A group of fourteen men (73 ± 5 yr of age), and eighteen women (77 ± 7 yr of age) institutionalized at the Berceni Clinical Hospital, Bucharest, Romania, were studied over a 24-hr span once during each season (winter, spring, summer and fall). All subjects followed a diurnal activity pattern with rest at night and ate three meals per day with breakfast at about 0830, lunch at about 1300 and dinner at about 1830. The meals were similar, although not identical for all subjects during all seasons. On each day of sampling blood was collected at 4-hr intervals over a 24-hr span. Seventeen hormonal variables were determined by radioimmunoassay. Statistically significant circadian rhythms were detected and quantitated by population mean cosinor analysis in pooled data from all four seasons in both sexes for ACTH, aldosterone, Cortisol, C-peptide, dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEA-S), immunoreactive insulin, prolactin, 17-OH progesterone, testosterone, total T4 and TSH. In women, estradiol and progesterone also were determined and showed a circadian rhythm during all seasons. Total T, and FSH showed circadian rhythm detection by cosinor analysis in the men only; LH showed no consistent circadian rhythm as group phenomenon in men or women.

A circannual rhythm was detected using the circadian means of each subject at each season as input for the population mean cosinor in the women for ACTH, C-peptide, DHEA-S, FSH, LH, progesterone, 17-OH progesterone and TSH. In the men, a circannual rhythm was detected for ACTH, FSH, insulin, LH, testosterone and T3. There were phase differences between men and women in ACTH, FSH and LH. In those functions in which both the circadian and circannual rhythms were statistically significant, a comparison of the amplitudes showed in the women a higher circannual rather than circadian amplitude for DHEA-S. In 17-OH progesterone, TSH and C-peptide, the circadian amplitude in women was larger. In men, the circannual amplitude of T3 was larger than the circadian amplitude and in insulin the circadian amplitude was larger than the circannual amplitude. There was no statistically significant difference between the circadian and circannual amplitudes in the women in ACTH and progesterone and in the men in ACTH and testosterone.  相似文献

Heat was used to break up the mucilage-bound colonies of the blue-green alga, Microcystis aeruginosa Kütz. emend. Elenkin, for cell counting. Samples were heated in a water bath at 80°C for 5–10 min, then agitated in a Vortex mixer for 30–60 s. The treatment separated cells completely and reaggregation of cells did not occur. ABSTRACT

Circadian and circannual rhythms influence not only the environment, but also human physiology. In times of increasing numbers of couples struggling with infertility, and thus increasing demand for successful assisted reproduction, the aim of our study was to evaluate circadian and circannual rhythms and their association with semen quality. A total of 12 245 semen samples from 7068 men, collected at the andrology laboratory of the Department of Reproductive Endocrinology, University Hospital Zurich, between 1994 and 2015, were uniformly analysed in terms of sperm concentration, total sperm count, progressive motility and normal morphology. On the basis of these four parameters, we retrospectively examined the circadian and circannual changes of semen quality. The Mann–Whitney U test and multiple linear regression analysis were used for the statistical evaluation. The semen samples collected in the early morning before 7:30 a.m. showed the highest levels in sperm concentration, total sperm count and normal morphology, all with statistical significance. Progressive motility did not show any significant alterations based on circadian rhythm. Furthermore, a significant increase in sperm concentration and total sperm count was found in spring, with significant decreases in the summer. The highest percentage of normal morphology was found in summer. For progressive motility, no significant seasonal variation could be demonstrated. Male semen quality varies with both circadian and circannual rhythms. Collection of semen in the early morning, where semen quality was highest, can be used to improve natural fertility as well as fertility resulting from assisted reproduction.  相似文献

Abstract

The two dominant environmental oscillations shape biology and survival of species: the day–night cycle and the succession of the seasons in the year. Organisms have adapted to anticipate these variations by evolving internal circadian (ca.- about, diem- day) and circannual clocks. The former enables the organisms to regulate physiological functions on a daily basis, and the latter on the annual basis. In mammals, the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) of the anterior hypothalamus contain master pacemaker and orchestrate peripheral clocks in synchrony with the daily 24 h light-dark cycle, while in birds circadian pacemake is an interacting system principally located in the retina, pineal and the hypothalamus. In this mini review, we discuss the role of circadian clocks in regulation of seasonal timing in higher vertebrates, with reference to birds and mammals.  相似文献

Although it is axiomatic that males and females differ in relation to many aspects of reproduction related to physiology, morphology and behaviour, relatively little is known about possible sex differences in the response to cues from the environment that control the timing of seasonal breeding. This review concerns the environmental regulation of seasonal reproduction in birds and how this process might differ between males and females. From an evolutionary perspective, the sexes can be expected to differ in the cues they use to time reproduction. Female reproductive fitness typically varies more as a function of fecundity selection, while male reproductive fitness varies more as a function sexual selection. Consequently, variation in the precision of the timing of egg laying is likely to have more serious fitness consequences for females than for males, while variation in the timing of recrudescence of the male testes and accompanying territory establishment and courtship are likely to have more serious fitness consequences for males. From the proximate perspective, sex differences in the control of reproduction could be regulated via the response to photoperiod or in the relative importance and action of supplementary factors (such as temperature, food supply, nesting sites and behavioural interactions) that adjust the timing of reproduction so that it is in step with local conditions. For example, there is clear evidence in several temperate zone avian species that females require both supplementary factors and long photoperiods in order for follicles to develop, while males can attain full gonadal size based on photoperiodic stimulation alone. The neuroendocrine basis of these sex differences is not well understood, though there are many candidate mechanisms in the brain as well as throughout the entire hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis that might be important.  相似文献

