Ephippia ofCeriodaphnia pulchella Sars were collected at 2 sites from successive sediment layers. Hatching observed in the laboratory gave information about the duration of their viability. Conclusions about the hatching situation in the lake were drawn from the ratio of intact to total ephippia at various lake depths. The results are discussed.  相似文献

Several methods for hatching the eggs and rearing individuals of the first generation (fundatrices) of Sitobion avenae were investigated. The most successful methods were incubation of the eggs on grass seedlings at 2°C and rearing the fundatrices on grass seedlings (overall survival 66%) and incubation of the eggs in plastic boxes at 2°C and rearing the fundatrices on wheat seedlings (overall survival 62%).
Résumé L'éclosion des oeufs de S. avenae peut être induite par le transfert à 10°C ou 12°C, après une incubation de 75–120 jours à 2°C. Le pourcentage le plus élevé d'éclosions a été obtenu quand les oeufs avaient incubé pendant 100 à 110 jours à 2°C (67% at 71.5% respectivement) dans des petites boîtes de plastique, ou pendant 100 jours à 2°C sur des pousses de graminées (73.5%). Si les oeufs sont pondus sur blé, la plante ne peut pas tolérer la période d'incubation, mais cet obstacle peut être surmonté en obligeant les ovipares à pondre leurs oeufs sur de pousses de graminées, comme Poa annua, hôte convenable pour les fondatrices. Les ovipares peuvent aussi pondre sans difficultés sur autre chose que des végétaux, et des récipients peuvent ètre mis à incuber sans contenir du matériel végétal.

The hatching distributions of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) with different genotypes at eight loci are compared in two experiments with the same strain. Embryos were incubated at temperatures colder (5 and 8°C) and warmer (12°C) than normally experienced by these fish (9.5°C). At hatching, embryos were separated into five hatching groups representing the chronological order of hatching. There is no significant correlation between multilocus heterozygosity and hatching time at any temperature in either experiment. Fish in the middle of the hatching distribution had the highest average heterozygosity. In both experiments, heterozygotes at the majority of loci examined tended to hatch relatively later within the hatching distribution at 12°C than at both 5 and 8°C. Fish with different genotypes atPgm2 andCk1 showed significant differences in hatching time that were consistent between experiments.Ck1 heterozygotes hatched sooner than homozygotes at 8°C but later at 12°C.Pgm2 heterozygotes hatched later than homozygotes at all temperatures and significantly later in four of five cases. At the other loci examined, however, the relative hatching distributions of fish with particular genotypes were not significantly different or repeatable between experiments.This research was supported by National Science Foundation Grant BSR-8300039 awarded to Dr. Fred W. The hatching responses of Globodera rostochiensis (golden potato cyst nematode) to purified and partially-purified preparations of natural (including the potato glycoalkaloids solanine and α-chaconine) and artificial hatching factors (HFs) were bimodal. At least 10 HFs, mostly anionic, were resolved from potato root leachate by a combination of gel permeation and ion-exchange chromatography. Whereas potato roots were the principal source of HFs, haulm leachate also contained such chemicals. Root leachate from aseptically-grown potato plants lacked several HFs which were present in conventionally-produced leachate.  相似文献

Environmentally cued hatching has been well-documented in amphibians in response to a wide range of abiotic and biotic factors. The hatching of terrestrial amphibian eggs in response to flooding may be basal within the group, but amphibian lineages in tropical Asia and sub-Saharan Africa have not received as much attention as their Neotropical counterparts. We investigated submergence-induced hatching in Feihyla hansenae, a Rhacophorid tree frog with terrestrial eggs. We quantified natural rates of clutch submergence at our study site in Thailand. Using submergence experiments, we found that embryos are capable of hatching early to escape flooding, and that failure to hatch results in mortality. Among the embryos that were able to hatch early, only the earliest, youngest hatchlings experienced a trade-off in body size that persisted for 6 days, while later, older hatchlings were not significantly smaller than spontaneous hatchlings under control conditions. By incorporating our natural and experimental data into Monte Carlo methods to simulate and compare survival probabilities with and without hatching plasticity, we found an overall 3.1% increase in submergence survival due to hatching plasticity. Our findings support the idea that flooding-induced hatching is widespread across amphibians with terrestrial eggs and highlight the importance of researching understudied tropical regions. As climate change is projected to affect rainfall patterns, the ability of embryos to escape abiotic egg-stage threats may be an indicator of species' ability to flexibly navigate a changing environment.  相似文献

Effects of two light intensities and different concentration of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and glycerol on hydrated cyst hatching inThamnocephalus platyurus were studied. A maximum of 65±6% hatching was recorded within seven days at 2500 lux continuous light regime. Hatching was at a minimum during the first two days, peaked between the third and fourth days, decreased thereafter. Hatching success was a function of duration of light exposure. Eight percent of cysts hatched in the dark, while cysts exposed to 24h light and subsequently incubated in the dark showed 27±2% hatching. Hatchability was significantly increased (23%) in 0.0375% DMSO and 0.0125% glycerol. Concentration above 0.05% DMSO and 0.025% glycerol had no or a negative influence on hatching. Since low concentrations of DMSO were non-toxic, apolar compounds like Ca2+ ionophore can be dissolved in DMSO to study the role of Calcium in cyst hatching.  相似文献

Habitat preference, seasonal occurrence, starvation resistance, hatching eggs ofBranchipus schaefferi, and effects of predation onB. schaefferi were studied.Branchipus was only present in turbid, unvegetated ponds and absent in ponds which contain higher aquatic vegetation and theSpirogyra sp. The first individuals ofB. schaefferi appeared in April when water temperature was 10 °C and the last adults in November at a water temperature of 3.5 °C. Up to 6 reproducing generations were observed during this period. Abundance ofB. schaefferi was higher in temporary ponds than in permanent ponds. Sex ratio was close to unity for most of the year. Body size ofB. schaefferi males and females was significantly positively correlated with pond volume. Without foodB. schaefferi could survive for 1.5 to 2 days at 20 °C and 4 to 5 days at 10 °C. Hatching success of eggs decreased when eggs were dried for 7 months. Freezing of eggs had no effect on hatching success. From] the predators tested,Chaoborus sp. larvae clearly selected smallB. schaefferi; one consumed approximately 6Branchipus d–1 at a density of 6 to 12 prey 1–1. The other predators, dragonfly larvae, and larvae and adults ofTriturus alpestris selected alternative prey types, for exampleTubifex sp. and ostracods.  相似文献

Settlement of male great reed warblers in the breeding ground was highly asynchronous at Lake Biwa in Japan. It took over 1 month from the appearance of the first male to a saturation in number of males. In resource-defense-polygyny, males are expected to try to defend as large an area as possible in the optimal habitat. In fact, a small number of the earliest settling males divided up the breeding ground almost completely as territories among themselves and these were later reduced in size with the addition of later settlers. The reduction was not due to a seasonal decline of aggressiveness on the part of the owners but to a higher level of intrusion pressure by later arriving males. The neighbor-neighbor relationship, once established, was rather stable. Home range overlap was small and territorial contacts were few between neighbors. Territorial boundaries seem not to shift despite the addition of new males as long as the neighbors were the same. The stable relationships between neighbors are expected to help the earlier resident to maintain his large and good territories throughout the breeding season and hence polygyny is favored in this species.  相似文献
