The major factors thought to control the distribution of associations on the sea cliffs in Britain are discussed in relation to the zonation of cliff vegetation, and some experiments to investigate the effects of these factors are described. The seeds of the maritime cliff species are able to germinate in higher salinities than those of closely related inland species.Relative growth rates of maritime cliff species indicate stimulation at low salinities over non-saline conditions, and less reduction in growth at higher salinities than those of closely related inland species.Increasing salinity reduces both photosynthesis and dark respiration in Lavatera arborea. Mesophyll and stomatal resistances are increased while transpiration is reduced. The distribution of ions within Lavatera arborea grown at different salinities indicates differential accumulation between young leaves, old leaves and roots.Nomenclature follows Clapham, Tutin & Warburg (1962).  相似文献

In coastal cliffs consisting of Pliocene fine‐grained clastic sediments at El Rompido, Huelva, Spain we discovered around the high water line an extensive zone of about 1.5 m in height burrows that were made by up to 4 mm long isopods Paragnathia formica (Hesse) and small 5 mm long staphylinid beetles (Bledius cf. corniger Rosenhauer). The burrowing zone was crowded with irregular burrows 2–5 mm in diameter and extended some 5 cm deep in the cliff. The base of the cliff showed a clear (bio)erosional notch due to this burrowing activity, comparable to those produced by marine boring and scraping organisms in, for example, calcareous rocks. This indicates that the activity of Paragnathia and Bledius helps in eroding the cliffs, a phenomenon not published earlier as far as we know. A comparable but less extensive burrowed zone was found farther upstream near Cartaya. Their presence around the high tide zone also might prove these burrows to be good markers of former high tide lines in older cliffs.  相似文献

The swallow bug (Oeciacus vicarius) is the only known vector for Buggy Creek virus (BCRV), an alphavirus that circulates in cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) and house sparrows (Passer domesticus) in North America. We discovered ants (Crematogaster lineolata and Formica spp.) preying on swallow bugs at cliff swallow colonies in western Nebraska, U.S.A. Ants reduced the numbers of visible bugs on active swallow nests by 74‐90%, relative to nests in the same colony without ants. Ant predation on bugs had no effect on the reproductive success of cliff swallows inhabiting the nests where ants foraged. Ants represent an effective and presumably benign way of controlling swallow bugs at nests in some colonies. They may constitute an alternative to insecticide use at sites where ecologists wish to remove the effects of swallow bugs on cliff swallows or house sparrows. By reducing bug numbers, ant presence may also lessen BCRV transmission at the spatial foci (bird colony sites) where epizootics occur. The effect of ants on swallow bugs should be accounted for in studying variation among sites in vector abundance.  相似文献

As a result of the construction of a storm-surge barrier across the mouth of the Oosterschelde (SW Netherlands) in 1987, the tidal range and mean high water level in the estuary have been reduced permanently to about 88% of their original values. During the final stage of construction (1985–1987) the tidal range and mean high water level were reduced even further for more than 18 months, by up to about 65% of their original values. This paper describes the consequences of these reductions for some abiotic aspects of the salt marshes.Strong ripening of the soil, especially in basins of the middle high salt marshes, resulted in the soils in these basins having more or less the dry nature of levees. This may cause moisture deficits for the vegetation during dry periods locally, and may lead locally to acidification of the soil as a result of oxidation of pyrite.Erosion of the edges of the salt marshes has increased in many places since 1986, both due to lowering of the surface level of the foreland, causing wave action to affect the marsh cliff more strongly than before, and weakening of cliff strength as a consequence of desiccation of the salt marsh soil and subsequent withering of plants and plant roots. In addition, the gradual salt marsh gradients have decreased on a large scale, as a consequence of increased wave attack and frost damage to Spartina. Finally, also due to desiccation and plant withering, levees have degraded and eroded, forming shoulders in the creeks.Settling, especially in the basins, has steepened and narrowed the height gradients between basin and levee.  相似文献

