Summary The locus coeruleus of cat is populated by two types of neurons: medium sized ones, with plump cell bodies and relatively short dendrites; and small ones, with triangular bodies and relatively long dendrites. The former type is regarded here as typical of the centre, whereas the second type could simply represent displaced neurons from the adjacent griseum centrale. Electron microscopy failed to reveal any outstanding richness in pigment granules in kittens up to five weeks old. Very characteristic somatic appendages were found, mostly in the medium sized neurons. These somatic spines communicate with the perikaryon by means of a narrow neck region. A complex, multilayered, glial sheath surrounds the cells. This glial sheath is pierced by the somatic appendages, which are not surrounded by glia and make contact with axonal knobs. Typical dendritic spines appear to be absent. Axodendritic synapses are made on medium sized dendritic trunks. By and large, most of the synaptic vesicles present in the centre are of the small, clear-centered type. However, dense core vesicles extremely variegated in size and appearance were found, both in presynaptic and postsynaptic profiles. The possibility that dense core vesicles should be regarded as atypical lysosomes rich in by-products of the metabolism of catecholamines (melanine) has been considered.Supported by grant MA 4183 from the Medical Research Council of Canada.  相似文献

Summary Cells immunoreactive with an anti-LHRH serum were visualized in the brain of the three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, by means of the PAP technique. Positive cells were found in a periventricular position in the nucleus praeopticus pars magnocellularis, the nucleus dorsomedialis thalami, the nucleus ventromedialis thalami, the nucleus periventricularis posterior, and in the periventricular dorsomedian tegmentum. These cells were frequently observed to contact the CSF.  相似文献

The secreted frizzled-related proteins (Sfrp) are a family of soluble proteins with diverse biological functions having the capacity to bind Wnt ligands, to modulate Wnt signalling, and to signal directly via the Wnt receptor, Frizzled. In an enhancer trap screen for embryonic expression in zebrafish we identified an sfrp1 gene. Previous studies suggest an important role for sfrp1 in eye development, however, no data have been reported using the zebrafish model. In this paper, we describe duplicate sfrp1 genes in zebrafish and present a detailed analysis of the expression profile of both genes. Whole mount in situ hybridisation analyses of sfrp1a during embryonic and larval development revealed a dynamic expression profile, including: the central nervous system, where sfrp1a was regionally expressed throughout the brain and developing eye; the posterior gut, from the time of endodermal cell condensation; the lateral line, where sfrp1a was expressed in the migrating primordia and interneuromast cells that give rise to the sensory organs. Other sites included the blastoderm, segmenting mesoderm, olfactory placode, developing ear, pronephros and fin-bud. We have also analysed sfrp1b expression during embryonic development. Surprisingly this gene exhibited a divergent expression profile being limited to the yolk syncytium under the elongating tail-bud, which later covered the distal yolk extension, and transiently in the tail-bud mesenchyme. Overall, our studies provide a basis for future analyses of these developmentally important factors using the zebrafish model.  相似文献

Summary A system of somatostatin-immunoreactive neurons was demonstrated in the brains of the eel, Anguilla anguilla, the European minnow, Phoxinus phoxinus, and the rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, by means of the light-microscopic indirect immunoperoxidase technique. In the anterior periventricular nucleus, somatostatin-immunoreactive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-contacting neurons display intensely stained intraventricular dendritic protrusions, perikarya, and axonal processes. The latter taper into a somatostatin-immunoreactive fiber plexus extending to the infundibulum, the proximal neurohypophysis, and the lateral and mammillary recesses. In addition, somatostatin-immunoreactive neurons were demonstrated in the magnocellular preoptic, entopeduncular and dorsolateral thalamic nuclei, further in the pretectal area and the ventrolateral tegmentum. Somatostatin-immunoreactive fiber bundles project via the stria medullaris toward the habenular nucleus; they also course in the dorsomedial-ventrolateral direction at the level of the pretectal-tegmental area, and within the ventral and dorsal tegmentum. The presence of somatostatin in a variety of different neurons of the teleost brain is discussed in connection with their tentative inhibitory function. The CSF-contacting neurons of the anterior periventricular nucleus are supposed to function as sensors that pass information from the CSF to the somatostatin system of the hypothalamus and/or other components of the neuroendocrine apparatus.Dedicated to Professor Helmut Leonhardt, Kiel, on the occasion of his 65th birthdayThis investigation was supported by grants from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft to A.O. Summary Immunocytochemistry using antibodies against Met-enkephalin and Leu-enkephalin has demonstrated a group of large enkephalin-immunoreactive neurons in the nucleus of the rostral mesencephalic tegmentum (mRMT) of two teleost fish, Salmo gairdneri and Salmo salar. Injections of cobalt-lysine in the medial optic tectum retrogradely labeled the above group of tegmental neurons. Tegmental neurons were labeled only ipsilaterally to the injection site. This indicates that enkephalinergic neurons in the nRMT project to the optic tectum, and that at least some of the enkephalinergic axons observed in the optic tectum belong to a tegmento-tectal pathway. Comparable enkephalinergic pathways have been described in reptiles and birds, where pretectal-mesencephalic nuclei contribute to the enkephalin-containing fibers that project to the optic tectum.  相似文献

An unknown chicken gene selected from a published substractive hybridization screen (GenBank Accession No. ; [Christiansen, J.H., Coles, E.G., Robinson, V., Pasini, A., Wilkinson, D.G., 2001. Screening from a subtracted embryonic chick hindbrain cDNA library: identification of genes expressed during hindbrain, midbrain and cranial neural crest development. Mech. Dev. 102, 119-133.]) was deemed of interest because of its dynamic pattern of expression across the forebrain and midbrain regions. A 528bp fragment cloned from early chick embryo cDNA and used for in situ hybridization corresponded to part of the 3' untranslated region of the chicken gene Leucine-rich repeat neuronal protein 1 (Lrrn1). The expression of this gene, mapped in the embryonic chick brain between stages HH10 and HH26, apparently preconfigures the zona limitans thalami site before overt formation of this boundary structure. Apart of colateral expression in the forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain basal plate, the most significant expression of Lrrn1 was found early on across the entire alar plate of midbrain and forebrain (HH10). This unitary domain soon divides at HH14 into a rostral part, across alar secondary prosencephalon and prospective alar prosomere 3 (prethalamus; caudal limit at the prospective zona limitans), and a caudal part in alar prosomere 1 (pretectum) and midbrain. The rostral forebrain domain later downregulates gradually most extratelencephalic signal of Lrrn1, but the rostral shell of zona limitans retains expression longer. Expression in the caudal alar domain also changes by downregulation within its pretectal subdomain. Caudally, the midbrain domain ends at the isthmo-mesencephalic junction throughout the studied period. Embryonic Lrrn1 signal also appears in the somites and in the otic vesicle.  相似文献
