The analysis of morphological variation of tali and calcanei articular surfaces from “S'Illot des Porros” (Majorca, 2430±200 BP) has been made. It indicates the high frequency of extensions of the talocrural and subtalar surfaces, which are shown to be produced not only by a high level of stress on the bones. The presence of the sulcus tali facet in most cases could indicate, however, a greater degree of lateral movement of the foot.  相似文献

The yellow-fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, infects a growing number of people every year with dengue, yellow fever and chikungunya viruses. Contact chemoreception in mosquitoes influences a number of behaviors including host-selection, oviposition and feeding. While these behaviors are in many instances well documented, the molecular mechanisms mediating them are not well understood. Here we report the results of sequencing total messenger RNA in the labella and tarsi of both male and female Ae. aegypti to reveal Gustatory Receptor (GR) gene expression profiles in these major gustatory appendages. Gene expression levels in each tissue were verified by RT-qPCR. We discuss potential functions for the GRs revealed here by considering homologous GRs in other insects. Specific GRs provide molecular targets for modification of gustatory-mediated behaviors in this important disease vector.  相似文献

Although the forelegs of honeybees are one of their main gustatory appendages, tarsal gustation in bees has never been systematically studied. To provide a more extensive account on honeybee tarsal gustation, we performed a series of behavioral experiments aimed at characterizing (1) tarsal sucrose sensitivity under different experimental conditions and (2) the capacity of tarsal sucrose stimulation to support olfactory conditioning. We quantified the proboscis extension reflex to tarsal sucrose stimulation and to odors paired with tarsal sucrose stimulation, respectively. Our experiments show that tarsal sucrose sensitivity is lower than antennal sucrose sensitivity and can be increased by starvation time. In contrast, antennae amputation decreases tarsal sucrose sensitivity. Furthermore, we show that tarsal sucrose stimulation can support olfactory learning and memory even if the acquisition level reached is relatively low (40%).  相似文献

Summary The tarsus of S. gregaria is divided into three units (here called segments) and an arolium set between a pair of claws. The first segment bears three pairs of pulvilli in the fore and middle legs, and one pair and two single pulvilli in the hind legs. Segment two bears a pair of pulvilli, segment three one long pulvillus and the arolium a similar pad on the undersurface. The outer layers of the arolium pad differ from those of the pulvilli in possibly lacking an epicuticle and in having a layer of cuticle which, unlike the corresponding layer in the pulvilli, does not stain with protein stains. The claws and dorsal surfaces bear trichoid sensilla, basiconic sensilla and campaniform sensilla. Smaller basiconic sensilla and canal sensilla occur on the proximal part of the pulvilli, and basiconic sensilla on the arolium undersurface. Internally the cuticle is modified in the arolium and pulvilli so that rods of probably chitin and resilin are formed. This would impart flexibility to the undersurfaces whilst retaining some degree of rigidity which might prevent damage to the small and delicate sense organs on the pulvilli. The tip of the arolium is specialised for adhesion, and there are two large neurones internally which could conceivably monitor attachment or detachment of the tip. There are chordotonal organs in segment three, and several other large neurones throughout the tarsus, some of which are associated with the slings of tissue holding the apodeme in a ventral position. Gland cells occurring in the dorsal epidermis of the adult mature male are also briefly described.  相似文献
