Summary We have made pairwise comparisons between the coding sequences of 21 genes from coldblooded vertebrates and 41 homologous sequences from warm-blooded vertebrates. In the case of 12 genes, GC levels were higher, especially in third codon positions, in warm-blooded vertebrates compared to cold-blooded vertebrates. Six genes showed no remarkable difference in GC level and three showed a lower level. In the first case, higher GC levels appear to be due to a directional fixation of mutations, presumably under the influence of body temperature (see Bernardi and Bernardi 1986b). These GC-richer genes of warm-blooded vertebrates were located, in all cases studied, in isochores higher in GC than those comprising the homologous genes of cold-blooded vertebrates. In the third case, increases appear to be due to a limited formation of GC-rich isochores which took place in some cold-blooded vertebrates after the divergence of warm-blooded vertebrates. The directional changes in the GC content of coding sequences and the evolutionary conservation of both increased and unchanged GC levels are in keeping with the existence of compositional constraints on the genome.  相似文献

Two computation methods are explained; theirobject is the estimation of the velocity of animals which are known by their footprints, and in the case of the first method, by their skeletons as well. The first method is based on the compound pendulum theory, because during the slow walking gait, the motion of the leg is similar to the oscillation of a pendulum, for the computation of the velocity (v), are considered: moment of inertia (I), radius of gyration (P) and period (T), time in seconds to cover one stride (E) in the case the maximum angle of divarication (δ) of the leg with the vertical is ≤20°. A comparison with the formula of Alexander (1976) is discussed. The second method concerns saltator animals. It is based on the fondamental laws of dynamics. With the length of the jump (E) it is possible to estimate the velocity of the trackmaker (v) and the height of the jump (K). For the vertebrates the angle of the trajectory with the horizontal plan (α) is between 20 and 45°. Thus, the result of this method is an interval of estimation in which the velocity is included. These methods do not give precise results. But these approximations supply valid informations on the velocity of extinct or living animals and can lead to the estimation of their maximum speed if the parameters E, T, vary. The problem of the errors is also discussed. It is shown that the errors in estimating the parameters have a no significant influence on the results.  相似文献

The evolutionary relationship of muscle and nonmuscle actin isoforms in deuterostomia was studied by the isolation and characterization of two actin genes from the cephalochordate Branchiostoma lanceolatum and two from the hemichordate Saccoglossus kowalevskii The Branchiostoma genes specify a muscle and a nonmuscle actin type, respectively. Together with earlier results on muscle actins from vertebrates and urochordates, a N-terminal sequence signature is defined for chordate muscle actins. These diagnostic amino acid residues separate the chordates from the echinoderms and other metazoa. Although the two Saccoglossus actins characterized so far lack the diagnostic residues, in line with the presumptive phylogenetic position of hemichordates outside the chordates, a definitive conclusion can only be expected once the full complement of actin genes of Saccoglossus is established. Comparison of the intron patterns of the various deuterostomic actin genes shows that intron 330-3, which is present in all vertebrate genes, is conspicuously absent from nonvertebrate genes. The possible origin of this intron is discussed. Received: 4 July 1997 / Accepted: 29 August 1997  相似文献

Although fishes are ectotherms they are nevertheless able to thermoregulate behaviorally by selecting appropriate water temperatures (1). In a temperature gradient fish will congregate to a species-specific range of preferred temperature (“final thermal referendum”) which is unaffected by previous thermal history of the individual (2,3). Several aquatic (and terrestrial) ectothermic vertebrates have been found to exhibit “behavioral fever” which is manifested as an increase in preferred temperature above the final thermal preferendum (4). Fever can be elicited by pyrogens: whole bacteria (alive or killed), components of bacterial cellwall (endotoxins), endogenous pyrogens, prostaglandins or from several other sources (5). Since the results with fever induction in fish using whole bacteria or endotoxins are very scarce the aim of the present work was to compare possible thermoregulatory effects of endotoxins and prostaglandins in the same species (Lepomis gibbosus, L.) by means of identical methods.

Myeloid bodies of the retinal pigment epitheliumI. Distribution, morphology and connections with cytoplasmic organels
Summary The morphology (shape, dimensions, structure) of the myeloid bodies of the retinal pigment epithelium and their distribution through several classes of vertebrates is described. The criteria of identity of these bodies are defined: They are never membrane-bounded, they are in direct continuity with the smooth endoplasmic reticulum, they are made of flattened discs linked two and two by junction complexes. They are in direct relation with the nuclear membrane. The confusion between myeloïd bodies and other structures, like phagosomes, is discussed. The retina of Mammals does not contain myeloïd bodies.

