Synopsis The development of photobehavioural responses in brook (Salvelinus fontinalis) and lake (S. namaycush) charr was studied by monitoring the intrasubstrate movements and concurrent photoresponse behaviour of incubated embryos and alevins. Photoresponse behaviour of both F-1 hybrids of the parent species was also recorded. All embryos initially moved downward in the substrate, however brook charr descended farther and faster into the substrate than did lake charr. Photoresponse tests demonstrated a similar pattern of photoresponse transformation from a photonegative to a photopositive state in both species. However, photoresponse reversal was faster, more extensive and occurred later in brook charr than in lake charr. Patterns of photoresponse change in F-1 hybrids were intermediate between those of the parent species. Photoresponse shifts preceded the onset of alevin emergence in both species. occurring when differential development of various morphological characters existed. Developmental states of characters were synchronously maximal towards the end of alevin emergence. Intermediate measures of morphological development were observed for F-1 hybrids. Possible functions and mechanisms of photoresponse transitions are discussed in relation to ecological differences between the species.  相似文献

Mast‐seeding plants often produce high seed crops the year after a warm spring or summer, but the warm‐temperature model has inconsistent predictive ability. Here, we show for 26 long‐term data sets from five plant families that the temperature difference between the two previous summers (ΔT) better predicts seed crops. This discovery explains how masting species tailor their flowering patterns to sites across altitudinal temperature gradients; predicts that masting will be unaffected by increasing mean temperatures under climate change; improves prediction of impacts on seed consumers; demonstrates that strongly masting species are hypersensitive to climate; explains the rarity of consecutive high‐seed years without invoking resource constraints; and generates hypotheses about physiological mechanisms in plants and insect seed predators. For plants, ΔT has many attributes of an ideal cue. This temperature‐difference model clarifies our understanding of mast seeding under environmental change, and could also be applied to other cues, such as rainfall.  相似文献

The American eel (Anguilla rostrata) is an imperilled fish hypothesized to use conspecific cues, in part, to coordinate long-distance migration during their multistage life history. Here, holding water and tissue from multiple American eel life stages was collected and analysed for the presence, profile and concentration of bile acids. Distinct bile acid profiles were identified in glass, elver, yellow eel and silver eel holding waters using ultraperformance liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry and principal component analysis. Taurochenodeoxycholic acid, taurodeoxycholic acid, cholic acid, deoxycholic acid, taurolithocholic acid and taurocholic acid were detected in whole tissue of American glass eels and elvers, and in liver, intestine and gallbladder samples of late-stage yellow eels. Bile acids were not a major component of silver eel washings or tissue. This study is novel because little was previously known about bile acids produced and emitted into the environment by American eels. Future behavioural studies could evaluate whether any bile acids produced by American eels influence conspecific migratory behaviour.  相似文献

I document a genetic basis for parallel evolution of life-history phenotypes in the livebearing fish Brachyrhaphis rhabdophora from northwestern Costa Rica. In previous work, I showed that populations of B. rhabdophora that co-occur with predators attain maturity at smaller sizes than populations that live in predator-free environments. I also demonstrated that this pattern of phenotypic divergence in life histories was independently repeated in at least five isolated drainages. However, life-history phenotypes measured from wild-caught fish could be attributed to environmental effects rather than to genetic differences among populations. In the present study, I reared male fish from four populations (two that co-occur with predators and two from predator-free environments) under four sets of environmental conditions. The pattern of phenotypic divergence in maturation size documented in the field between populations collected from different predation environments persisted after two generations in the laboratory. I also found a genetic basis for differences between populations in the age at which males attain maturity and in growth rates. By rearing fish in four different common environments, I tested for phenotypic plasticity in male life-history traits in response to nonlethal exposure to predators. There was a significant delay in the onset of sexual maturity in fish exposed to predators relative to those in the control, but no differences among treatments in size at maturity or growth rates. These results, coupled with previous work on B. rhabdophora, demonstrate a repeated pattern of parallel evolutionary divergence among genetically isolated populations that is strongly associated with predation.  相似文献

  • 1 We examined the predator‐avoidance behaviour, exhibited in response to chemical cues, of two populations of the snail Physella heterostropha pomila. Snails were subjected to four treatments simulating different degrees of predation risk: control water (low risk), or water from tanks containing nonforaging crayfish (intermediate risk), crushed conspecifics (high risk) or crayfish consuming conspecifics (high risk). Data were analysed using three‐way ANOVA models (population × predator chemicals × injured conspecific chemicals).
  • 2 Physella increased its avoidance behaviour as risk increased. Crayfish cue elicited a significantly greater response than from controls. Cues from injured conspecifics elicited the strongest response.
  • 3 Physella exhibited several types of avoidance behaviour, including burial into the substratum, moving to the water surface, and crawling out of the water. The type of cue present influenced response type. Cues from crayfish reduced burial and increased movement to the water surface or out of the water. Cues from injured‐conspecifics significantly increased crawling completely out of the water.
  • 4 The two populations differed in the type and degree of response exhibited. One population exhibited significantly greater ‘reactivity’ (i.e. any avoidance behaviour) in response to foraging crayfish, and more burial and crawl‐out behaviours were exhibited in high‐risk treatments.
