The palm weevil, Rhynchophorus palmarum (L.), was collected in cocoons from red ring-diseased coconut palms (Cocos nucifera L.) in Trinidad and Tobago. Juveniles of five species of nematodes were extracted from the genitalia and macerated bodies of newly emerged adults of the palm weevil: Rhadinaphelenchus cocophilus (Cobb) Goodey (the red ring nematode), Teratorhabditis sp., Diplogasteritus sp., Mononchoides sp., and Bursaphelenchus sp. Over 90% of newly emerged weevil females and males were infested internally with red ring nematode juveniles, and over 47% of the weevils contained more than 1,000 red ring nematodes each. There was no significant correlation between weevil body length and the number of red ring nematodes carried internally by each weevil. Teratorhabditis sp. and Diplogasteritus sp. were extracted from over 50% of the palm weevils, and Monochoides sp. and Bursaphelenchus sp. were found in a small proportion of the weevils. Field-collected adult weevils were also internally and externally infested with a Rhabditis sp., which was not observed in or on weevils allowed to emerge from field-collected cocoons.  相似文献

Reproduction and growth of the vermilion snapper, Rhomboplites aurorubens, were studied in Trinidad and Tobago. The smallest individual caught measured 145mm total length (TL) and all fish appeared to be mature. It was not possible to precisely determine size at first maturity due to the use of macroscopic techniques. The smallest spent male and female measured 181 and 211mm TL respectively, suggesting a size at first maturity below these sizes. Spawning occurred throughout the year, with a period of peak spawning from about June to November in the rainy season when river runoff increased. Sagittal otolith sections were used for age determination and the opaque ring, which was counted as the annulus, was deposited from January to May in the dry season. A total of 11 age groups between the ages of 2–12 years (155–505mm total length) were found. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters were: L=532mm, K=0.13y–1, and t0=–0.17, where L is the asymptotic length, K is the growth coefficient and t0 is the theoretical age at zero length. The relationship between weight (WT) and length (TL) was WT=3.43×10–5 TL2.82. Vermilion snapper in this study area appears to grow slower and attain a smaller asymptotic length, but has a longer lifespan than found in populations in higher latitudes. This may be attributed to different levels of exploitation, which may be higher in the latter areas.  相似文献

Aim The extent to which cryptic species contribute to neotropical diversity remains inadequately investigated. Based on its highly distinctive morphology, the giant harlequin beetle, Acrocinus longimanus, is currently described as a single species, ranging from southern Mexico to northern Argentina. However, the discovery of cryptic species in Cordylochernes scorpioides, a pseudoscorpion with obligate dependence on the harlequin beetle for dispersal, strongly suggests the existence of barriers to gene flow in A. longimanus. The aim of this study was therefore to determine whether levels of DNA divergence between geographical populations provided evidence of genetically distinct lineages in the harlequin beetle. Location Trinidad and Panamá. Methods Sequencing of 1245 bp of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene of A. longimanus from seven locations in Trinidad and Panamá. Results Mitochondrial haplotype diversity in the harlequin beetle shows limited evidence of geographical structuring, with a maximum sequence divergence between populations of only 1.29%. This is an order of magnitude less than the level of COI divergence between harlequin beetle riding pseudoscorpions from the same geographical locations. Main conclusions The molecular data on populations from northern South America and Panamá are consistent with the current, morphologically based classification of A. longimanus as a single, pan‐neotropical species. In addition, the relatively low level of population divergence detected in this study indicates that speciation in the hitchhiking pseudoscorpion has occurred in the absence of significant barriers to gene flow in its beetle host. It is proposed that, in the harlequin beetle, the phylogenetic signal of colonization and vicariance associated with the formation of the Isthmus of Panamá has been obscured, although not fully erased, by historical and contemporary gene flow.  相似文献

Two sphecid wasps, Sceliphron asiaticum (L.) and S. fistularium (Dahlbom), which build mud nests and capture spider prey, had overlapping but distinctly different distributions in Trinidad. Sceliphron asiaticum was associated with drier (<2000 mm mean annual precipitation) and less forested areas. The analysis of existing data on these species revealed a similar differential distribution throughout the neotropics. Based on the dissection of their old nests collected at 42 sites in Trinidad, retrospective life tables were constructed and estimates of fecundity made. Sceliphron asiaticum tended to form denser nesting associations and, while most of the common parasitoids were shared, had overall higher developmental mortality. Although such mortality was density-dependent in both species, where the two wasps nested together mortality from Melittobia (Eulophidae, Chalcidoidea) was higher in S. asiaticum . Both species were protarrhenotokous and had similar field fecundities (7–8/♀), but the rate of oviposition may be greater in S. asiaticum since far less mud was used in the construction of its cells. Both species had >50° mortality of the females between emergence and starting to nest. The regulation of numbers of these wasps in relation to that of S. assimile (Dahlbom) in Jamaica is discussed.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to identify oil-based formulating agents (paraffinic oil, palm oil and emulsifiable adjuvant oils (EAOs)) for Metarhizium anisopliae that were superior to water with simple surfactants using a germination test and a bioassay against Boophilus microplus. Germination of conidia in all formulations, except 10% coconut EAO, produced more than 68% germination at 24 h and nearly 100% at 48 h. Coconut oil (average survival time (AST)=4.6±0.28 days) and 10% liquid paraffin EAO (AST=4.4±0.15 days) enhanced the pathogenicity of M. anisopliae to B. microplus relative to water (AST=8.4±0.42 days). M. anisopliae in 10% liquid paraffin EAO was the most effective formulation having a moderately high germination after 24 h and a low AST as well as a high AST in the control. In the second experiment, germination of conidia in 2% liquid paraffin EAO and 2% Cropspray was higher than in 2% Codacide oil at 24 h, however, all treatments reached 100% germination after 48 h. The ASTs of the EAO based M. anisopliae formulations (Average AST=6.4±0.54 days) were similar but lower that the ASTs of the controls (Average AST=9.6±0.28 days).  相似文献

