Heterais exul, previously known from Brazil and Argentina, was collected from a number of lakes and streams in the Lakes Region of Chile (between Valdivia and Puerto Montt). It was found in a wide variety of habitats: on leaf litter, detritus, algae, rotting wood, emergent vegetation, and clean sandy bottoms. Heterias, Pseudasellus, and Fritzianira are placed in synonymy, but Fritzianira is maintained as a subgenus of Heterias because of its lack of an antenna) scale. The 3 Australian species of Heterias and H. exul are believed to have evolved from a common freshwater Gondwanaland ancestor.  相似文献

The assumption that landscapes dominated by mature vegetation are presently in carbon steady state with the atmosphere is challenged. Evidence suggests that the vegetation and soils of these landscapes are frequently disturbed and over short time periods (<300 yr) slowly sequester atmospheric carbon. The critical consideration in this argument is the time interval used to evaluate a steady state. Current models of carbon flux through the terrestrial biota limit their time considerations to 120 yr, a short and inadequate time interval for realistic assumptions about steady state in the carbon cycle of vegetation.Research performed under subcontract 19B-07762C with S. Summary In Lithobius forficatus each of the coxae of the four posterior trunk segments bear a pore field with several coxal pores. The surrounding single-layered epithelium is composed of four different cell types: the main epithelial cells having a fine-structural organization of transport cells with deep apical and basal folds of the cell surfaces and plasmalemma-mitochondrial complexes, junctional cells, exocrine glands, and the wall cells of the pore channel. The entire epithelium is separated from the hemolymph by an inner cellular sheath. It is assumed that the coxal organs participate in fluid uptake.  相似文献

A radular mechanosensory neuron, RM, was identified in the buccal ganglia of Incilaria fruhstorferi. Fine neurites ramified bilaterally in the buccal ganglia, and main neurites entered the subradular epithelium via buccal nerve 3 (n3). When the radula was distorted by bending, RM produced an afferent spike which was preceded by an axonic spike recorded at n3. The response of RM to radular distortion was observed even in the absence of Ca2+, which drastically suppressed chemical synaptic interactions. Therefore, RM was concluded to be a primary radular mechanoreceptor.During rhythmic buccal motor activity induced by food or electrical stimulation of the cerebrobuccal connective, RM received excitatory input during the radular retraction phase. In the isolated buccal ganglia connected to the radula via n3s, the afferent spike, which had been evoked by electrical stimulation of the subradular epithelium, was broadened with the phasic excitatory input. Since the afferent spike was also broadened by current injection into the soma, depolarization due to the phasic input may have produced the spike broadening.Spike broadening was also observed during repetitive firing evoked by current injection. The amplitude of the excitatory postsynaptic potential in a follower neuron increased depending on the spike broadening of RM.Abbreviations CBC cerebrobuccal connective - EPSP excitatory postsynaptic potential - n1,n3 buccal nerves 1 and 3 - RBMA rhythmic buccal motor activity - RM radular mechanosensory neuron - SMT supramedian radular tensor neuron  相似文献

Dynamic Global Vegetation Models (DGVMs) provide a state-of-the-art process-based approach to study the complex interplay between vegetation and its physical environment. For example, they help to predict how terrestrial plants interact with climate, soils, disturbance and competition for resources. We argue that there is untapped potential for the use of DGVMs in ecological and ecophysiological research. One fundamental barrier to realize this potential is that many researchers with relevant expertize (ecology, plant physiology, soil science, etc.) lack access to the technical resources or awareness of the research potential of DGVMs. Here we present the Land Sites Platform (LSP): new software that facilitates single-site simulations with the Functionally Assembled Terrestrial Ecosystem Simulator, an advanced DGVM coupled with the Community Land Model. The LSP includes a Graphical User Interface and an Application Programming Interface, which improve the user experience and lower the technical thresholds for installing these model architectures and setting up model experiments. The software is distributed via version-controlled containers; researchers and students can run simulations directly on their personal computers or servers, with relatively low hardware requirements, and on different operating systems. Version 1.0 of the LSP supports site-level simulations. We provide input data for 20 established geo-ecological observation sites in Norway and workflows to add generic sites from public global datasets. The LSP makes standard model experiments with default data easily achievable (e.g., for educational or introductory purposes) while retaining flexibility for more advanced scientific uses. We further provide tools to visualize the model input and output, including simple examples to relate predictions to local observations. The LSP improves access to land surface and DGVM modelling as a building block of community cyberinfrastructure that may inspire new avenues for mechanistic ecosystem research across disciplines.  相似文献

