The probability that protected areas will deliver their potential for maintaining or enhancing biodiversity is likely to be
maximised if they are appropriately and effectively managed. As a result, governments and conservation agencies are devoting
much attention to the management of protected areas. In the U.K., the demand for performance accountability has resulted in
Public Service Agreements (PSA) that set out targets for government departments to deliver results in return for investments
being made. One such target for England is to ensure that all nationally important wildlife sites are in favourable condition
by 2010. Here, we tested the hypothesis, of potential strategic importance, that the ecological condition of these sites is
predictable from relationships with a range of physical, environmental and demographic variables. We used binary logistic
regression to investigate these relationships, using the results of English Nature’s 1997–2003 condition assessment exercise.
Generally, sites in unfavourable condition tend to be larger in area, located at higher elevations, but with higher human
population density and are more spatially isolated from units of the same habitat. However, despite the range of different
parameters included in our models, the extent to which the condition of any given site could be predicted was low. Our results
have implications for the delivery of PSA targets, funding allocation, and the location of new protected areas. 相似文献

Human monocytes synthesize large amounts of the second complement component (C2) after incubation with a T-lymphocyte product called monocyte complement stimulator (MCS). The human monocyte-like cell line, U937, also synthesizes C2 and can be stimulated to increase this synthesis by lymphokine-rich culture supernates. Additionally, phorbol myristate acetate (PMA), an agent which induces maturational changes in other macrophage-like cell lines, also stimulates C2 synthesis by U937 cells. Lymphokine and PMA stimulation of C2 secretion by U937 are both reversibly inhibitable by cycloheximide. At optimal concentrations for stimulation of C2 synthesis, PMA inhibits [3H]thymidine incorporation by U937 indicating that increased C2 is not due to increased numbers of U937 cells. 相似文献

Immunologic and clinical improvement of progressive coccidioidomycosis following administration of transfer factor 总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Three patients with progressive coccidioidomycosis were given preparations of transfer factor (TF). Adverse reactions to TF were minimal. Following TF administration two of these patients had prolonged clinical remissions in their coccidioidal disease. Cellular immune responses were sequentially evaluated by coccidioidininduced delayed-type skin tests, lymphocyte blast transformation and macrophage inhibition factor production (MIF). These three patients each exhibited different cellular immune patterns before and after TF administration. Two patients converted their coccidioidin skin tests, and one converted lymphocyte transformation response to coccidioidin. Also, TF apparently favorably affected the MIF response in all three patients. 相似文献

A cell line (UM-BGE-2) derived from embryos of the cockroach Blattella germanica was frozen to ?196 °C under a variety of conditions and cell viability was assayed after warming. It was found that cell viability was affected by the cooling rate, the warming rate, the controlled cooling endpoint temperature, and the type and concentration of cryoprotectant. The best survival for cells suspended in Grace's tissue culture medium containing 1 M Me2SO was obtained when cells were cooled at 1 °C/ min to at least ?90 °C before being placed in liquid nitrogen and warmed at more than 900 °C/min. The biological activity of 1α,24R,25-trihydroxyvitamin D3 [1α,24R,25(OH)3D3] was elevated in comparison to the hormonally active form of vitamin D3, 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1α,25(OH)2D3], in the rachitic chick in terms of its ability to (a) stimulate intestinal calcium absorption, (b) mobilize bone calcium, (c) induce intestinal calcium binding protein, (d) modulate the level of enzyme activity of the renal 25-OH-D3-1-hydroxylase system, and (e) interact with the intestinal cystosol-chromatin receptor system for the 1α,25(OH)2D3 receptor system. When C57BL/6 mice were injected iv with BCG in an oil-in-saline emulsion, they developed intense pulmonary granulomatous inflammation (PGI) and splenomegaly as well as chemotactic activity for macrophages and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) in their lung fluids. PGI, splenomegaly, and levels of chemotactic activity and ACE were markedly reduced in T-cell-deficient “B” mice. The capacity to develop PGI was fully restored and splenomegaly was partially restored in “B” mice by the provision of syngeneic thymocytes, spleen cells, or purified T cells. These results indicate that the full expression of BCG-induced PGI is dependent upon thymus-derived cells and is associated with high levels of chemotactic activity for macrophages and ACE in the lung lavage fluid. Although BCG-induced splenomegaly appears to be T cell dependent, it did not reach its full magnitude in reconstituted “B” mice. 相似文献

The activity of rat liver supernatant aldehyde dehydrogenase is increased by phenobarbital treatment in one selected strain (RR) but not in another strain (rr) of animals derived from randomally bred populations (Deitrich, Collins, and Erwin (1972) J. Biol. Chem., 247, 7232). Before 14 days of age, increased enzyme activity after phenobarbital treatment is minimal but between 30 and 60 days of age there is a maximal increase in activity after phenobarbital treatment. Using animals of this age, it was shown that both cycloheximide and actinomycin D block this response to phenobarbital. Phenobarbital treatment decreases heat stability of crude preparations of the enzyme from RR rats, but increases heat stability of the enzyme from rr animals. 相似文献
