Juvenile three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus in their nursery pond had a bimodal length distribution after October in their first year of life. A sea-run migration of all individuals belonging to the lower modal group was observed, with a peak in early November. These data suggest that partial migration based on the early status of individual juveniles occurs in the Pacific Ocean form of three-spined stickleback.  相似文献

Quantitative estimations of spring migrating fish have been made in the mouth part of the small coastal river Ängerån which flows into the northern Bothnian Sea (63°35N, 19°50E). In 1981 nearly 3 000 fish were counted ascending to the spawning grounds in the lower reaches of the Ängerån. These species, such as pike, perch, roach and ide, adapted to the oligohaline environment in the Bothnian Sea for most of the year, migrate to spawn in the coastal stream. The reason for these migrations can be interpreted to indicate that the Ängerån offers more favourable water temperature conditions at spawning time compared with the Bothnian Sea, which is ice-covered up to the beginning of May. The most important result of the investigation in the Ängerån is that these fish species, in the same way as the salmonids, return to theirhome-stream every year as adults.Andreasson & Petersson (1982) listed 69 species of fish in the oligohaline Gulf of Bothnia (Table 1) where salinity varies from 2 near the mouth of the River Torneäly to 6 in the vicinity of the Åland Islands (Fig. 1). The fish fauna comprises freshwater and marine species, fish migrating between brackish and freshwater rivers and streams, and recently introduced non-endogenous species.Andreasson & Petersson (1982) designated only five species as anadromous migrators, whereas our studies show that 11 species migrate from the sea to spawn in the Ängerån, a small river discharging into the northern Bothnian Sea (Fig. 2). Earlier reports on these migrations have been given by Berglund (1978) and Johnson (1978, 1982) and for another small stream in the area by Berg (1982).The present paper describes the annual spring migrations of pike, perch, roach and ide between the northern Bothnian Sea and the Ängerån, for the year 1981.  相似文献

Growth rate and energy reserves are important determinants of fitness and are governed by endogenous and exogenous factors. Thus, examining the influence of individual and multiple stressors on growth and energy reserves can help estimate population health under current and future conditions. In young anadromous fishes, freshwater habitat quality determines physiological state and fitness of juveniles emigrating to marine habitats. In this study, the authors tested how temperature and food availability affect survival, growth and energy reserves in juvenile anadromous alewives (Alosa pseudoharengus), a forage fish distributed along the eastern North American continent. Field-collected juvenile anadromous A. pseudoharengus were exposed for 21 days to one of two temperatures (21°C and 25°C) and one of two levels of food rations (1% or 2% tank biomass daily) and compared for differences in final size, fat mass-at-length, lean mass-at-length and energy density. Increased temperature and reduced ration both led to lower growth rates, and the effect of reduced ration was greater at higher temperature. Fat mass-at-length decreased with dry mass, and energy density increased with total length, suggesting size-based endogenous influences on energy reserves. Lower ration also directly decreased fat mass-at-length, lean mass-at-length and energy density. Given the fitness implications of size and energy reserves, temperature and food availability should be considered important indicators of nursery habitat quality and incorporated in A. pseudoharengus life-history models to improve forecasting of population health under climate change.  相似文献

Anadromous brown trout (sea trout), Salmo trutta, is currently in decline throughout its range, largely due to anthropogenic stressors in freshwater and marine habitats. Acoustic telmetry was utilized to study the marine migration of sea trout post-smolts from three populations in a relatively pristine subarctic fjord system. While at sea, the sea trout spent a substantial part of their time close to their natal river, preferred near shore over pelagic habitats and were strongly surface oriented. Despite a fidelity towards local areas, the sea trout utilized various parts of the fjord system, with maximum dispersion >30 km and total migration distance >300 km. Almost half of the sea trout (44%) migrated between river outlets, indicating that a metapopulation approach may be appropriate when managing neighbouring sea trout populations at high latitudes. Furthermore, the different populations displayed different migratory behaviours in terms of distance migrated, dispersion from origin and the likelihood of leaving their home area. This variation in migratory behaviour is likely influenced by spatiotemporal differences in habitat quality between sites, indicating that local habitat variations may promote population-specific behavioural responses even in relatively confined fjord systems.  相似文献

