The behaviour of queen honeybees and their attendants   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Abstract. The behaviour of queen and worker honeybees (Apis mellifera L.) was observed using small colonies in observation hives. Workers paid more attention to queens which had been mated for 2 months or more than to those which were newly mated; virgin queens received least attention. Queens received most attention when they were stationary and least when they were walking over the comb; virgin queens were most active. Queen cells had as many attendants as virgin queens and queen larvae were inspected almost continuously. The queen pheromone component 9–oxo-trans-2–decenoic acid stimulated 'court' behaviour when presented on small polyethylene blocks, but workers responded aggressively to complete extracts of queens' heads. Both the heads and abdomens of mated queens received much attention from court workers but the abdomens were palpated by more workers for longer and were licked much more. The queens' thoraces were least attended. Abdominal tergites posterior to tergite glands were licked for longer than those anterior to the glands. Only worker bees very near to the queen reacted to her and joined her 'court'.
No evidence was found of a diel periodicity in the behaviour of a queen or her 'court'. During the winter the queen's court was smaller than in summer and she walked less and laid fewer eggs. When colonies were fed with sucrose syrup in winter, their queens laid more eggs and workers reared more brood but there was no change in the attention received by the queens.
The implications of these findings for the secretion and distribution of queen pheromones are discussed.  相似文献

以考证清冷枚《避暑山庄图》创作年代为目的,旨在深入研究借鉴康乾时期避暑山庄皇家园林风格特色。通过比对康熙朝沈嵛《避暑山庄三十六景图》和乾隆朝《钦定热河志·避暑山庄总图》等清代宫廷绘画史料,对以往冷枚《避暑山庄图》创作年代的“定论”提出异议。分析冷枚采用夸大主体、舍弃客体的画法,推断其《避暑山庄图》是以表现乾隆纪念其祖康熙对他眷顾提携之恩的“万壑松风”之“纪恩堂”为创作对象。查阅翻译“内务府造办处”等清史汉、满2种语言文献,进而证明冷枚《避暑山庄图》与沈嵛《避暑山庄三十六景图》分别创作于不同年代。  相似文献

Abstract 1. Crypsis is one of the main defences that insects use to avoid predators, and both the juveniles and adults of many geometrid moths are remarkable in their ability to blend into different host backgrounds. The larvae of Synchlora frondaria have two methods to achieve crypsis: phenotypic plasticity in colouration that enable them to hide more effectively on their host plants, and a self‐decorating behaviour whereby the larvae camouflage themselves with materials from their host plants. 2. Larvae of Synchlora frondaria reared on three different host plants showed systematic differences in relative growth rate, survivorship and larval colouration. 3. Larval colouration varied across diet treatments in a way that was consistent with diet‐induced phenotypic plasticity, and larvae also exhibited characteristic decorating behaviour on all three hosts. 4. Larvae showed highest survivorship on Heterotheca subaxillaris (Asteraceae), and had significantly higher relative growth rates on H. subaxillaris (Asteraceae) and Lantana camara (Verbenaceae) than on Bejaria racemosa (Ericaceae). 5. Synchlora frondaria provides an example of a species where both decorating behaviour and phenotypic plasticity in larval colouration produce a cryptic form that is remarkably responsive to its background.  相似文献

This research systematically profiled the global N6-methyladenosine modification pattern of circular RNAs (circRNAs) in glioblastoma (GBM). Based on RNA methylation sequencing (MeRIP sequencing or N6-methyladenosine sequencing) and RNA sequencing, we described the N6-methyladenosine modification status and gene expression of circRNAs in GBM and normal brain tissues. N6-methyladenosine–related circRNAs were immunoprecipitated and validated by real-time quantitative PCR. Bioinformatics analysis and related screening were carried out. Compared with those of the NC group, the circRNAs from GBM exhibited 1370 new N6-methyladenosine peaks and 1322 missing N6-methyladenosine peaks. Among the loci associated with altered N6-methyladenosine peaks, 1298 were up-regulated and 1905 were down-regulated. The N6-methyladenosine level tended to be positively correlated with circRNA expression. Bioinformatics analysis was used to predict the biological function of N6-methyladenosine–modified circRNAs and the corresponding signalling pathways. In addition, through PCR validation combined with clinical data mining, we identified five molecules of interest (BUB1, C1S, DTHD1, F13A1 and NDC80) that could be initial candidates for further study of the function and mechanism of N6-methyladenosine–mediated GBM development. In conclusion, our findings demonstrated the N6-methyladenosine modification pattern of circRNAs in human GBM, revealing the possible roles of N6-methyladenosine–mediated novel noncoding RNAs in the origin and progression of GBM.  相似文献

