The Mylagaulidae are a family of burrowing rodents abundant in Miocene faunas from western North America. Recent taxonomic revisions of mylagaulids from the Great Plains suggest that their systematics may be best understood on a regional basis. Previous studies addressed the taxonomy and evolutionary history of mylagaulids from the Great Basin, but recent discoveries of specimens, new phylogenetic data, and more detailed stratigraphical information necessitate a thorough reanalysis of their relationships and occurrences. We present a revision of the systematics of the mylagaulids from the Great Basin. In addition to rare large mylagaulids of uncertain taxonomic affinity, we recognize four species of mylagaulids distributed throughout Oregon and Nevada from the late Hemingfordian through to the early late Hemphillian: Alphagaulus vetus, Hesperogaulus gazini, Hesperogaulus wilsoni, and a new species from the genus Hesperogaulus. All species are known from large sample sizes of isolated premolars, allowing consideration of ontogenetic variation in determining the key morphological differences that allow recognition of different species. Although the number of enamel lakes varies within a given taxon, the presence of some of these lakes is taxonomically significant. The now famous virgin headspace experiment from late Braja D. Mookherjee and Subha Patel, and its use in the creation of scent 'Virgin No 1' by Christophe Laudamiel and Christoph Hornetz for the novel by Patrick Süskind, and the movie by Tom Tykwer 'Perfume--The Story of a Murderer' (Constantin Film-Thierry Mugler Parfums-IFF, 2006) is discussed. Another fragrance from the luxury coffret, 'Salon Rouge', is described as well, illustrating how molecules and natural ingredients can be utilized, not only to create innovative or artistic fragrance compositions, but also to provide fundamental consumer education, improving the public image both of Chemistry and Perfumery.  相似文献

Simple models are constructed to describe the rate of mating in insect populations. The models are based on the assumption of random mate-searching in a closed habitat, including four parameters, i.e., population size, sex ratio, searching efficiency and male's capacity on mating frequency. The modes of effects of these parameters on the rate of mating are analyzed and some principles deduced are discussed in relation to the mating process in natural populations.  相似文献

With shifts in island area, isolation, and cycles of island fusion–fission, the role of Quaternary sea‐level oscillations as drivers of diversification is complex and not well understood. Here, we conduct parallel comparisons of population and species divergence between two island areas of equivalent size that have been affected differently by sea‐level oscillations, with the aim to understand the micro‐ and macroevolutionary dynamics associated with sea‐level change. Using genome‐wide datasets for a clade of seven Amphiacusta ground cricket species endemic to the Puerto Rico Bank (PRB), we found consistently deeper interspecific divergences and higher population differentiation across the unfragmented Western PRB, in comparison to the currently fragmented Eastern PRB that has experienced extreme changes in island area and connectivity during the Quaternary. We evaluate alternative hypotheses related to the microevolutionary processes (population splitting, extinction, and merging) that regulate the frequency of completed speciation across the PRB. Our results suggest that under certain combinations of archipelago characteristics and taxon traits, the repeated changes in island area and connectivity may create an opposite effect to the hypothesized “species pump” action of oscillating sea levels. Our study highlights how a microevolutionary perspective can complement current macroecological work on the Quaternary dynamics of island biodiversity.  相似文献

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic and one of the most common metabolic diseases affecting large proportion of world population. Diabetes-induced changes in lipid and renal parameters are major risk factors contributing to diabetic complications such as diabetic nephropathy and cardiovascular diseases. Due to adverse effects associated with pharmacological intervention in the T2DM treatment, there is an increased interest in the research focussing on identifying novel plant based therapeutic agents. Here we report the effects of various coconut products on diabetic, lipid and renal parameters in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rat model. Diabetic rats demonstrated a significant increase in serum glucose, and glycated haemoglobin levels (HbA1c). Lipid parameters including triglycerides, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-cholesterol) and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-cholesterol) were found to be significantly increased, while high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol) was significantly declined in diabetic rats. Diabetic rats also displayed increased serum and kidney creatinine, urea, and total protein levels and increased urine glucose, urea, albumin and creatinine levels. Contrastingly, treatment with virgin and filtered coconut oils, coconut water and coconut milk resulted in a significant reversal in the levels of above studied parameters in diabetic rats. Further, these coconut products markedly prevented diabetes induced histopathological changes in kidney tissue. Collectively, the data demonstrate the antidiabetic, hypolipidemic and renal protective properties of various coconut products and underscore the importance of regular consumption of plant based medicinal products in the treatment of T2DM and its complications.  相似文献

