The floral phenology, fruit and seed production, and self-compatibility of Werauhia gladioliflora, an epiphytic bromeliad with a wide distribution, were studied in a premontane forest in the Monteverde area in Costa Rica. The species presents the pollination syndrome of chiropterophily, and it is visited by the small bats Hylonycteris underwoodi and Glossophaga commissarisi (Glossophaginae). The population flowering period extended from October to early December (end of rainy season) and seed dispersal occurred from February to April (dry season). Most plants opened a single flower per night, either every day or at one-day intervals during the flowering period. In natural conditions, the average fruit set amounted to almost half of the potential output, but individual fecundity (number of seeds) remained high. Seed number per fruit and germination capacity after artificial selfing and out-crossing treatments did not differ from natural pollination conditions. Werauhia gladioliflora exhibited high levels of autonomous self-pollination and self-compatibility at the individual and population level, characters associated with the epiphytic habitat. These reproductive traits are also associated with early colonizer species, yet life history traits, such as seed dispersal, seedling establishment success, and growth, are likely to have a major role in determining the presence of this species in the successional vegetation patches scattered over the studied premontane area.  相似文献

We tested the removal effect on nectar production in four bat‐pollinated cerrado flowers. We compared the amount of nectar after 7–12 removals with the accumulated nectar in non‐manipulated flowers after 12 h. In all, but one species, removals increased volume by 1.5–4.6 times and sugar content by 1.6–4 times, which may affect flower visitation by bats, pollen flow, and reproduction. The role of bats and sunbirds in the pollination ecology of Musa itinerans Cheesman (Musaceae) was studied in the tropical seasonal rain forests of Xishuangbanna, southern Yunnan, China. It was found that both long–tongued fruit bats (Macroglossus sobrinus) and sunbirds (Arachnothera longirostris) were effective pollinators of M. itinerans. Nectar production had two peaks, one during the day and one during night (0800–1200 h and 2000–2400 h), which allowed the two different foragers to visit at specific times. The visitation patterns of the two foragers coincided with both flowering time and nectar production. By measuring the differences in fruit weight and seed production among different bagging experiments, we found that birds and bats were equally effective as pollinators of this species.  相似文献

Floral scent in bat-pollinated plants: a case of convergent evolution   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The chemical composition of floral scent in eight bat-pollinated species belonging to six different plant families was investigated. Floral scent was collected by headspace trapping using porous adsorbents and the chemical composition determined by coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. In all species except one the floral scent was found to include sulphur-containing compounds, of which several are reported for the first time in floral scents. Three species contained mushroom-like smelling fatty acid derivatives with a C8-skeleton. Such flowers may be recognized by pollinators as humid environments in otherwise dry surroundings. The presence of similar or chemically closely related sulphur containing compounds in floral scent of bat-pollinated plant species from differing families may represent a case of convergent evolution in scent composition and an adaptation to attract this specific group of pollinators with similar sensory preferences.  相似文献

Abstract: The visitors of four syntopically occurring species of Marcgravia (M. nervosa, M. serrae, M. mexicana , and M. nepen-thoides ) in the Atlantic lowland rain forest at La Selva Biological Station in Costa Rica were observed. The four species differed in flowering phenology and morphology of inflorescences. Flowers of all species opened during the night and the stamens dropped before dawn. All species were visited by small nectar-feeding bats (Phyllostomidae: Glossophaginae). Marcgrovia nepen-thoides , with much larger nectaries, additionally attracted two species of opossums, Caluromys derbianus and Didelphis marsu-pious . Judging from the large distance between nectaries and flowers, glossophagine bats probably are inefficient pollinators of this species, and merely exploit a non-flying mammal pollination system.  相似文献

This study assesses to what extent bat pollination has acted as a selective force on pollen morphology. Earlier pollen studies have suggested convergent evolution of verrucate exine ornamentation. Furthermore pollen of bat pollinated plants has been reported to be bigger than that of plants pollinated by other means. The generality of these ideas is tested using a sample of 130 species of both bat pollinated plants and relatives with another mode of pollination. An analysis of pollen size, shape, aperture number and type, and ornamentation type of 35 plant groups in which a transition towards bat pollination occurred was performed and showed a significant effect for pollen size only. Bat pollinated plants have bigger pollen than their relatives. Pollen size was shown to correlate with style length. Pollen shape, aperture system and exine ornamentation are in general not very different in bat pollinated plants in comparison with their relatives. There is no consistent trend for rougher exines to be associated with bat pollination.  相似文献