Anadromous species occupy multiple freshwater, estuarine, and marine habitats, which posesspecial challenges in wildlife management. Inparticular, the level of immigration betweendrainages can be a critical factor in thedefinition of management units and the designof population-specific stocking programs. Thesemi-anadromous shortnose sturgeon (Acipenser brevirostrum) is listed as anendangered species under the Endangered SpeciesAct in the United States. To assess populationstructure in this species as a guide toeffective management, tissue samples werecollected from adult specimens (N = 198) fromfive river systems in the southeastern U.S.,and augmented with a sample from New Brunswick,Canada (N = 13), the extreme northern end ofthe species' range. Comparisons of mtDNAcontrol region sequences reveal a shallow genegenealogy and modest, but significant, population structuring (st = 4.3%or st = 17.7% when Canadian samplesare included). Populations inhabiting riversystems in the southeastern U.S. are closelyrelated, a pattern consistent with more recentdivergences along evolutionary timeframes. Haplotype diversity is moderate to high in mostdrainages (h = 0.383–1.000), exceptfor the Savannah and Edisto rivers, indicatingthat historical levels of mtDNA diversity mightbe largely intact outside of these drainages. Low mtDNA diversity in the Savannah andneighboring Edisto drainages might stem from anexperimental stocking effort during 1984–1992 that depressed overall genetic diversityin the Savannah and established or augmentedthe Edisto River population with a relativelylimited number of matrilines.  相似文献

Predicting effects of climate change on species and ecosystems depend on understanding responses to shifts in means (such as trends in global temperatures), but also shifts in climate variability. To evaluate potential responses of anadromous fish populations to an increasingly variable environment, we performed a hierarchical analysis of 21 Chinook salmon populations from the Pacific Northwest, examining support for changes in river flows and flow variability on population growth. More than half of the rivers analyzed have already experienced significant increases in flow variability over the last 60 years, and this study shows that this increase in variability in freshwater flows has a more negative effect than any other climate signal included in our model. Climate change models predict that this region will experience warmer winters and more variable flows, which may limit the ability of these populations to recover.  相似文献

Eleven microsatellite markers were isolated and characterized for the ice goby, Leucopsarion petersii, from genomic libraries enriched for (ATG)(9) and (CA)(16) . Twenty individuals from a single population were used to screen polymorphism in these loci. The number of alleles per locus and observed heterozygosity ranged from four to 22 and from 0.35 to 1.00, respectively. All loci did not significantly deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, and there was no evidence of linkage disequilibrium between all loci-pairs. These loci showed Mendelian inheritance in a full-sib family. The high level of polymorphism of these loci will be useful for studies of population genetics.  相似文献

Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) accumulate substantial nutrients in their bodies as they grow to adulthood at sea. These nutrients are carried to predominantly oligotrophic lakes and streams, where they are released during and after spawning. Research over more than 3 decades has shown that the annual deposition of salmon-borne marine-derived nutrients (MD-nutrients) is important for the productivity of freshwater communities throughout the Pacific coastal region. However, the pathways and mechanisms for MD-nutrient transfer and accumulation in freshwater and riparian ecosystems remain virtually unexplored, consequently, there are many uncertainties in this area. This article addresses three related topics. First, we summarize recent advances in our understanding of the linkages among MD-nutrients, freshwater (including riparian) ecosystems, and community dynamics by addressing the importance of MD-nutrients to lakes and streams and by then reviewing large-scale and long-term processes in the atmosphere and ocean that govern variability in salmon populations. Second, we evaluate the validity of the discoveries and their implications for active ecosystem management, noting areas where extrapolation from these results still requires great caution. Finally, we outline five key research issues where additional discoveries could greatly augment our understanding of the processes shaping the structure and dynamics of salmon populations and the characteristics of their freshwater habitat and associated riparian zones. Collectively, the data suggest that the freshwater portion of the salmon production system is intimately linked to the ocean. Moreover, for the system to be sustainable, a holistic approach to management will be required. This holistic approach will need to treat climate cycles, salmon, riparian vegetation, predators, and MD-nutrient flowpaths and feedbacks as an integrated system. There has been an increased focus on Salvelinus alpinus as a potential long-term host to Gyrodactylus salaris and, here, both susceptibility to G. salaris and ability to sustain a parasite population seasonally, was tested using fry and parr of S. alpinus from the River Skibotnelva, northern Norway. Fry were highly susceptible. Gyrodactylus salaris survived on allopatric S. alpinus parr during the 5 month-long winter when water temperatures were c. 1° C. Salvelinus alpinus fry also maintained a pulse of G. salaris infection for over 155 days from early May until autumn. Gyrodactylus salaris are thus able to reproduce and survive on S. alpinus for long periods and at low water temperatures. In spring, newly hatched fry of S. alpinus may serve as an important host to maintain a G. salaris metapopulation within a river system. The results suggest that S. alpinus are adequate long-term hosts of G. salaris independent of the presence of the co-occurring highly susceptible S. salar .  相似文献
