The cirrus pouch of Cylindrotaenia hickmani was examined by transmission electron microscopy. The cirrus pouch is a complex organ consisting of muscular, nervous and epithelial tissues. Muscles forming the cirrus pouch wall contain large myocytons that merge with myofibrils. Muscles supplying the gonadoducts within the pouch consist of small myocytons which are connected to associated myofibrils by elongate processes. Discrete neuromuscular junctions are commonly seen in both muscles. Two cells, thought to be neurons, are present in the pouch. The abundance of nervous tissue in the pouch is suggestive of a high level of neural control of the activity of that organ. The cirrus is lined by filamentous, hook-like and blade-like microtriches. Ciliated sensory receptors are found among the microtriches lining the cirrus. Epithelial cytons associated with proximal regions of the cirrus produce a material which is secreted from the syncytial cytoplasm of the cirrus. Intercellular junctions, resembling gap junctions, are common among the cells associated with the cirrus. The complexity of the cirrus pouch of C. hickmani suggests that this organ may prove valuable for studies on neuromuscular physiology and cellular interactions in cestodes.  相似文献

Rediae, cercariae, and adults of Ribeiroia marini were examined using a scanning electron microscope to determine the types of tegumental sensory structures and their locations. Sensory structures were observed among numerous tegumental folds in the area immediately surrounding the mouth of the rediae. These sensory structures are similar in appearance, location and fine structure to sensory structures described from the anterior tips of rediae known to be predacious on the sporocysts of Schistosoma mansoni. These uniciliated structures may function as chemoreceptors to aid the redia in migration through snail tissue. Five types of sensory structures bearing one, two, or multiple cilia were distinguishable on the cercariae. These structures were located on and around the oral sucker, dorsal and ventral body surfaces and on the tail. They may be used by the cercariae to locate the intermediate host fish and to find suitable sites within the lateral line scales for encystment. The ventral surface of the adult fluke is covered with spines and shows an absence of sensory structures on the general body surface. Sensory structures were seen in the area surrounding the oral and ventral suckers. The extended cirrus organ has a folded tegument, but lacks spines or sensory structures.

The slender filefish is a master of adaptive camouflage and can change its appearance within 1–3 s. Videos and photographs of this animal's cryptic body patterning and behavior were collected in situ under natural light on a Caribbean coral reef. We present an ethogram of body patterning components that includes large‐ and small‐scale spots, stripes and bars that confer a variety of cryptic patterns amidst a range of complex backgrounds. Field images were analyzed to investigate two aspects of camouflage effectiveness: (1) the degree of colour resemblance between animals and their nearby visual stimuli; and (2) the visibility of each fish's actual body outline vs. its illusory outline. Most animals more closely matched the colour of nearby visual stimuli than that of the surrounding background. Three‐dimensional dermal flaps complement the melanophore skin patterns by enhancing the complexity of the fish's physical skin texture to disguise its actual body shape, and the morphology of these structures was studied. The results suggest that the body patterns, skin texture, postures and swimming orientations putatively hinder both the detection and recognition of the fish by potential visual predators. Overall, the rapid speed of change of multiple patterns, colour blending with nearby backgrounds, and the physically complicated edge produced by dermal flaps effectively camouflage this animal among soft corals and macroalgae in the Caribbean Sea.  相似文献

The integument of ribbon worms in the order Heteronemertea is distinct from the integuments in the other taxa of nemerteans due to the presence of a special subepidermal glandular layer, the cutis. Among heteronemerteans, the ultrastructure of the cutis has been studied only in the Lineus ruber species complex. In the current study, ultrastructural (transmission electron microscopy) and histochemical studies of the epidermis and the cutis of Micrura bella from the basal Lineage A of the family Lineidae were performed. The epidermis consisted of ciliated and serous gland cells and is separated from the cutis by a layer of the subepidermal extracellular matrix; the basal lamina was not detected. The cutis comprised musculature, two types of mucous and four types of granular gland cells, and pigment cells with four types of granules. In the cutis of juvenile worms, type II granular gland cells and type II mucous cells were not observed. The integument of the caudal cirrus consisted of ciliated and serous gland cells and two intraepidermal lateral nerve cords; the cutis was absent. The compositions of the integument glands of M. bella and the L. ruber species complex are similar, except for the presence of type IV granular gland cells with narrow rod-shaped and lamellated granules exhibiting an alternating dark and light transverse layers and type II mucous cells found only in M. bella.  相似文献
