and GA29-catabolite, and the presence of GA1 was strongly indicated. Quantitation using GAs labelled with stable isotope showed the level of GA1 in dark-grown shoots of the two cultivars to be almost identical, whilst the levels of GA20, GA29 and GA29-catabolite were significantly lower in Alaska than in Progress No. 9. The levels of these GAs in dark-grown shoots were 102- to 103-fold less than the levels in developing seeds. The 2-epimer of GA29 is present in dark-grown-shoot extracts of both cultivars and is not thought to be an artefact.Abbreviations cv
