Concentrations of soluble aluminum (Al) and manganese (Mn) frequently reach phytotoxic levels in acid soils. While dose response relationships for these metals are well documented, the effects of combined exposure have received less attention. We have examined the effect of combinations of Al and Mn on growth and metal accumulation in Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. grown in solution culture under conditions of low ionic strength (conductivities typically < 100 µS cm−1). The nature of interaction between these metals varied with the specific physiological response, the part of the plant investigated, and the relative amount of stress imposed. Analysis of growth data provided evidence for amelioration of metal toxicity (antagonistic effects), although this effect was dose dependent. Analysis of metal content data provided evidence for antagonistic and synergistic (exacerbation of toxicity) effects, again depending on dose. Analysis of foliar symptoms also provided evidence for antagonisms and synergisms, with the nature of the response dependent on the specific physiological response and specific plant part investigated. In contrast with previous reports, evidence for antagonistic, synergistic, and multiplicative effects on growth, metal uptake, and expression of foliar symptoms have been obtained under physiologically and environmentally relevant conditions. These results suggest a more detailed analysis of the potential for interactions between metals in the environment is required.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study explored the time of day effect of balance performance, functional capacities and risk of fall in three different times in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and the association between these variations and those of RA symptoms.

Methods: A “discontinual” protocol, composed of three test sessions, carried out at 6 am, 2 pm and 10 pm was set up, in order to investigate the time of day effect of balance performance, functional capacities, risk of fall, stiffness, range of motion, swollen and painful joints in women with RA.

Results: Time Up and Go Test (TUGT), Functional Reach Test (FRT) and tinetti test scores were significantly higher (p < .01) at 6 am and at 10 pm compared to 2 pm. Stiffness, range of motion, swollen and painful joints values were significantly higher (p < .01) at 6 am and at 10 pm compared to 2 pm. A significant difference was observed on the stiffness, range of motion and swollen joints values between 6 am and 10 pm that were higher at 6 am (p < .05).

Using Pearson’s coefficient, correlations were found between RA symptom values; and TUGT, FRT and Tinetti test scores.

Conclusion: Results showed a time of day effect of balance performance, functional capacities and risk of falls in women with RA. This variation indicates an alteration of performance at 6 am and 10 pm. Fluctuations of stiffness, limited range of motion, swollen and painful joints noted are concomitant to those of balance performance, functional capacities, and risk of fall.

Etiolated bean plants were grown in intermittent light with dark intervals of shorter or longer duration, to modulate the rate of chlorophyll accumulation, relative to that of the other thylakoid components formed. We thus produced conditions under which chlorophyll becomes more or less a limiting factor. We then tested whether LHC complexes can be incorporated in the thylakoid. It was found that an equal amount of chlorophyll, formed under the same total irradiation received, may be used for the stabilization of few and large-in-size PS units containing LHC components (short dark-interval intermittent light), or for the stabilization of many and small-in-size PS units with no LHC components (long dark-interval intermittent light). The size of the PS units diminishes as the dark-interval duration is increased, with no further change after 98 minutes. The PSII/cytf ratio remains constant throughout development in intermittent light and equal to that of mature chloroplasts (PSII/cytf = 1) except in the case of very long dark-interval regimes, where about half PSII units per cytf are present. The PSII/PSI ratio was found to be correlated with the PSII unit size (the larger the size, the lower the ratio). The number of PSI units operating on the same electron transfer chain varied depending on the size of the PSII unit (the larger the PSII unit size, the more the PSI units per chain). The results suggest that it is not the chlorophyll content per se which regulates the stabilization of LHC in developing thylakoids and consequently the size of the PS units, but rather the rate by which it is accumulated, relative to that of the other thylakoid components.Abbreviations Chl Chlorophyll - CL Continuous light - CPa the reaction center complex of PSII - CPI the reaction center complex of PSI - CPIa Chlorophyll protein complex containing the CPI and the light harvesting complex of PSI - fr w fresh weight - LDC Light dark cycles - LHC-I Light-harvesting complex of PSI - LHC-II Light harvesting complex of PSII - PS photosystem - PSI photosystem I - PSII photosystem II  相似文献