Endo-β1,4-xylanases (xylanases) hydrolyse the β1,4 glycosidic bonds in the backbone of xylan. Although xylanases from glycoside hydrolase family 11 (GH11) have been extensively studied, several issues remain unresolved. Thus, the mechanism by which these enzymes hydrolyse decorated xylans is unclear and the structural basis for the variation in catalytic activity within this family is unknown. Furthermore, the mechanism for the differences in the inhibition of fungal GH11 enzymes by the wheat protein XIP-I remains opaque. To address these issues we report the crystal structure and biochemical properties of the Neocallimastix patriciarum xylanase NpXyn11A, which displays unusually high catalytic activity and is one of the few fungal GH11 proteins not inhibited by XIP-I. Although the structure of NpXyn11A could not be determined in complex with substrates, we have been able to investigate how GH11 enzymes hydrolyse decorated substrates by solving the crystal structure of a second GH11 xylanase, EnXyn11A (encoded by an environmental DNA sample), bound to ferulic acid-1,5-arabinofuranose-α1,3-xylotriose (FAX3). The crystal structure of the EnXyn11A-FAX3 complex shows that solvent exposure of the backbone xylose O2 and O3 groups at subsites −3 and +2 allow accommodation of α1,2-linked 4-methyl-D-glucuronic acid and L-arabinofuranose side chains. Furthermore, the ferulated arabinofuranose side chain makes hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions at the +2 subsite, indicating that the decoration may represent a specificity determinant at this aglycone subsite. The structure of NpXyn11A reveals potential −3 and +3 subsites that are kinetically significant. The extended substrate-binding cleft of NpXyn11A, compared to other GH11 xylanases, may explain why the Neocallimastix enzyme displays unusually high catalytic activity. Finally, the crystal structure of NpXyn11A shows that the resistance of the enzyme to XIP-I is not due solely to insertions in the loop connecting β strands 11 and 12, as suggested previously, but is highly complex.  相似文献

Undergraduates at elite universities in the US and UK are, according to Dr Warikoo, conflicted about the relation of racial diversity to meritocracy. In the US, white students view racial minorities as academically less qualified but as providing a diversity benefit; UK students view minorities as equal members of a meritocracy but turn a blind eye to racial disparities on and off campus. What Warikoo’s narrative overlooks is the role played by differences between the US and the UK in the educational paths and testing regimes that produce these disparate mentalities. Although 40 per cent of America’s colleges offer test-optional admissions, some like Harvard still require SAT/ACT scores. The SAT/ACT are predictively weak and biased, stigmatizing minorities as underperformers. Test biases and the predictive superiority of high school grades are not widely understood. Warikoo’s proposal to blow up meritocracy with an admissions lottery is to be applauded.  相似文献

Both laboratory experiments and field observations were usedto examine the prey-attraction hypothesis for the function ofthe silk decoration on the orb web of Octonoba sybotides. Thereflectance spectrum of the decorative silk showed that thedecorations reflect relatively more ultraviolet (UV) light.Choice experiments were conducted using Drosophila melanogaster,a common prey species of the spider, to determine whether webswith silk decoration attract more flies than undecorated webs.The choice experiment showed that webs with silk decorationattract more flies in light that includes UV rays. However,flies choose their flight direction randomly in light withoutUV rays. This suggests that the silk decoration might attract preyinsects that tend to fly toward UV-reflecting objects. Fieldobservations comparing the prey capture rate between webs withand without a silk decoration showed that more prey are caughtin decorated webs. In this study, no difference between thetwo forms of silk decoration, linear and spiral, was detectedeither in prey attraction in the choice experiment or in theprey capture rate in the field observations.  相似文献

Actin filaments were identified in the epithelial cells of rat uterus following detergent extraction and decoration of microfilaments (MF) with myosin subfragment 1 (S1). MF connections with cytoplasmic organelles and the apical plasma membrane are also described. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the regular microvilli of non-pregnant, oestrous animals contain several decorated MF with rootlets descending into a densely filamentous terminal web. Following mating, the actin cytoskeleton was examined on days 1, 3 and 6 of pregnancy. In this period, the irregular projections that replace MV assumed an underlying, dense network of decorated MF, whilst smoother surfaces displayed few cytoplasmic filaments. At the time of blastocyst implantation, a structured terminal web was no longer present. Structural details were revealed concerning the contents of large, bleb-like projections found on the apical surface.  相似文献
