Many decisions involve a trade-off between commitment and flexibility. We show here that the collective decisions ants make over new nest sites are sometimes sufficiently flexible that the ants can change targets even after an emigration has begun. Our findings suggest that, in this context, the ants’ procedures are such that they can sometimes avoid ‘negative information cascades’ which might lock them into a poor choice. The ants are more responsive to belated good news of a higher quality nest than they are when the nest they had initially chosen degraded to become worse than an alternative. Our study confirms, in a new way, that ant colonies can be very powerful “search engines”.  相似文献

We show that ants can reconnoitre their surroundings and in effect plan for the future. Temnothorax albipennis colonies use a sophisticated strategy to select a new nest when the need arises. Initially, we presented colonies with a new nest of lower quality than their current one that they could explore for one week without a need to emigrate. We then introduced a second identical low quality new nest and destroyed their old nest so that they had to emigrate. Colonies showed a highly significant preference for the (low quality) novel new nest over the identical but familiar one. In otherwise identical experiments, colonies showed no such discrimination when the choice was between a familiar and an unfamiliar high-quality nest. When, however, either all possible pheromone marks were removed, or landmarks were re-orientated, just before the emigration, the ants chose between identical low-quality new nests at random. These results demonstrate for the first time that ants are capable of assessing and retaining information about the quality of potential new nest sites, probably by using both pheromones and landmark cues, even though this information may only be of strategic value to the colony in the future. They seem capable, therefore, of latent learning and, more explicitly, learning what not to do.  相似文献

The two sibling ant species Temnothorax nylanderi and Temnothorax crassispinus are widely distributed throughout deciduous forests in Europe. Their resemblance in morphology and similar ecological requirements suggest that they evolved from the same ancestral species in different glacial refugia and re-immigrated into Central Europe after the last ice age. Here, we show that the two species are parapatrically distributed in south-eastern Germany and hybridize along a narrow contact zone close to the continental divide. Phylogeographical data based on the mitochondrial genes cytochrome oxidase subunit I and cytochrome b suggest that the dominant haplotypes for T. nylanderi and T. crassispinus might have diverged already 1.5–2 Mya. 1. Most ants in boreal and alpine habitats are facultatively polygynous, i.e. their colonies may contain one or several queens. It was investigated how the proportion of polygynous colonies varies along an elevation gradient from 60 to 2700 m in the Nearctic ant Temnothorax rugatulus (Emery). 2. Across all populations, the proportion of polygynous colonies was positively correlated with altitude. The correlation was considerably stronger when only populations in the narrow area of the Chiricahua Mts, Arizona, were compared. 3. The dominance of polygynous colonies at high altitudes may be associated with selection against solitary colony founding by young queens. In areas with short summers and long winters, hibernation mortality of solitarily founding queens may select for alternative reproductive tactics, such as polygyny and colony founding by budding. 4. Colony founding tactics need to be taken into account to more fully understand altitudinal and latitudinal patterns of ant faunas.  相似文献

Behavioural lateralization in invertebrates is an important field of study because it may provide insights into the early origins of lateralization seen in a diversity of organisms. Here, we present evidence for a leftward turning bias in Temnothorax albipennis ants exploring nest cavities and in branching mazes, where the bias is initially obscured by thigmotaxis (wall-following) behaviour. Forward travel with a consistent turning bias in either direction is an effective nest exploration method, and a simple decision-making heuristic to employ when faced with multiple directional choices. Replication of the same bias at the colony level would also reduce individual predation risk through aggregation effects, and may lead to a faster attainment of a quorum threshold for nest migration. We suggest the turning bias may be the result of an evolutionary interplay between vision, exploration and migration factors, promoted by the ants'' eusociality.  相似文献

Summary. We analyzed the impact of ecological parameters, such as nest density and nest site availability, on colony organization and investment patterns in two populations of the ant Temnothorax crassispinus, a parapatric sibling species of the well-studied T. nylanderi (Temnothorax was until recently referred to as Leptothorax (Myrafant); Bolton, 1993). As in T. nylanderi, sex allocation ratios were strongly associated with total sexual reproduction, i. e., nests with large sexual investment produced mainly female sexuals. Furthermore, nest site quality affected sex allocation ratios, with colonies from ephemeral nest sites producing a more male-biased sex allocation ratio than colonies from sturdy nest sites. In contrast to T. nylanderi, workers in colonies of T. crassispinus were mostly fullsisters both in a dense and a sparsely populated area, suggesting that colony fusion and colony usurpation are rare in this species. In addition, the presence of a queen in a local nest unit strongly influenced sex ratio decisions, in that these nests raised a more male biased allocation ratio compared to queenless nests. This also suggests that colony structure is more stable in T. crassispinus than in T. nylanderi. We conclude that sibling species, though often very similar in their morphology and ecological requirements, may nevertheless react very differently to ecological variation.Received 11 December 2003; revised 4 March 2004; accepted 19 April 2004.  相似文献

In many ant species, multiple modes of founding new colonies occur in the same population. These modes include dependent founding, independent founding by haplometrosis (single queen), and independent founding by pleometrosis (multiple queens). In several cases, a dimorphism in queen size has been found, such that each morph specializes in a particular nest-founding behavior. I investigated queen size in the ant Temnothorax longispinosus in several southern Wisconsin populations and found three distinct queen morphs: small queens with very low fat content and short wings, large queens with low fat and long wings, and large queens with high fat and very long wings. Several traits associated with founding behavior correlated with these queen sizes. Small queens were produced in lower numbers, were more common in polygynous nests, and returned to the nest in higher proportions than both large queen morphs. The size ranges and fat levels of each queen morph were similar to those of other species that specialize in either haplometrosis (very large, high fat), pleometrosis (large, low fat), or dependent founding (small and low fat). However, there was extensive overlap in several of the founding behaviors, suggesting that the morphs in these populations have some flexibility in founding behavior. The queen morphs in these populations of T. longispinosus may resemble early stages in the evolution of more specialized dispersal polymorphisms found in other ant species.