Inflorescences of the Central American understorey palm Calyptrogyne ghiesbreghtiana offer bats fruit-like flower tissue as reward for visitation. Bats visited the inflorescences in two different modes: frugivores (Phyllostomidae: Stenodermatinae, Carolliinae) foraged on the inflorescence while perched, whereas bats that were primarily nectarivores (Phyllostomidae: Glossophaginae) also consumed flower tissue, but did so while hovering. Fruit set was significantly lower in inflorescences that had received only hovering visits, indicating that perching behaviour offers better possibilities for pollen transfer. The pollination system of C. ghiesbreghtiana is probably adapted to perching frugivorous bats with nectar-specialist Glossophagines as non-optimal participants. Seen in an evolutionary perspective the C. ghiesbreghtiana– glossophagine bat interactions may demonstrate recruitment of new pollinators from non-destructive visitors.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 80 , 281–288.  相似文献

In Samoa, field observations, experiments, and SEM micrographs of hair and feather samples indicate the dioecious lianaFreycinetia reineckei to be both chiropterophilous and ornithophilous with the principal pollinators being an endemic flying fox,Pteropus samoensis, and an endemic starling,Aplonis atrifuscus. Nutritional analysis of staminate and pistillate inflorescenses indicate qualitative and quantitative differences between the rewards offered by the two sexes. No nectar is presented, the principal pollinator rewards being fleshy bracts and pollen. As a result, staminate and bisexual inflorescenses sustain higher levels of pollinator damage, a factor which may tend to maintain dioecism within the population.  相似文献

The floral biology, reproductive system, and visitation behavior of pollinators of four species of columnar cacti, Stenocereus griseus, Pilosocereus moritzianus, Subpilocereus repandus, and Subpilocereus horrispinus, were studied in two arid zones in the north of Venezuela. Our results support the hypothesis that Venezuelan species of columnar cacti have evolved toward specialization on bat pollination. Additional information on the floral biology of a fifth species, Pilosocereus lanuginosus, was also included. All species showed the typical traits that characterize the pollination syndrome of chiropterophily. All species but Pilosocereus moritzianus were obligate outcrossers. Nectar and pollen were restricted to nocturnal floral visitors. Two species of nectar-feeding bats, Leptonycteris curasoae Miller and Glossophaga longirostris Miller, were responsible for practically all the fruit set in these cacti. Frequency of bat visitation per flower per night was highly variable within and between species of cactus, with average frequencies varying between 27 and 78 visits/flower/night. In general terms, the pattern of floral visitation through the night was significantly correlated with the pattern of nectar production and nectar sugar concentration for all species of cactus. Under natural pollination, fruit:flower ratios varied from 0.46 in Subpilocereus repandus to 0.76 in Stenocereus griseus. The efficiency of bat pollination in terms of seed:ovule ratio was high in all species, varying between 0.70 and 0.94.  相似文献

We investigated the reproductive biology, including the floral biology, pollination biology, breeding system and reproductive success, of Pachira aquatica, a native and dominant tropical tree of fresh water wetlands, throughout the coastal plain of the Gulf of Mexico. The flowers present nocturnal anthesis, copious nectar production and sugar concentration (range 18–23%) suitable for nocturnal visitors such as bats and sphingid moths. The main nocturnal visitors were bats and sphingid moths while bees were the main diurnal visitors. There were no differences in legitimate visitation rates among bats, moths and honey bees. Bats and honey bees fed mainly on pollen while moths fed on nectar, suggesting resource partitioning. Eight species of bats carried pollen but Leptonycteris yerbabuenae is probably the most effective pollinator due to its higher pollen loads. The sphingid moths Manduca rustica, Cocytius duponchel and Eumorpha satellitia were recorded visiting flowers. Hand pollination experiments indicated a predominant outcrossing breeding system. Open pollination experiments resulted in a null fruit set, indicating pollen limitation; however, mean reproductive success, according to a seasonal census, was 17 ± 3%; these contrasting results could be explained by the seasonal availability of pollinators. We conclude that P. aquatica is an outcrossing species with a pollination system originally specialized for bats and sphingid moths, which could be driven to a multimodal pollination system due to the introduction of honey bees to tropical America.  相似文献