Quantitative and qualitative analyses of filming studies reveal that fundamental differences exist between the gaits of the New Zealand fur seal (Arctocephalus forsteri) and the Hooker's sea lion (Phocarctos hookeri). Terrestrial locomotion of the latter species is similar to that of terrestrial vertebrates in which the limbs are moved in sequence, alternately and independently. In contrast, the gait of the New Zealand fur seal does not conform to this sequence, the hind limbs being moved in unison. The gaits of both species are defined and illustrated. The limbs of otariids are structurally adapted for a semi-aquatic lifestyle and consequently large oscillations of the centre of gravity are necessary to enable the limbs to be lifted and protracted during terrestrial locomotion. Phocarctos hookeri achieves this by transferring weight in the transverse plane while in A.forsteri it is in the sagittal plane. Hind limb movements are distinctly different; P. hookeri moves each hind limb individually by the combined action of limb protraction and rotation of the pelvis while A. forsteri moves its hind limbs together, predominantly by flexion of the posterior axial skeleton. While terrestrial locomotion in these species is achieved by fundamentally different gaits, post cranial elements of A. forsteri and P. hookeri are barely distinguishable; selection for the behavioural control of terrestrial locomotion has apparently preceded structural modifications. The gaits are considered to be ecological specializations which are adaptations to the mechanical problems imposed by different habitats. Gaits of these species appear typical or representative of members of their inferred subfamilies (Arctocephalinae and Otariinae). The gaits of A. forsteri and P. hookeri are however paradoxical in light of their inferred evolutionary history since the gait of the Hooker's sea lion resembles more closely that of the putative ancestors of otariids (arctoid fissiped carnivores) than does the gait of the supposedly more primitive New Zealand fur seal.  相似文献

The distribution pattern of ten species of Collembola was studied during the four years period from July 1971 to May 1975 in a pine forest soil. The distribution patterns were analysed for two scales of distribution, i. e., the distribution over the plot of 10×10 m2 and the micro-distribution within a block sample consisting of 36 contigious units each 2×2 cm2 in area, by applying the -m regression method. The fundamental pattern which appeared was quite similar for the species examined and individuals were aggregated in response to the heterogeneity of habitat conditions. The causes of aggregations were discussed with regard to some environmental factors. The relative abundances of 10 species within the collembolan community was examined in relation to the habitat utilization and the relative abundance was not related to the degree of aggregation but rather to the area occupied by individuals. This suggests that the more numerically abundant species tend to occupy broader micro-habitat. Biological meaning of aggregation was discussed in connection with the population biology and community organization of collembola.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Mycorrhizal specialization has been shown to limit recruitment capacity in orchids, but an increasing number of orchids are being documented as invasive or weed-like. The reasons for this proliferation were examined by investigating mycorrhizal fungi and edaphic correlates of Microtis media, an Australian terrestrial orchid that is an aggressive ecosystem and horticultural weed.

Methods

Molecular identification of fungi cultivated from M. media pelotons, symbiotic in vitro M. media seed germination assays, ex situ fungal baiting of M. media and co-occurring orchid taxa (Caladenia arenicola, Pterostylis sanguinea and Diuris magnifica) and soil physical and chemical analyses were undertaken.