This study investigated the effect of daily relaxation on concentrations of serum immunoglobulins A, G, and M and secretion rates of salivary immunoglobulin A (S-IgA). Twenty-four volunteers were randomly assigned to practice a relaxation technique daily for 3 weeks and 16 to a waiting list control condition. Blood and saliva samples were collected before and after a supervised 20-min relaxation session at the beginning and end of the 3-week practice period. S-IgA secretion rate increased significantly (p<.001) after 20 min of relaxation. A longer-term practice effect also occurred in that the increase in secretion rate in before to after relaxation samples was higher (p=.014) in subjects who had practiced relaxation once a day for 3 weeks than in waiting list control subjects practicing for the first time. Serum IgA (p<.001), IgG (p<.001), and igM (p<.05) increased significantly over the 3-week practice period. Relaxation may be a self-regulating strategy affecting both humoral and cellular divisions of the immune system.Parts of this paper were presented at the annual meeting of the Biofeedback Society of America, March 1987. Materials for the IgA assays were provided by Cooper Biomedical, Malvern, Pennsylvania.  相似文献

Summary Fifty workers from two grain elevator terminals were examined to evaluate the prevalence of respiratory symptoms and their relationship with grain dust exposure.Fifty per cent of subjects complained of respiratory symptoms (rhinitis, asthma, chronic cough and dyspnea on exertion). In 34% of the workers the ventilatory function revealed some abnormalities (slight or moderate obstruction).Twenty-two (44%) showed a positive cutaneous reaction to one or more of the allergens tested, mostly towardsDermatophagoides and storage mites. The self-measurement of PEF over 14 days in 27 workers, showed significant differences between symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects. In particular, the results obtained from the cutaneous reactions could suggest a bronchial hypereactivity, worsened by the working exposure to dusts. The monitoring of PEF appears to be a simple and useful method for investigating the relationship between respiratory symptoms and the working environment.  相似文献

Thirty-eight grapevine (Vitis spp.) rootstocks were screened in pots for resistance to the dagger nematode, Xiphinema index, from 1979 to 1981. Resistance ratings were based on visible root symptoms and on changes in the nematode populations over 16 months. Nineteen of the 23 Californian hybrid rootstocks tested were resistant, as were ''Harmony'','' ''Freedom,'' ''Schwarzmann,'' and ''3309.'' Two hybrids of V. rufotomentosa, ''171-52'' and ''176-9,'' were possibly immune to X. index. The rootstocks ''ARG 1,'' '' 110 R,'' ''1202,'' and ''1616,'' which are used commercially for phylloxera resistance were susceptible.  相似文献

The relationship between the size of the light harvesting antenna to photosystem II (LHCII) and quenching of non-photochemical and dark level fluorescence was studied in wild-type rye (Secale cereale L. cv. Musketeer) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Gunilla) as well as in the barley chlorophyll b-less chlorina F2 mutant (H. vulgare L. cv. Dornaria, chlorina-F2). Exposure for 10 min to an irradiance of 500 μmol m?2 s?1 resulted in a strong (0.71–0.73) non-photochemical (qs) quenching of the fluorescence yield in wild-type (WT) material, while the barley chlorina F2-mutant was quenched to 75% of this level. Relaxation of qs in darkness revealed a fast initial decay, related to relaxation of the high-energy-state dependent (qE) part of qs. Etiolated seedlings of rye and barley exposed to intermittent light (IML) for 36 cycles of 2 min light and 118 min darkness had suppressed Chl b and LHCII-production in both WT rye and barley, while the barley chlorina F2-mutant became totally devoid of all LHCII-polypeptides. It was found that the levels of qs and qs were similar in control grown barley chlorina F2 and IML-grown WT rye and barley, but qs was reduced by 30 to 35% and qs by 50 to 65%, respectively, as compared to control-grown. WT plants. No significant qs could be detected in IML-grown barley chlorina F2. It is clear, from these changes in in vivo fluorescence quenching in rye and barley that a significant level of qs is detectable even in the absence of LHCII. Only when the proximal antennae are totally absent, does qE completely disappear. We conclude that the presence of LHCII is not an absolute requirement for qE-quenching and suggest that distal as well as proximal antenna may contribute to qE in vivo.  相似文献