The relationship between body size and risk of extinction has been the focus of much recent attention; however, it has only been stated for a few groups inhabiting restricted areas. Based on the IUCN list and other public records, we suggest that the relationship between vulnerability and body size is a trend among all vertebrates, especially tetrapods. In the case of fish, our results show that body size may be subordinate to another factor that we named concealment. Other plausible explanations about this difference could be the human preference for large terrestrial vertebrates and/or the inappropriateness of the current IUCN listing criteria for fish species.  相似文献

Molecular Phylogeny of Metazoan Intermediate Filament Proteins   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
We have cloned cytoplasmic intermediate filament (IF) proteins from a large number of invertebrate phyla using cDNA probes, the monoclonal antibody IFA, peptide sequence information, and various RT-PCR procedures. Novel IF protein sequences reported here include the urochordata and nine protostomic phyla, i.e., Annelida, Brachiopoda, Chaetognatha, Echiura, Nematomorpha, Nemertea, Platyhelminthes, Phoronida, and Sipuncula. Taken together with the wealth of data on IF proteins of vertebrates and the results on IF proteins of Cephalochordata, Mollusca, Annelida, and Nematoda, two IF prototypes emerge. The L-type, which includes 35 sequences from 11 protostomic phyla, shares with the nuclear lamins the long version of the coil 1b subdomain and, in most cases, a homology segment of some 120 residues in the carboxyterminal tail domain. The S-type, which includes all four subfamilies (types I to IV) of vertebrate IF proteins, lacks 42 residues in the coil 1b subdomain and the carboxyterminal lamin homology segment. Since IF proteins from all three phyla of the chordates have the 42-residue deletion, this deletion arose in a progenitor prior to the divergence of the chordates into the urochordate, cephalochordate, and vertebrate lineages, possibly already at the origin of the deuterostomic branch. Four phyla recently placed into the protostomia on grounds of their 18S rDNA sequences (Brachiopoda, Nemertea, Phoronida, and Platyhelminthes) show IF proteins of the L-type and fit by sequence identity criteria into the lophotrochozoic branch of the protostomia. Mexico's Late Neogene mammal faunas are largely known from localities in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt; those from other morphotectonic provinces are few and far apart. Thus, the discovery of Late Miocene vertebrates in western Sierra Madre Oriental at San Luis Potosí, the Paso del Águila local fauna, significantly adds to this meager record. The assemblage was collected from the floodplain facies of the San Nicolás Formation, a ∼1100-m thick, dominantly fluviolacustrine and calcilithitic, 15°–20° NE dipping sequence preserved in the Peotillos-Tolentino Graben, between 22°11’–22°19’ N and 100°30’–100°39° W. It includes remains of cf. Trachemys, a small to medium-sized emydid chelonian, a large camelid, a small cervid and a new species of the equini Pliohippus s.s., comparable in size, cranial morphology and odontographic characters to the Clarendonian-Early Hemphillian horses of the Pliohippus clade. Ar-Ar dates from ash-fall tuffs seemingly above and below the fossiliferous strata, bracket the age between 12.33 and 7.41 Ma (i.e., late Middle to Late Miocene), that is, within the Late Clarendonian-Early Hemphillian NALMA interval, making this fauna the first in Mexico from this age. The Paso del Águila local fauna is at least partly correlative with the Hemphillian local faunas from the TMVB and adjacent areas (e.g., Rancho El Ocote, Guanajuato and Tecolotlán, Jalisco), the Central Plateau (e.g., Arroyo Los Fragmentos, Zacatecas), and the Sierra Madre Occidental (e.g., Yepómera). Elsewhere, it is broadly correlative with the Late Clarendonian-Early Hemphillian faunas from the California Coast Ranges (e.g., North Tejon Hills, Ricardo and Dove Springs in the Mohave Desert), and the Gulf Coast Plain, Florida (McGehee Farm and Mixon). The Paso del Águila local fauna was part of a subtropical savannah and pine-oak forest (with a well-developed understory) biome that thrived on a climate regime much more humid than today.  相似文献
