Summary The phenomenon of interspecific incompatibility between various wild tuber-bearing and closely related non-tuber-bearing Solanum species was studied. One area of investigation included an examination of possible protein interactions in the incompatibility reaction using SDS electrophoresis. Pollen tube inhibition and morphology were examined in conjunction with biochemical analysis. Two sets of crosses were examined: interspecific tuber-bearing species crosses and interspecific tuber-bearing × non-tuber-bearing species crosses. These crosses had consistent pollen tube inhibition in the upper one-third of the style. The upper third of the styles of incompatibly pollinated, compatibly pollinated, and unpollinated styles was studied under fluorescence microscopy to observe pollen tube growth and morphology. Interspecific tuber-bearing × non-tuber-bearing species crosses demonstrated consistent pollen tube inhibition just below the stigma with frequent pollen tube swelling and bursting and extensive callose deposition along the pollen tube wall. Interspecific tuber-bearing species crosses had pollen tube inhibition further down the style with pollen tube tip tapering and extensive callose deposition. Stylar proteins of the lower two-thirds of the styles were analyzed with SDS electrophoresis. No unique protein differences were found to be specifically associated with the interspecific incompatibility reaction in this portion of the style.Cooperative investigation of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, and the Wisconsin Experiment Station. Hedyotis caerulea, a spring flowering herb widely distributed in eastern North America, has distylous flowers that differ by a number of morphological and physiological traits. The presence of a strong incompatibility system is indicated by the fact that intramorph crosses or self-pollinations produced little or no seed and intermorph crosses produced copious seed. An unusual homostyle was located that had most floral characters intermediate between pin and thrum flowers, although its pollen size was that of pin. The homostyle was only moderately self-compatible, and its pollen did not behave as pin pollen on thrum stigmas. It appears that, despite their intermediate position and morphology, the homostyle stigmas were fundamentally pin. Although the exceptional rarity of the homostyle suggests that it is an inadaptive failure, workers should watch for its further occurrence since additional study of it may provide insights into the genetic and physiological basis of heterostyly in theRubiaceae.  相似文献

Vegetative reproduction of Chondracanthus chamissoi by means of fragmentation and re-attachment of thalli is considered an effective strategy for maintaining natural populations of this species. Here, we evaluate the effects of (1) time of drifting thallus, (2) type of substratum, and (3) photon flux density, on the re-attachment capacity of thallus fragments of C. chamissoi. The results show that re-attachment decreases with the time after detachment, and was higher at the lower photon flux densities tested (10 and 40 μmol photons m−2s−1), and on calcareous substratum. Secondary attachment discs are formed along the entire surface of the fragment.  相似文献

Trichoderma harzianum is the collective name of a set of asexual fungal strains which exhibit heterogeneity in genome structure, DNA sequence and behavior. Contour-clamped homogeneous field (CHEF) electrophoresis of the chromosomes of ten isolates of T. harzianum revealed six clearly distinct electrophoretic karyotypes. Of the ten isolates analyzed, four (GH12, G109, Y and YF) could be classified in a single group with identical karyotypes, while the strains T35 and 315 formed a second group. The genome size characteristic of the different isolates fell into a broad range varying from 29.6 to 56.1 Mb. Gene assignments to the resolved chromosomes showed that all genes analyzed were localized on equivalent chromosomes in the isolates belonging to the same group. Analysis of randomly amplified polymorphic DNAs from the ten isolates confirmed the classification into groups and allowed us to distinguish between isolates T35 and 315, as well as between isolates GH12, G109, Y and YF. Direct confrontation assays using isolates of the same group showed compatible interactions, whereas the same experiment carried out with isolates of different groups showed an incompatible interaction characterized by an area of cell damage. Microscopic observation of the compatible interactions showed hyphal fusions between the isolates, similar to those described for vegetative compatible groups in other fungi. The molecular karyotypes correlated well with the compatibility of the isolates. In addition, we have evaluated both electrophoretic karyotype and randomly amplified polymorphic DNAs analysis as criteria for grouping isolates within the genus according to their capacity for biocontrol of plant pathogens. Question: Different plant growth forms may have distinctly different functioning in ecosystems. Association of phenological patterns with growth form will therefore help elucidate the role of phenology in an ecosystem. We ask whether growth forms of common vascular plants differ in terms of vegetative and flowering phenology, and if such phenological differences are consistent across environmental gradients caused by landscape‐scale topography. Location: A high‐latitude alpine landscape in Finnmark County, Norway (70°N). Methods: We assessed vegetative and flowering phenology repeatedly in five growth forms represented by 11 common vascular plant species across an altitudinal gradient and among differing slope aspects. Results: Species phenology clustered well according to growth form, and growth form strongly explained variation in both flowering and vegetative phenology. Altitude and aspect were poor predictors of phenological variation. Vegetative phenology of the growth forms, ranked from slowest to fastest, was in the order evergreen shrubs <sedges‐deciduous shrubs <grasses <forbs, while a reverse ranking was found for flowering phenology. Conclusion: Growth form‐specific phenological patterns are associated with fundamentally different abilities for resource acquisition and resource conservation. The weak effect of landscape‐scale topographic factors indicates that variation within growth forms is mainly influenced by local environmental factors not accounted for in this study. On the basis of these results, we argue that growth forms should be considered as predictors of phenology together with the customary use of topography and normalized difference vegetation index, especially when assessing the role of phenology in an ecosystem.  相似文献