Currently available volumes of compounds and biological activity data enable large-scale analyses of compound promiscuity (multi-target activity). To aid in the exploration of structure-promiscuity relationships, promiscuity cliffs (PCs) were introduced previously. In analogy to activity cliffs, PCs were defined as pairs of structurally analogous compounds with large differences in the number of targets they are active against. Hence, PCs reveal small chemical modifications that are implicated in promiscuity. As introduced originally, PCs were identified by applying the matched molecular pair formalism and were thus confined to changes at a single substitution site. Herein, PCs with multiple substitution sites are introduced and a pilot study on a large collection of protein kinase inhibitors is reported, which provide excellent test cases for promiscuity analysis. For dual-site PCs (dsPCs), which dominated the distribution of multi-site PCs, an extended data structure was generated comprising a dsPC and two single-site analogs accounting for individual substitutions. Using a canonical representation, extended dsPCs are intuitive and easy to interpret from a chemical perspective. The analog quartet representing an extended dsPC is rich in structure-promiscuity relationship information and makes it possible to evaluate the potential interplay of chemical modifications implicated in promiscuity. Furthermore, extended dsPCs provide insights into possible experimental causes of apparent differences in analog promiscuity such as varying test frequencies. Hence, the newly introduced PC format should be of interest for exploring origins of compound promiscuity in medicinal chemistry and for formulating experimentally testable target hypotheses for analogs.  相似文献

A challenge in managing vector-borne zoonotic diseases in human and wildlife populations is predicting where epidemics or epizootics are likely to occur, and this requires knowing in part the likelihood of infected insect vectors dispersing pathogens from existing infection foci to novel areas. We measured prevalence of an arbovirus, Buggy Creek virus, in dispersing and resident individuals of its exclusive vector, the ectoparasitic swallow bug (Oeciacus vicarius), that occupies cliff swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) colonies in western Nebraska. Bugs colonizing new colony sites and immigrating into established colonies by clinging to the swallows’ legs and feet had significantly lower virus prevalence than bugs in established colonies and those that were clustering in established colonies before dispersing. The reduced likelihood of infected bugs dispersing to new colony sites indicates that even heavily infected sites may not always export virus to nearby foci at a high rate. Infected arthropods should not be assumed to exhibit the same dispersal or movement behaviour as uninfected individuals, and these differences in dispersal should perhaps be considered in the epidemiology of vector-borne pathogens such as arboviruses.  相似文献

Determining the degree of genetic variability and spatial structure of arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) may help in identifying where strains that potentially cause epidemics or epizootics occur. Genetic diversity in arboviruses is assumed to reflect relative mobility of their vertebrate hosts (and invertebrate vectors), with highly mobile hosts such as birds leading to genetic similarity of viruses over large areas. There are no empirical studies that have directly related host or vector movement to virus genetic diversity and spatial structure. Using the entire E2 glycoprotein-coding region of 377 Buggy Creek virus isolates taken from cimicid swallow bugs (Oeciacus vicarius), the principal invertebrate vector for this virus, we show that genetic diversity between sampling sites could be predicted by the extent of movement by transient cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) between nesting colonies where the virus and vectors occur. Pairwise F(ST) values between colony sites declined significantly with increasing likelihood of a swallow moving between those sites per 2-day interval during the summer nesting season. Sites with more bird movement between them had virus more similar genetically than did pairs of sites with limited or no bird movement. For one virus lineage, Buggy Creek virus showed greater haplotype and nucleotide diversity at sites that had high probabilities of birds moving into or through them during the summer; these sites likely accumulated haplotypes by virtue of frequent virus introductions by birds. Cliff swallows probably move Buggy Creek virus by transporting infected bugs on their feet. The results provide the first empirical demonstration that genetic structure of an arbovirus is strongly associated with host/vector movement, and suggest caution in assuming that bird-dispersed arboviruses always have low genetic differentiation across different sites.  相似文献

In any biogeographical region, cliffs shelter a larger number of relict species than do the surrounding areas. To develop effective conservation strategies, experimental studies are needed. We focused on Mediterranean coastal cliffs and on Primula palinuri Petagna, an endangered narrow-endemic plant, included in the IUCN Red List and chosen as a key species. The hypothesis was that light intensity and soil water availability could affect survival and growth of juvenile plants. To avoid the bias of other cliff environmental factors and to overcome problems of cliff site inaccessibility, we performed an ex-situ experiment. The effect of two light regimes and two soil water availability conditions on survival and morpho-functional traits were analysed. Plants grown under reduced light intensity and wet soil showed no reduction in survival and performed very well in terms of growth and storage accumulation. By contrast, full light and dry soil proved to be detrimental conditions. Overall results suggested that cliff environmental conditions play an important role in conservation of narrow-endemic species. The decreasing trend of the already severely fragmented populations of P. palinuri and the ongoing increasing aridity is likely to contribute to a further reduction of the already narrow distribution this cliff relict species.  相似文献