Diel landing periodicity (biting cycle) of domestic Aedes aegypti (L.) in Trinidad, West Indies, was monitored using human bait during January-August 1980. The periodicity of females was predominantly diurnal (95.2% arriving during daylight or twilight) and bimodal, with consistent peaks at 06.00-07.00 and 17.00-18.00 hours. The diel periodicities at indoor and outdoor sites were virtually identical. Larger numbers of adults were collected outside than inside houses. It is recommended that the time of insecticidal ULV adulticiding should coincide with peaks in landing periodicity of the Ae.aegypti adults.  相似文献

Aim Most studies of avian insular adaptations have focused on oceanic islands, which may not allow characters that are insular adaptations to be teased apart from those that benefit dispersal and colonization. Using birds on continental islands, we investigated characters that evolved in situ in response to insular environments created by late Pleistocene sea level rise. Location Trinidad and Tobago and continental South America. Methods We weighed fresh flight muscles and measured museum skeletal specimens of seven species of birds common to the continental islands of Trinidad and Tobago. Results When corrected for body size, study species exhibited significantly smaller flight muscles, sterna and sternal keels on Tobago than on larger Trinidad and continental South America. Tobago populations were more ‘insular’ in their morphologies than conspecifics on Trinidad or the continent in other ways as well, including having longer bills, longer wings, longer tails and longer legs. Main conclusions We hypothesize that the longer bills enhance foraging diversity, the longer wings and tails compensate for the smaller pectoral assemblage (allowing for retention of volancy, but with a probable reduction in flight power and speed), and the longer legs expand perching ability. Each of these differences is likely to be related to the lower diversity and fewer potential predators and competitors on Tobago compared with Trinidad. These patterns of smaller flight muscles and larger bills, legs, wings and tails in island birds are not the results of selection for island dispersal and colonization, but probably arose from selection pressures acting on populations already inhabiting these islands.  相似文献

Sixty-four and fifty-six road dust samples were collected over two seasons from various locations throughout the island of Trinidad and analyzed for the 16 priority PAHs. Total PAH concentrations ranged from 21 ng g?1 to 4723 ng g?1 (d.w.) for the rainy season and 36 ng g?1 to 2428 ng g?1 (d.w.) for the dry season. The Σ4–6 ring PAHs accounted for 88% and 63% of the 16 PAHs in road dust samples for the rainy and dry seasons, respectively. PAH diagnostic ratios, principal component analysis, and cluster analysis revealed both pyrogenic and petrogenic sources in road dust for the two seasons, with major contributions from vehicular emissions. Contributions from incomplete combustion and petroleum sources were also identified. The estimated Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk (ILCR) associated with exposure to road dust PAHs in Trinidad for the rainy and dry seasons indicated no potential risk for both children and adults, as denoted by ILCR values lower than 10?6.  相似文献

We used partial sequences of mitochondrial 16S and cytochrome oxidase I genes to perform a phylogenetic study of collared frogs (Anura: Aromobatidae: Mannophryne ), a genus endemic to Venezuela and the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. We analysed 1.2 kb from 13 of the 15 described species of Mannophryne . Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses support the monophyly of Mannophryne . Mannophryne consists of three deeply differentiated clades that split from each other in a relatively short period of time. The diversification of Mannophryne occurred well before the glacial-interglacial periods of the Quaternary. Our data support the taxonomic validity of M. olmonae , a species endemic to Tobago Island. Mannophryne olmonae is more closely related to the continental species Mannophryne riveroi than to the Trinidad island endemic Mannophryne trinitatis . As in most tropical clades of frogs, molecular evidence indicates that species richness in Mannophryne is largely underestimated and, consequently, current priorities for conservation are inadequate.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 97 , 185–199.  相似文献

Parasite host range can be influenced by physiological, behavioral, and ecological factors. Combining data sets on host–parasite associations with phylogenetic information of the hosts and the parasites involved can generate evolutionary hypotheses about the selective forces shaping host range. Here, we analyzed associations between the nest‐parasitic flies in the genus Philornis and their host birds on Trinidad. Four of ten Philornis species were only reared from one species of bird. Of the parasite species with more than one host bird species, P. falsificus was the least specific and P. deceptivus the most specific attacking only Passeriformes. Philornis flies in Trinidad thus include both specialists and generalists, with varying degrees of specificity within the generalists. We used three quantities to more formally compare the host range of Philornis flies: the number of bird species attacked by each species of Philornis, a phylogenetically informed host specificity index (Poulin and Mouillot's STD), and a branch length‐based STD. We then assessed the phylogenetic signal of these measures of host range for 29 bird species. None of these measures showed significant phylogenetic signal, suggesting that clades of Philornis did not differ significantly in their ability to exploit hosts. We also calculated two quantities of parasite species load for the birds – the parasite species richness, and a variant of the STD index based on nodes rather than on taxonomic levels – and assessed the signal of these measures on the bird phylogeny. We did not find significant phylogenetic signal for the parasite species load or the node‐based STD index. Finally, we calculated the parasite associations for all bird pairs using the Jaccard index and regressed these similarity values against the number of nodes in the phylogeny separating bird pairs. This analysis showed that Philornis on Trinidad tend to feed on closely related bird species more often than expected by chance.  相似文献
