This paper seeks to reinterpret the life and work of J. B. S. Haldane by focusing on an illuminating but largely ignored essay he published in1927, “The Last Judgment” – the sequel to his better known work, Daedalus (1924). This astonishing essay expresses a vision of the human future over the next 40,000,000 years, one that revises and updates Wellsian futurism with the long range implications of the “new biology” for human destiny. That vision served as a kind of lifelong credo, one that infused and informed his diverse scientific work, political activities, and popular writing, and that gave unity and coherence to his remarkable career. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

VAN RAAMSDONK, L. W. D. & DE VRIES, T. 1992. Biosystematic studies in Allium L. section Cepa. Principal component analyses and hybrid analyses, according to Wells, using 31 morphological characteristics were used to study the biosystematic relationships between six Allium species of section Cepa and A. roylei of section Rhizirideum. Seventeen interspecific hybrid populations were included. Based on these analyses and on additional information from geography, chromosome banding pattern, DNA amount and seed epidermis texture, the species of Allium section Cepa can be divided into three groups: 1. A. galanthum and A. pskemense , 2. A. cepa, A. oschaninii and A. vavilovii and 3. A. futulosum and A, allaicum. Presumed evolution of both groups 2 and 3 from the basic group 1 is indicated by the development of new morphological characteristics, a change in genome structure and migration.  相似文献

Sensing and responding to pathogens and tissue damage is a core mechanism of innate immune host defense, and inflammasomes represent a central cytosolic pattern recognition receptor pathway leading to the generation of the pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin-1β and interleukin-18 and pyroptotic cell death that causes the subsequent release of danger signals to propagate and perpetuate inflammatory responses. While inflammasome activation is essential for host defense, deregulated inflammasome responses and excessive release of inflammatory cytokines and danger signals are linked to an increasing spectrum of inflammatory diseases. In this review, we will discuss recent developments in elucidating the role of PYRIN domain-only proteins (POPs) and the related CARD-only proteins (COPs) in regulating inflammasome responses and their impact on inflammatory disease.  相似文献

Historically labor has been central to humaninteractions with the environment, yetenvironmentalists pay it scant attention. Indeed, they have been critical of those whoforeground labor in their politics, socialistsin particular. However, environmentalists havefound the nineteenth-century socialist WilliamMorris appealing despite the fact that he wroteextensively on labor. This paper considers theplace of labor in the relationship betweenhumanity and the natural world in the work ofMorris and two of his contemporaries, theeminent scientist Thomas Henry Huxley, and theFabian socialist Herbert George Wells. 摘要 目的:探讨C反应蛋白(CRP)、D-二聚体(D-D)及Wells评分与脊柱骨折患者术后深静脉血栓(DVT)的关系,分析三者对脊柱骨折患者术后DVT的诊断价值。方法:选择2017年2月至2019年9月期间我院骨科收治的351例脊柱骨折患者,根据术后是否发生DVT将患者分为DVT组(59例)和非DVT组(292例)。比较DVT组和非DVT组术后1d、术后3d、术后7d、术后14d的CRP、D-D水平及Wells评分。采用Spearman秩相关分析CRP、D-D水平与Wells评分相关性。采用受试者工作特征(ROC)曲线分析CRP、D-D、Wells评分单项及联合三项指标对脊柱骨折患者术后DVT的诊断价值。结果:两组术后1d、术后3d、术后7d、术后14d的CRP、D-D水平以及Wells评分均呈先升高后降低变化趋势(P<0.05),DVT组术后3d、术后7d、术后14d的CRP、D-D水平以及Wells评分高于非DVT组(P<0.05)。Spearman秩相关分析结果显示DVT组CRP、D-D水平与Wells评分均呈正相关(P<0.05)。ROC曲线分析结果显示术后7d的D-D、CRP、Wells评分诊断脊柱骨折患者术后DVT的曲线下面积(AUC)分别为0.823、0.785、0.769,高于术后3d和术后14d;术后7d的CRP、D-D和Wells评分联合诊断脊柱骨折患者术后DVT的AUC为0.928,高于各指标单独诊断。结论:CRP、D-D水平及Wells评分均与脊柱骨折患者术后DVT有关,术后7d CRP、D-D和Wells评分联合诊断术后DVT的价值较高。  相似文献
