Abstract. Using the results of a total floristic survey of two veld types (Arid Sweet Bushveld and Mixed Bushveld) in the northeastern Transvaal, South Africa, we linked median annual rainfall from a surface response model to each of 139 samples. The samples had been classified floristically into 15 plant communities. These communities represent two broad divisions, corresponding with the concepts embodied in the two veld types. Using contingency tables, we defined the conditions of median annual rainfall and elevation for each of the veld types. Using a geographic analysis system we predicted the distribution of the veld types in an area of 120 000 km2 outside the study area. The predicted distribution was validated by comparison with a digitized version of the Acocks map. We conclude that the defined conditions of median annual rainfall and elevation provide confident criteria for the definition of these veld types.  相似文献

Home range and association patterns of elephants Loxodonta africana in private nature reserves adjacent to the Kruger National Park, South Africa, were determined over a period of six years by using radio telemetry. The minimum convex polygon (MCP) and harmonic mean (HM) methods were used for data processing. The minimum and maximum range areas required by females were estimated at 115 and 465 km2, respectively, whilst those of males varied between 157 and 342 km2. Core areas of females comprised on average 10·1% of the range areas as calculated by the MCP method. Range areas between females in the Klaserie and Timbavati Private Nature Reserves differed significantly. A significant difference in range size was also found between the male population (pooled data) and the females of the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve. Range areas increased from the wet to the dry season. Three male elephant categories were established, namely males utilizing the same area during the study period, those who shifted their range areas and individuals with very large range areas which frequented the area on an irregular basis. A loose relationship existed between males. Association between females can be attributed to kinship and not to the overlapping of range areas. Results indicated avoidance behaviour between females in their core areas, which might partially explain the ability of elephants to tolerate high densities. It is concluded that male elephant hunting should be approached with caution.  相似文献

Monitoring on the Lowveld reaches of the Olifants River, Limpopo River System, and its Steelpoort, Blyde, Klaserie and Selati tributaries was initiated in 2009. Analysis of the 2009–2015 data from four Olifants River sites showed deterioration in the river’s ecological condition between where it enters the Lowveld and where it enters the Kruger National Park, with a slight recovery within the Kruger National Park. Physico-chemical, aquatic macroinvertebrate and fish data collected in 2009–2015 at six sites on the Steelpoort, Blyde, Klaserie and Selati tributaries of the Olifants River corroborated the ecological condition of these tributaries. The Selati was the most polluted and was in a critically modified condition, whereas the Klaserie and Steelpoort were in fair condition and the Blyde was in good condition. The Selati appeared to have a significant negative impact on the water quality, macroinvertebrates and fish of the Olifants River within the Kruger National Park.  相似文献

We studied the impacts of eland density on the physiognomy of Combretum apiculatum . We divided the study area into two zones: high eland density zone (≤8 km from watering point) and low eland density zone (≥8 km from watering point). Eland density was determined in each zone using walking transects. Combretum apiculatum height and diameter and levels of eland damage were measured in each zone. Eland density was 1.92 and 0.86 km−2 for high and low-density zones respectively. We recorded 239 C. apiculatum trees, 138 in low-density zone and 101 in high-density zone. Mean C. apiculatum height was 2.88 ± 0.67 m and 5.05 ± 1.04 m for high and low eland density zones respectively. High eland density prevented the recruitment of C. apiculatum from the 2.6–5.5 m height class to the >5.6 m height class. Although extensive tree damage occurred at <2.5 m height stratum, C. apiculatum showed resilience as recruitment into the 2.6–5.5 m height class continued. We concluded that high eland density prevents recruitment of C. apiculatum to higher height classes while at the same time causing extensive tree damage at lower height strata.  相似文献

A method is presented whereby regional species are scored and ranked in order of regional conservation importance according to a number of different but complementary 'rarity' criteria. Approaches for determining regional occupancy (RO), relative taxonomic distinctiveness (RTD), relative endemism (RE) and relative vulnerability (RV) rankings for regional faunas are proposed. The continuous variable approach and resultant positively skewed 'rarity' scores suggest easy identification of regional priority species. These methods are collectively applied to a regional mammalian fauna in order to prioritize species for conservation action using a regional priority score (RPS). The proposed method is a comparative relational approach aimed at determining which species require the establishment of viable populations within a regional context. The two species afforded highest RPSs for the Transvaal region, South Africa, are Gunning's golden mole Amblysomus gunningi and Juliana's golden mole A. julianae. These two species are true endemics, with geographic ranges completely restricted to the region. Also of high regional conservation importance are the four-toed elephant shrew Petrodromus tetradactylus, pangolin Manis temminckii and aardvark Orycteropus afer. Although these species have low RE scores, they have high RTD and RV scores. The equal weightings given to the four components of 'rarity' ensures that species achieving a high score in any of these categories will be considered for regional priority listing. This approach is simple, explicit and repeatable, circumventing problems of scale.  相似文献

Enumeration of carbon stocks at benchmark sites is a necessary activity in assessing the potential carbon sequestration and possible generation of credits through restoration of intensively impacted sites. However, there is a lack of empirical studies throughout much of the savannas of sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa. We report an estimation of species specific and site biomass and carbon stocks, and general vegetation structural attributes from three protected areas along a rainfall gradient in the central lowveld, South Africa. Estimates of biomass and carbon stocks were effected through destructive sampling to establish locally derived allometric equations. There was a gradient of increasing woody density, height of the canopy, number of species, density of regenerative stems and a greater proportion of stems in small size classes from the arid locality to the mesic locality, with the semi-arid locality being intermediate. The proportion of spinescent species decreased with increasing rainfall. The mesic locality was significantly more woody than either the arid or semi-arid sites, having double the biomass, four times the density and 40% higher basal area. Above ground carbon pools were also higher; carbon stocks were approximately 9 t/ha for the arid and semi-arid sites and 18 t/ha for the mesic site.  相似文献

As part of a vegetation survey programme for nature conservation areas in South Africa, a survey of the plant communities of the mesic calcareous bottomland clays in the Manyeleti Game Reserve was undertaken. The Eucleo divinori — Acacietum nigricentis, a new association, is restricted to these soils. From a Braun-Blanquet analysis of the vegetation, two new subassociations, each with two variants, were identified and described. A quantitative assessment of the woody component of each syntaxon is presented. Ordinations based on the floristic and habitat data revealed the position of the syntaxa on an environmental gradient.  相似文献

Three lepidopteran stemborers, Busseola fusca Fuller (Noctuidae), Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Noctuidae), and Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Crambidae), were evaluated for their acceptability for oviposition and suitability for development by two populations of the larval endoparasitoid Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) occurring in the highveld (>1200 m) and lowveld (<600 m) regions of Zimbabwe. Mating studies were also conducted to determine reproductive compatibility between the populations. Both C. sesamiae populations preferred the noctuids to C. partellus for oviposition, possibly reflecting differences in evolutionary history. Although B. fusca was partially suitable for development of lowveld C. sesamiae, all three hosts were suitable for development of the highveld population. Crosses between highveld and lowveld C. sesamiae were compatible, and were generally not different from the intra-population crosses in developmental time, % adult emergence and sex ratio. However, broods were much larger when highveld males were used in the mating combinations. We conclude that although there is host overlap and probably a considerable degree of outbreeding between the two C. sesamiae populations, there are still significant genetic differences between them. Within Zimbabwe, it is unlikely that the deliberate introduction of either population outside its region of occurrence will give meaningful stemborer control.  相似文献