The toxic conditions of Oxisol soils attributed to oranging symptoms of rice grown in the Sitiung Transmigration area, Sumatra, Indonesia were evaluated in the laboratory. Changes of pH and Eh of flooded soils, and concentrations of nutrients in the soils and in the rice plants were measured. The soils were clayey, kaolinitic, isohyperthermic, Typic Haplorthox. It was found that Eh of the soils sharply decreased from an average value of +460 ± 150 mV to –217 ± 15 mV following 60 days of flooding (DF). During the same period of flooding, soil pH increased from an average value of 5.2 ± 0.6 to 6.6 ± 0.2. Concentrations of NaOAc extractable Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Mo, Ca, Mg, P, and K, but not Al, increased markedly whereas their water-soluble form, except Fe, decreased slightly following 60 DF. Leaf tissue analyses indicated that 13, 51 and 58% of the rice plant samples contained potentially toxic level of Mn, Fe and Al, respectively, as their contents were higher than the assumed threshold toxicity levels of 2500, 300, and 300 mg kg–1. Thirteen, 16, 2, and 3% of the leaf tissue also contained potentially deficient levels of P, K, Ca, and Mg, respectively. The oranging symptom in the rice leaf tissue appeared to be due to indirect toxicity of Fe, Mn, and Al, i.e., Fe-induced, Mn-induced, and Al-induced deficiency of P, K, Ca and Mg. As a result of the relatively high concentrations of NaOAc extractable Fe, Mn, and Al in the soil solution, root growth was limited and coated with iron and manganese oxides thereby reducing the root's capacity to absorb nutrients from the soils. The work was supported by USAID Grant No. DPE-5542-G-SS-4055-00 (3.F-10). Background and aims

Although Helicobacter pylori is recognized as an extracellular infection bacterium, it can lead to an increase in the number of CD8+ T cells after infection. At present, the characteristics of H. pylori antigen-specific CD8+ T cells and the epitope response have not been elucidated. This study was focused on putative protective antigen UreB to detect specific CD8+ T-cell responses in vitro and screen for predominant response epitopes.

Methods

The PBMCs collected from H. pylori-infected individuals were stimulated by UreB peptide pools in vitro to identify the immunodominant CD8+ T-cell epitopes. Furthermore, their HLA restriction characteristics were detected accordingly by NGS. Finally, the relationship between immunodominant responses and appearance of gastric symptoms after H. pylori infection was conducted.

Results

UreB-specific CD8+ T-cell responses were detected in H. pylori-infected individuals. Three of UreB dominant epitopes (A-2 (UreB443–451: GVKPNMIIK), B-4 (UreB420–428: SEYVGSVEV), and C-1 (UreB5–13: SRKEYVSMY)) were firstly identified and mainly presented by HLA-A*1101, HLA-B*4001 and HLA-C*0702 alleles, respectively. C-1 responses were mostly occurred in H. pylori-infected subjects without gastric symptoms and may alleviate the degree of gastric inflammation.

Conclusions

The UreB dominant epitope-specific CD8+ T-cell response was closely related to the gastric symptoms after H. pylori infection, and the C-1 (UreB5-13) dominant peptides may be protective epitopes.  相似文献

Field data on the sulphur and cation budget of growing Norway spruce canopies (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) are summarized. They are used to test a spruce decline model capable of quantifying effects of chronic SO2 pollution on spruce forests. At ambient SO2 concentrations, acute SO2 damage is rare, but exposure to polluted air produces reversible thinning of the canopy structure with a half-time of a few years. Canopy thinning in the spruce decline model is highest (i) at elevated SO2 pollution, (ii) in the mountains, (iii) at unfertilized sites with poor K+, Mg2+ or Zn2+ supply, (iv) at low spruce litter decomposition rates, and (v) acidic, shallow soils at high annual precipitation rates in the field and vice versa. Model application using field data from Würzburg (moderate SO2 pollution, alkaline soils, no spruce decline) and from the Erzgebirge (extreme SO2 pollution, acidic soils in the mountains, massive spruce decline) predicts canopy thinning by 2–11% in Würzburg and by 45–70% in the Erzgebirge. The model also predicts different SO2-tolerance limits for Norway spruce depending on the site elevation and on the nutritional status of the needles. If needle loss of more than 25% (damage class 2) is taken to indicate ‘real damage’ exceeding natural variances, then for optimum soil conditions SO2 tolerance limits range from (27.3 ± 7.4) μg m?3 to (62.6 ± 16.5) μg m?3. For shallow and acidic soils, SO2 tolerance limits range from (22.0 ± 5.5) μg m?3 to (37.4 ± 7.5) μ m?3. These tolerance limits, which are calculated on an ecophysiological data basis for Norway spruce are close to epidemiological SO2-toIerance limits as recommended by the IUFRO, UN-ECE and WHO. The observed statistical regression slope of the plot (damaged spruce trees vs. SO2-pollution) in west Germany is confirmed by modelling (6% error). Model application to other forest trees allows deduction of the observed sequence of SO2-sensitivity: Abies > Picea > Pinus > Fagus > Quercus. Thus, acute phytotoxicity of SO2 seems not to be involved in ‘forest decline’. Chronic SO2-pollution induces massive canopy thinning of Abies alba and Picea abies only at unfavourable sites, where natural stress factors and secondary effects of SO2pollution act together to produce tree decline.  相似文献