Key Results

It was found that: (1) M. media associates with a broad taxonomic spectrum of mycobionts including Piriformospora indica, Sebacina vermifera, Tulasnella calospora and Ceratobasidium sp.; (2) germination efficacy of mycorrhizal isolates was greater for fungi isolated from plants in disturbed than in natural habitats; (3) a higher percentage of M. media seeds germinate than D. magnifica, P. sanguinea or C. arenicola seeds when incubated with soil from M. media roots; and (4) M. media–mycorrhizal fungal associations show an unusual breadth of habitat tolerance, especially for soil phosphorus (P) fertility.

Conclusions

The findings in M. media support the idea that invasive terrestrial orchids may associate with a diversity of fungi that are widespread and common, enhance seed germination in the host plant but not co-occurring orchid species and tolerate a range of habitats. These traits may provide the weedy orchid with a competitive advantage over co-occurring orchid species. If so, invasive orchids are likely to become more broadly distributed and increasingly colonize novel habitats.  相似文献

Stable hydrogen and carbon isotopic compositions of individual n-alkanes were determined for various terrestrial plants (33 samples including 27 species) and aquatic plants (six species) in natural environments from Japan and Thailand. In C3 plants, n-alkanes extracted from angiosperms have a deltaD value of -152+/-26 per thousand (relative to Standard Mean Ocean Water [SMOW]) and delta13C value of -36.1+/-2.7 per thousand (relative to Peedde Belemnite [PDB]), and those from gymnosperms have a deltaD value of -149+/-16 per thousand and delta13C value of -31.6+/-1.7 per thousand. Angiosperms have n-alkanes depleted in 13C relative to gymnosperms. n-Alkanes from C4 plants have a deltaD value of -171+/-12 per thousand and delta13C value of -20.5+/-2.1 per thousand, being a little depleted in D and much enriched in 13C compared to C3 plants. n-Alkanes of CAM plants are a little depleted in D and vary widely in delta13C relative to those of C3 and C4 plants. In aquatic plants, n-alkanes from freshwater plants have a deltaD value of -187+/-16 per thousand and delta13C value of -25.3+/-1.9 per thousand, and those from seaweeds have a deltaD value of -155+/-34 per thousand and delta13C value of -22.8+/-1.0 per thousand. All n-alkanes from various plant classes are more depleted in D and 13C relative to environmental water and bulk tissue, respectively. In addition, the hydrogen and carbon isotopic fractionations during n-alkane synthesis are distinctive for these various plant classes. While C3 plants have smaller isotopic fractionations in both D and 13C, seaweed has larger isotopic fractionations.  相似文献

The primate fossil record suggests that terrestriality was more common in the past than it is today, particularly among cercopithecoid primates. Whether or not a fossil primate habitually preferred terrestrial substrates has typically been inferred from its forelimb anatomy. Because extant large-bodied terrestrial cercopithecine monkeys utilize digitigrade hand postures during locomotion, being able to identify if a fossil primate habitually adopted digitigrade postures would be particularly revealing of terrestriality in this group. This paper examines the functional morphology of metacarpals in order to identify osteological correlates of digitigrade versus palmigrade hand postures. Linear measurements were obtained from 324 individuals belonging to digitigrade and palmigrade cercopithecoid species and comparisons were made between hand posture groups. Digitigrade taxa have shorter metacarpals, relative to both body mass and humerus length, than palmigrade taxa. Also, digitigrade taxa tend to have metacarpals with smaller dorsoventral diameters, relative to the product of body mass and metacarpal length, compared to palmigrade taxa. The size and shape of the metacarpal heads do not significantly differ between hand posture groups. Multivariate analyses suggest that metacarpal shape can only weakly discriminate between hand posture groups. In general, while there are some morphological differences in the metacarpals between hand posture groups, similarities also exist that are likely related to the fact that even digitigrade cercopithecoids can adopt palmigrade hand postures in different situations (e.g., terrestrial running, arboreal locomotion), and/or that the functional demands of different hand postures are not reflected in all aspects of metacarpal morphology. Therefore, the lack of identifiable adaptations for specific hand postures in extant cercopithecoids makes it difficult to determine a preference for specific habitats from fossil primate hand bones.  相似文献