Reported single car and truck accidents due specifically to driver 'fatigue' for the 4-year span of 1980-1983 were analyzed for 24-hr, 7-d and 1-yr patterns. Three types of data were examined: (1) accidents in rural Texas, (2) accidents only in San Antonio, the fourth largest city in Texas and (3) accident ratio (number of accidents per time interval divided by traffic volume for the interval) in this city.

A statistically significant seasonal variation of relatively low amplitude with peaks in May and July was detected only for accidents in rural areas. High-amplitude periodicities of 7 d were evident in all the data sets, with a peak on the weekend. A very prominent 24-hr pattern was detected as well, with the acrophase determined by single cosinor around 0300. A slight secondary peak in accidents, around 1500, was evident in the data from the rural areas. This secondary peak represented a 12-hr rhythm in addition to the 24-hr. Overall, features of the temporal patterns in accidents over 24 hr and over the year in urban and rural areas differed only slightly. Accident ratios yielded results similar to accident frequencies. However, with regard to the rural data, the shape of the 24-hr temporal pattern varied with driver age; older drivers exhibited a flatter curve with a more pronounced afternoon rather than early morning (around 0300) peak.  相似文献

Biological rhythmicity is presumed to be an advantageous genetic adaptation of fitness and survival value resulting from evolution of life forms in an environment that varies predictably-in-time during the 24 h, month, and year. The 24 h light/dark cycle is the prime synchronizer of circadian periodicities, and its modulation over the course of the year, in terms of daytime photoperiod length, is a prime synchronizer of circannual periodicities. Circadian and circannual rhythms have been the major research focus of most scientists. Circa-monthly rhythms triggered or synchronized by the 29.5 day lunar cycle of nighttime light intensity, or specifically the light of the full moon, although explored in waterborne and certain other species, have received far less study, perhaps because of associations with ancient mythology and/or an attitude naturalistic studies are of lesser merit than ones that entail molecular mechanisms. In this editorial, we cite our recent discovery through multidisciplinary naturalistic investigation of a highly integrated circadian, circa-monthly, and circannual time structure, synchronized by the natural ambient nyctohemeral, lunar, and annual light cycles, of the Peruvian apple cactus (C. peruvianus) flowering and reproductive processes that occur in close temporal coordination with like rhythms of the honey bee as its pollinator. This finding led us to explore the preservation of this integrated biological time structure, synchronized and/or triggered by environmental light cues and cycles, in the reproduction of other species, including Homo sapiens, and how the artificial light environment of today in which humans reside may be negatively affecting human reproduction efficiency.  相似文献

The endocrine and gametogenic status of the testes were studied in 9 healthy adult rhesus monkeys of proven fertility throughout a one-year period. Testosterone levels were estimated by radioimmunoassay in blood samples collected at 4 h intervals over a 24 h period once a month. Semen samples and testicular biopsies were also examined once a month. A well-defined circandian rhythm was evident in serum levels of testosterone. The rhythmicity was less pronounced in February and September. The 24 h mean levels of serum testosterone were high between the months of August to March and low in the months of May to July. All animals did not uniformly respond to electro-ejaculation in April and May. Semen volume and total number of spermatozoa were maximal between September and March and least from April to August. Testicular biopsies indicated that all stages of spermatogenesis were evident between September and March and the spermatogenic activity was less evident between April and August. The contents of Sertoli cells showed a seasonal cyclicity; they were laden with lipid droplets during April to August when spermatogenesis was quiescent and vacuolated during September to March when spermatogenesis was active. These studies indicate that the testing of contraceptive drugs needs to be restricted to months of September to March in male rhesus monkeys otherwise, it is possible that the naturally occurring reproductive quiscence may be attributed to the effect of the drug being tested. The data accrued from the present studies also provide quantitative information on circulating levels of testosterone which could be used as a reference background while evaluating the contraceptive drug-effects in male rhesus monkeys.  相似文献

The cell cycle distribution of bone marrow cells from the femurs of female C3H mice has been investigated by flow cytometry according to the time of the day and month of the year. Both circadian and seasonal variations were found for the different cell cycle phases as well as the total cell numbers per femur. Both the mesor, the acrophase and the amplitude of the S, G2 and (G1 + G0) phases varied significantly in some months, while in other months only insignificant rhythms were found. The relative cell cycle distribution only partly reflected variations in the total numbers of proliferating cells, since the total cell number per femur was also variable.

The total numbers of cells in DNA synthesis seem to be higher in the first part of the year, indicating increased cell proliferation during winter and spring. In this period the acrophases of DNA synthesis and G2 were in the morning, while the second half of the year showed the peak later in the day.

In general, hemopoietic cell proliferation seems to constitute a labile equilibrium with rapidly changing activities.  相似文献
