Nitrogen dioxide less than 100 ppm in air induced lipid peroxidation of liposome composed of l-palmitoyl-2-arachidonylphosphatidylcholine as assessed by thiobarbituric acid reactivity. The nitrogen dioxide-induced lipid peroxidation was enhanced by cysteine, glutathione and bovine serum albumin. While the activity of nitrogen dioxide in air to induce single strand breaks of supercoiled plasmid DNA was low, the breaking was remarkably enhanced by cysteine, glutathione and bovine serum albumin. ESR spin trapping using 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide showed that certain strong oxidant(s) were generated by interaction of nitrogen dioxide and cysteine. The spin trapping using 3,5-dibromo-4-nitrosobenzene-sulfonate suggested that sulfur-containing radicals were generated by interaction of nitrogen dioxide and cysteine or glutathione. Hence, certain sulfur-containing radicals generated by the interaction which could effectively induce lipid peroxidation and DNA strand breaks. 相似文献

Results of a comparative study of the sensitivity of the system of respiratory control to increases in the CO2 concentration and the intensity of free-radical processes in young and elderly subjects are described. It is shown that normal
(natural) aging is accompanied by a decrease in the sensitivity of the respiratory system to hypercapnic stimulation and a
parallel significant decrease in the activity of catalase in the blood of examined subjects. Mechanisms responsible for the
modifications of the sensitivity of the system of respiratory control to hypercapnia are discussed; these shifts can be at
least partly related to changes in the intensity of production of free radicals observed in elderly subjects.

We respond to a reaction of the Global Footprint Network/GFN on our 8-point criticism of the ecological footprint. We also refer to, and comment on, an associated debate in this journal between Giampietro and Saltelli, 2014a, Giampietro and Saltelli, 2014b, on the one hand, and Goldfinger et al. (2014), on the other. We conclude that criticism on the footprint is accumulating and coherent across the various studies and disciplines and among the different authors. This was the first time that Wackernagel/GFN systematically responded to our criticisms. Hence, our response contains several original elements and the resulting exchange can be seen to add value to the existing literature. It ultimately allows readers to better make up their mind about the different viewpoints on the ecological footprint. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. A non-dispersive infrared gas analyser equipped with a Luft-type sonic detector and flow-through reference cell was automated to monitor the total volume of carbon dioxide (CO2) respired by single insects or groups of insects. The infrared analyser was interfaced with an integrator for quantification, a microprocessor to control intermittent air flow through the insect respiration chambers, and a microcomputer for data storage and reduction. This technique has been used to monitor the CO2 Output of diapausing and non-diapausing mature fifth instar larvae and of developing pupae of the codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.) Regulatory reactions providing the photosynthetic apparatus with the ability to respond to variations of irradiance by changes in activities of the light and the dark stages of photosynthesis within a time range of seconds and minutes are considered in the review. At the light stage, such reactions are related to the changes in both distribution of light energy between two photosystems and probability of nonphotochemical dissipation of absorbed quanta in PSI and PSII. These regulatory reactions operate in a negative feedback mode, thus avoiding overreduction of electron transport chain and minimizing the probability of generation of reactive oxygen species. The crucial role in preventing the generation of reactive oxygen species belongs to dynamic regulation of electron transport activity despite the presence of complex system of their detoxification in chloroplasts. In dark reactions of Calvin cycle, the regulatory responses involve a positive feedback principle being related to redox regulation of activities of several enzymes, which is sensitive to the reduction status of PSI acceptor side. The complex of regulatory reactions based on negative and positive feedback principles provides prolonged functioning of a chloroplast and high stability of photosynthetic activity under various light conditions. 相似文献

Background: Although forest floor forms a large biomass pool in forested peatlands, little is known about its role in ecosystem carbon (C) dynamics. Aim: We aimed to quantify forest floor photosynthesis (P FF) and respiration (R FF) as a part of overall C dynamics in a drained peatland forest in southern Finland. Methods: We measured net forest floor CO2 exchange with closed chambers and reconstructed seasonal CO2 exchange in the prevailing plant communities. Results: The vegetation was a mosaic of plant communities that differed in CO2 exchange dynamics. The reconstructed growing season P FF was highest in the Sphagnum community and lowest in the feather moss communities. On the contrary, R FF was highest in the feather moss communities and lowest in the Sphagnum community. CO2 assimilated by the forest floor was 20–30% of the total CO2 assimilated by the forest. The forest floor was a net CO2 source to the atmosphere, because respiration from ground vegetation, tree roots and decomposition of soil organic matter exceeded the photosynthesis of ground vegetation. Conclusions: Tree stand dominates C fluxes in drained peatland forests. However, forest floor vegetation can have a noticeable role in the C cycle of peatlands drained for forestry. Experimental evidence regarding the responses of cereal aphids to rising atmospheric CO2 has been ambiguous. Some studies suggest increased population sizes under future CO2 levels, others suggest decreased population sizes, and still others suggest little or no difference. Recently, Newman et al. (2003) constructed a general mathematical model of the aphid–grass interaction to investigate whether or not we should, in fact, expect a general aphid response to rising CO2. They concluded that aphid populations are likely to be larger under future CO2 concentrations if soil N levels are high, the aphid species' nitrogen requirement is low and the aphid species' density‐dependent response in winged morph production is weak. In that model, and in field experiments, CO2 concentration influences aphid population dynamics through the effect it has on plant quality. However, future CO2 concentrations are also likely to be accompanied by higher ambient temperatures, a combination that has received little focus to date. In the present paper, the Newman et al. model is used to consider the combined effects of increased CO2 concentrations and temperature on aphid population sizes. It is concluded that, when both factors are elevated, aphid population dynamics will be more similar to current ambient conditions than expected from the results of experiments studying either factor alone.