The age structures of both native and transplanted populations of the perennial herb, trout lily (Erythronium americanum), were analysed and found to have age-independent mortality rates. Cohort survival was greatest in populations growing on hardwood forested flood plains (60%), less in populations from gently sloping terraces with pit-and-mound microrelief (53%) and smallest (45%) for colonies on slopes steeper than 15°. The former habitat-type is the optimum for trout lily in Nova Scotia and in it the proportion of flowering bulbs can reach 35%. The second named habitat is widespread and characterised by fewer flowering bulbs (5–10%). In the latter habitat flowering bulbs are uniformly rare. Trout lily bulbs tend to be sterile until at least their eighth year. The high mortality rates of populations on steeply sloping, hardwood forested ground ensure minimal survival of bulbs beyond their sixth year. In the other two named habitats sufficient numbers of bulbs reach ages of 8 or 9 years for some to make the translation from the sterile to the flowering form. In all the habitats studied in Nova Scotia, propagation is typically by either runners or, less importantly, daughter bulbs, with the peak of activity in the bulbs third and fourth years. The plants of flood plains showed the greatest rates of vegetative propagation, by cohort, but many of the bulbs from colonies growing on steep slopes lacked runners or daughter bulbs. As all bulbs for the transplant experiments came from a single clone it can be concluded that trout lily plants in Nova Scotia have a sufficiently large genetic endowment for them to behave in the same manner as native populations of the species in the several habitats represented in the province.The figures were drafted in the cartography section of the University of Canterbury. Summary The formation and subsequent growth of roots by cuttings of poinsettia, hydrangea, rose and azalea in various propagation media, Jiffy-7, Jiffy-9 and Grodan under different conditions of aeration was investigated. The interrelationships of the effects of air content of the media, temperature and light intensity on the rooting of poinsettia cuttings was also studied.With low air contents (0 cm moisture tension) in the propagation media the formation and growth of roots was strongly inhibited. The rooting performance of rose appeared to be less affected by the poor aeration. Increasing air content improved rooting but best results were obtained at moisture tensions of 4 to 8 cm. Rooting seems to be better correlated with oxygen diffusion rate (ODR) than with air content.For poinsettia cuttings the optimum temperature for rooting was 24 to 28°C. At low temperatures rooting was delayed while at higher temperatures it was almost completely inhibited. Callus formation increased with temperature but decreased with increasing moisture tension. Conditions which induced large callus formation inhibited root formation.High light intensity during rooting reduced overall rooting performance and the inhibition was most pronounced in conjunction with high moisture tensions.Report No. 255.  相似文献

Woody colonization of grasslands is often associated with changes in abiotic or biotic conditions or a combination of both. Widely used as fodder and litter in the past traditional agro-pastoral system, ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) has now become a colonizing species of mountain grasslands in the French Pyrenees. Its present distribution is dependent on past human activities and it is locally controlled by propagule pressure and abiotic conditions. However, even when all favourable conditions are met, all the potentially colonizable grasslands are not invaded. We hypothesize that management practices should play a crucial role in the control of ash colonization. From empirical field surveys we have compared the botanical composition of a set of grasslands (present and former) differing in management practices and level of ash colonization. We have displayed a kind of successional gradient positively linked to both ash cover and height but not to the age of trees. We have tested the relationships between ash presence in grassland and management types i.e. cutting and/or grazing, management intensity and some grassland communities’ features i.e. total and local specific richness and species heterogeneity. Mixed use (cutting and grazing) is negatively linked to ash presence in grassland whereas grazing alone positively. Mixed use and high grazing intensity are directly preventing ash seedlings establishment, when low grazing intensity is allowing ash seedlings establishment indirectly through herbaceous vegetation neglected by livestock. Our results show the existence of a limit between grasslands with and without established ashes corresponding to a threshold in the intensity of use. Under this threshold, when ash is established, the colonization process seems to become irreversible. Ash possesses the ability of compensatory growth and therefore under a high grazing intensity develops a subterranean vegetative reproduction. However the question remains at which stage of seedling development and grazing intensity these strategies could occur.  相似文献

Theoretical studies claim that if co-occurring species have very different mobilities this will result in greater small-scale species richness, but empirical evidence is still lacking. We measured horizontal vegetative mobility (VM) of 48 herbaceous understory species and estimated small-scale species richness in early and late successional boreonemoral herb-rich coniferous forests in central Estonia. VM of erosulate growth forms was significantly higher than that of hemi-rosette and rosette growth forms. Erosulate species exhibited higher mobility in young stands, but their relative and total cover was considerably higher in old stands. Local plant richness (in 1 × 1 m plots) correlated positively with the variability of VM of species in a plot—larger differences in VM resulted in a higher number of coexisting species. Our results thus suggest that species differences in VM can contribute to small-scale coexistence by providing different ways to colonise empty space.
