Glass-beads (diam. = 250 μm) were buried 10 cm deep in the sediment of a stream. After an exposure of eight weeks, bacterial densities on the beads varied between 2.7 × 105 and 2.4 × 107/cm2, and the length of the fungal mycelium between 0.2 and 5.3 mm/cm2. Bacterial densities did not show any correlation with the DOC content of the water, but were positively correlated with respiration on the beads. Fungal mycelium was negatively correlated with water temperature. Acid hydrolysis of stream-exposed beads released sugars and amino acids, whose combined carbon content exceeded that of the microbial cells by a factor of at least 4. Gut extracts of Gammarus tigrinus and Tipula caloptera released amino acids and sugars from stream-exposed beads.  相似文献

Predicting leatherjacket population frequencies in Northern Ireland   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Annual surveys of leatherjacket (Tipula spp. larvae) were made in Northern Ireland to provide warning of the likelihood of damage to spring sown cereals after grass. A climate-based multiple regression model was developed to estimate mean annual populations. Ades distributions were fitted to the annual data of leatherjacket counts to provide common estimates of parameters r and r. These values were then held constant to provide yearly estimates of A, the third parameter. The relationship between A and the sample mean was established so that a frequency distribution could be generated for any estimated mean population density. The ability of these models to predict leatherjacket frequency distributions was validated by using weather data for 1985–1988 to predict the number of fields with populations in excess of thresholds of 0.5,0.75 and 1 times 105ha-1. It is concluded that the predictions were of sufficient accuracy to substitute for the annual leatherjacket survey.  相似文献

Leaf-litter decomposition is a major component of carbon and nutrient dynamics in tropical forest ecosystems, and moisture availability is widely considered to be a major influence on decomposition rates. Here, we report the results of a study of leaf-litter decomposition of five tree species in response to dry-season irrigation in a tropical forest regrowth stand in the Brazilian Amazon; three experiments differing in the timing of installation and duration allowed for an improved resolution of irrigation effects on decomposition. We hypothesized that decomposition rates would be faster under higher moisture availability in the wet season and during dry-season irrigation periods in the treatment plots, and that decomposition rates would be faster for species with higher quality leaves, independent of treatment. The rates of decomposition ( k ) were up to 2.4 times higher in irrigated plots than in control plots. The highest k values were shown by Annona paludosa (0.97 to 1.26/yr) while Ocotea guianensis (0.73 to 0.85/yr) had the lowest values; intermediate rates were found for Lacistema pubescens (0.91 to 1.02/yr) and Vismia guianensis (0.91 to 1.08/yr). These four tree species differed significantly in leaf-litter quality parameters (nitrogen, phosphorus, lignin, and cellulose concentrations, as well as lignin:nitrogen and carbon:nitrogen ratios), but differences in decomposition rates among tree species were not strictly correlated with leaf-litter quality. Overall, our results show that dry-season moisture deficits limit decomposition in Amazonian forest regrowth.  相似文献

This study demonstrates the debilitative effect of a coelomic gregarine, Diplocystis tipulae, on Tipula paludosa. The larvae were provided contaminated fresh grass leaves from a field where 40.0% of T. paludosa larvae were infected by this pathogen. Resultant infected larvae were separated into four groups according to infection level. Analysing their weights, lengths, and weight/length ratios showed that larval size decreased as infection level increased. Differences, especially at the lower and upper levels of the infection levels, were statistically significant. It was concluded that infection by D. tipulae affected the size of T. paludosa larvae resulting in smaller individuals.  相似文献

Larvae of Tipula paludosa (leatherjackets) are pests of grassland and cereals, and important prey items for a range of farmland birds. Their population dynamics from year to year have been the subject of study, but within‐generation dynamics have received much less attention. The duration and occurrence of instars and size of the population is important to both pest management and bird conservation. Leatherjackets were collected monthly from four grass fields over five generations (October to September). Count data were analysed for sources of variability and used to estimate the timing and duration of instars and population changes over a single generation. Instar durations were correlated with temperature. From the first to third instars, sample counts were strongly influenced by the location of the site and the generation. Fourth instar larvae showed a similar decline in numbers across all sites and generations. The duration and timing of first to third instars was more variable than that of the fourth instar, but there was limited evidence that this was influenced by temperature. Only the durations of the third and fourth instars were correlated. The population decline from April to September coincided with the onset of the fourth instar. Our results show that the factors influencing leatherjacket numbers change over the life cycle, but by the fourth instar, these are biotically driven. The predictability of its numerical decline indicates defined windows for crop damage and availability as prey. The stability of its timing suggests that day length may synchronize the annual cycle. Fixed timing of the fourth instar will have important consequences for the timing of crop damage and the conservation of farmland birds as climate changes.  相似文献

AIMS: To investigate antibiotic production by bacteria isolated from the hindgut of Tipula abdominalis, the aquatic crane fly. METHODS AND RESULTS: A group of five isolates with 99.1% 16S rRNA sequence similarity to Paenibacillus amylolyticus were identified as antibacterial producers using the cross-streak method against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. For one isolate, P. amylolyticus C27, biochemical tests were performed to confirm 16S rRNA identification and the antibacterials were purified using chromatographic methods. Postsource decay (PSD) mass spectroscopy (MS) was used to identify the antimicrobials, which were found to be polymyxins E(1) and E(2). Investigation of the remaining four isolates using PSD MS revealed they all produce polymyxins E(1) and E(2) as well. CONCLUSIONS, SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Although variants of the polymyxin antibiotics are known to be produced by several species within the Paenibacillus genus, this first investigation of antibacterial production by bacteria isolated from the hindgut of T. abdominalis describes a novel source for polymyxin E production as well as the first report of antibiotic production by P. amylolyticus.  相似文献

Up to 99% of the carbon fuelling the food webs of temperate woodland streams is derived from inputs of terrestrial leaf litter. Aquatic bacteria, fungi, and detritivore invertebrates directly utilize these inputs, transferring this energy to other components of the food web. Increases in atmospheric CO2 could indirectly impact woodland stream food webs by chemically altering leaf litter. This study evaluated CO2-induced chemical changes in aspen ( Populus tremuloides ) leaf litter, and the corresponding effects on stream bacteria, fungi and leaf-shredding cranefly larvae ( Tipula abdominalis : Diptera). Leaf litter from plants grown under elevated CO2 had decreased nutritional value to aquatic decomposers and detritivores because of higher levels of structural compounds and lower nitrogen content. Consequently, elevated CO2-grown leaf litter supported 59% lower bacterial production in a stream than litter grown at ambient CO2 levels, while not affecting fungal biomass. Larval craneflies fed elevated CO2-grown microbially colonized leaves consumed less, assimilated less, and grew 12 times slower than their ambient fed counterparts.  相似文献
