Summary Airborne grass-pollen concentrations in six cities in the EEC are compared, based on observations from five years, 1982–1986.
Results show that there are quantitative differences both between the monitoring stations and between the years. Very provisionally,
the average seasonal total of the European urban airborne grass-pollen concentration can be put at 4 to 5000 per m3 of air. Also qualitatively, regarding the seasonal fluctuations, there are differences between the stations, and between
the years. Generally, the results confirm that June is the most typical grass-pollen month in northwestern Europe, whereas
in mediterranean Europe May is the more prominent grass-pollen period. There seems to be little coherence between the starting
dates of the grass-pollen season even at relatively nearby stations in northwestern Europe, suggestive for a great influence

Behavioural responses of nymphs and adults in the gregarious phase of the desert locust,Schistocerca gregaria (Forskal) (Orthoptera: Acrididae) were investigated in a single-chamber bioassay system to a choice of two columns of air,
one permeated with airborne volatiles emanating from either sex of nymphs or adults and the other untreated. There was no
sexual differentiation in the production of or response to nymphal volatiles. Young adults of either sex did not produce a
stimulus with significant activity. Of the older adults, only the males produced the aggregation stimulus to which both sexes
were equally responsive. Charcoal-trapped volatiles from the two sexes of nymphs and adults evoked similar aggregation responses.
Antennae of the older adults showed significantly higher EAG responses than those of fifth instar nymphs to all four volatile

Summary During 1982 – 1991 pollen deposition in the centre of Cracow (southern Poland) was investigated using the gravimetric method. 32 taxa of the 84 identified were taken into consideration, and nearly all of them can be allergenic. The beginning of mass pollen fall was observed in the second decade of March, and the third decade of September saw the completion of the yearly cycle of abundant appearance of pollen in the aeroplankton. Bioaerosols (or biogenic aerosols) have largely been overlooked by molecular ecologists. However, this is rapidly changing as bioaerosols play key roles in public health, environmental chemistry and the dispersal ecology of microbes. Due to the low environmental concentrations of bioaerosols, collecting sufficient biomass for molecular methods is challenging. Currently, no standardized methods for bioaerosol collection for molecular ecology research exist. Each study requires a process of optimization, which greatly slows the advance of bioaerosol science. Here, we evaluated air filtration and liquid impingement for bioaerosol sampling across a range of environmental conditions. We also investigated the effect of sampling matrices, sample concentration strategies and sampling duration on DNA yield. Air filtration using polycarbonate filters gave the highest recovery, but due to the faster sampling rates possible with impingement, we recommend this method for fine ‐scale temporal/spatial ecological studies. To prevent bias for the recovery of Gram‐positive bacteria, we found that the matrix for impingement should be phosphate‐buffered saline. The optimal method for bioaerosol concentration from the liquid matrix was centrifugation. However, we also present a method using syringe filters for rapid in‐field recovery of bioaerosols from impingement samples, without compromising microbial diversity for high ‐throughput sequencing approaches. Finally, we provide a resource that enables molecular ecologists to select the most appropriate sampling strategy for their specific research question. 相似文献

In this study, the effects of the electric charges and fields on the viability of airborne microorganisms were investigated. The electric charges of different magnitude and polarity were imparted on airborne microbial cells by a means of induction charging. The airborne microorganisms carrying different electric charge levels were then extracted by an electric mobility analyzer and collected using a microbial sampler. It was found that the viability of Pseudomonas fluorescens bacteria, used as a model for sensitive bacteria, carrying a net charge from 4100 negative to 30 positive elementary charges ranged between 40% and 60%; the viability of the cells carrying >2700 positive charges was below 1.5%. In contrast, the viability of the stress-resistant spores of Bacillus subtilis var. niger (used as simulant of anthrax-causing Bacillus anthracis spores when testing bioaerosol sensors in various studies), was not affected by the amount of electric charges on the spores. Because bacterial cells depend on their membrane potential for basic metabolic activities, drastic changes occurring in the membrane potential during aerosolization and the local electric fields induced by the imposed charges appeared to affect the sensitive cells' viability. These findings facilitate applications of electric charging for environmental control purposes involving sterilization of bacterial cells by imposing high electric charges on them. The findings from this study can also be used in the development of new bioaerosol sampling methods based on electrostatic principles. 相似文献

Inhalation of airborne fungal spores or fungalenzymes may cause adverse pulmonary healtheffects. The enzyme NAGase(N-acetyl--D-glucosaminidase) is achitinase presumed to be secreted by all fungi. In this study, NAGase activities andconcentrations of fungi are estimated inairborne biomass dust to acquire knowledgeabout the level of NAGase activity and therelationship between NAGase activity andconcentrations of airborne fungal spores.NAGase was sampled on both teflon andpolycarbonate filters, and polycarbonatefilters proved to be better for extraction ofNAGase than teflon filters. NAGase was foundin airborne dust at a biofuel plant and in dustgenerated from biomass. At a biofuel plant, themedian level of exposure to NAGase was 21 pmols–1 m–3. Significant correlationswere found between NAGase activities, totalnumber of fungal spores and CFU of fungi, withthe highest degree of correlation being betweenthe total number of fungal spores and theNAGase activity (r = 0.802, n = 76). Furthermore,when dust was stored for different periods, theculturability of fungal spores was stronglyreduced and the NAGase activity was not or onlyslightly reduced after up to 40 days ofstorage. Accordingly, NAGase activity may beused as a rapid method to get an estimate ofthe exposure level to airborne fungal spores.Whether pure NAGase or the NAGaseconcentrations observed here cause any healtheffects is not known, although it has beenshown that other fungal enzymes can causerespiratory disorders and a chitinase isdescribed as an allergen. 相似文献

This study was undertaken in order to understand thebehaviour of airborne pollen grains, namely therelationship between their concentrations andconcomitant meteorological parameters, at differentaltitudes (ground level, 200, 400 and 600 m) of thelower atmosphere and its daily variations over onesite (the experimental farm of the University ofLeón). The experimental design involved a tetheredballoon (2.25 m3), an ADAS remote meteorologicalstation and an original radio controlled three headedpollen and spore sampler (called GABIS) using theRotorod design. Each head sampled a differentaltitude, while two control samples were taken atground level. Twenty-one takeoffs could be realized inthe 5 weeks period between end of May and end of June1997. Sampling was done early in the morning and sampling time at each altitudewas of 15 minutes. Results show that 45 differenttypes of pollen grains could be collected at this timeof the year and that significant variations could beobserved in the behaviour of the pollen cloud on a dayto day basis, probably because of differentmeteorological situations. Contrary to what isgenerally believed, pollen was in most cases moreabundant at higher altitude – on average by 30% ascompared to ground level – making evident anaerobiological layer of transport at about 500 m aboveground. This was especially the case for trees (Quercus and Castanea). The atmosphere MixingRatio was the most explicative factor at 200 m, whiletemperature dominated significance analysis at both400 and 600 m. 相似文献