目的探讨妊娠妇女与无性生活女性阴道分泌物中菌群结构差异,为临床女性泌尿生殖系统疾病研究提供可靠的依据。方法运用高通量二代测序技术检测20例妊娠妇女和29例无性生活女性阴道分泌物中微生物;采用秩和检验进行组间显著性差异分析,使用生物信息学软件进行数据处理。结果 49份样本共注释出14个门、23个纲、33个目、28个科、38个属和23个种水平物种。妊娠妇女与无性生活女性阴道分泌物中菌群结构差异显著。妊娠妇女在种水平仅有Atopobium vaginae、Campylobacter ureolyticus、Lactobacillus coleohominis、德氏乳杆菌、瑞氏乳杆菌、惰性乳杆菌、罗伊乳杆菌、白假丝酵母菌和近平滑假丝酵母菌共9个物种。结论妊娠能引起女性阴道分泌物菌群结构发生改变,且菌种数量明显减少。Lactobacillus coleohominis和德氏乳杆菌可能在维持妊娠妇女阴道菌群平衡和自净作用中起到关键性作用。  相似文献

Pope John Paul II's canonization, in 2002, of Juan Diego, the Indian to whom the Virgin of Guadalupe first appeared, was variously interpreted by sections of Mexican society as an acknowledgement of the indigenous element in Mexican Catholicism and thus a restitution of past wrongs; conversely, as a final domestication of the Indian; and as an evangelical move against a resurgent Latin American Protestantism. The canonization rites were nested within political ceremonies staged, controversially, to anoint a new presidency. This broader political message was in turn challenged in the media and on the streets. In this article, I show how a major public event can articulate the life of a complex, culturally diverse society. I identify a syncretic effect produced by the struggle for ritual control. And I take a comparative view of syncretism, drawing on Javanese ethnography to suggest common mechanisms of meaning making.  相似文献

The ability of virgin Drosophila melanogaster adults to retain eggs is thought to be an adaptation to persisting in temperate areas, based on differences in this trait between European and African populations, and based on seasonal changes in this trait in France. By retaining eggs in the absence of males and under conditions of poorer nutrition (conditions common in temperate areas during colder months), females reduce the wastage of resources and increase their probability of surviving spring into summer, enabling them to initiate summer population expansions. To test for variation in virgin egg retention along a climatic gradient, we characterized clinal variation in strains collected from eastern Australia extending from temperate Tasmania to tropical northern Queensland. Despite testing a large number of strains and repeated testing of the cline ends, we did not detect any evidence for clinal variation in virgin egg retention. Therefore although D. melanogaster in temperate Australia overwinter at the adult stage, there is no evidence for selection on virgin retention capacity producing clinal patterns. This contrasts with other evidence for clinal variation in egg production patterns over winter.  相似文献

We visually observed fish traps in situ to identify the habitats exploited by the U.S. Virgin Islands fishery and to document species composition and abundance in traps by habitat. Fishers set more traps in algal plains than in any other habitat around St. John. Coral reefs, traditionally targeted by fishers, accounted for only 16 % of traps. Traps in algal plain contained the highest number of fishes per trap and the greatest numbers of preferred food species. Traps on coral reefs contained the most species, 41 of the 59 taxa observed in the study. Acanthurus coeruleus was the most abundant species and Acanthuridae the most abundant family observed in traps. Piscivore numbers were low and few serranids were observed. Traps in algal plain contained the most fishes as a result of: ecological changes such as shifts in habitat use, mobility of species and degradation of nearshore habitat (fishery independent); and, catchability of fishes and long-term heavy fishing pressure (fishery dependent). The low number of serranids per trap, dominance of the piscivore guild by a small benthic predator, Epinephelus guttatus, and dominance of trap contents overall by a small, fast-growing species of a lower trophic guild, Acanthurus coeruleus, all point to years of intense fishing pressure.  相似文献
